JOHN A. HALLOWAY, QF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MUSIQAL WIND INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1908.
Application filed March 23, 1908. Serial'No. 422,800.
To all w/pom it may concern: Be it knownthatLJOHN-A. IIALLOW-AY, a
citizenof the'United" States, residing in the borouglrof Manhattan, of the city of New York, in the Stata of New York, have invented certain new and. useful Improve mentsin Musical VVlllLl Instruments, of
which the following is a SPGClfiCiLt-IOII, refer-f ence being had to the accompanying draw? ings, forming a part hereof. I
This invention relates to improvements in wind instruments havinga sliding member, same as the trombone; the object being, 1st, to lengthen the service of said instrument; 2nd, to lessen the amount of 'oiling" necessary to obtain tlie proper working of, the'sliding part or slide as it lis generally called; 3rd, to
insure cleanliness of the instrument by venting the 011 used 111 the luhr1cat1on oi the parts from being scraped off from the central member and being'tra'nsferred to the outside of the slide where, owing to the construction that has been hitherto employed, the'oil or lubricant has made this instrument very objectionable, as the hands of the. player soon become soiled from the grease or oil which has been deplosited on the outside of slide,
and the clot ing, and particularly the shirt front soon becomes spattered by the'operation of the slide.
In accordance with-the present invention, means are provided so that no grease or lubricant passes to the outside of the moving slide, and in consequence the instrument is rendered as clean as any other instrument of an orchestra.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a trombone embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is. a view on a largerscale of,
the portion of the instrument in which the invention applies,-the same showing only one leg of the mechanism, the portion of the slid'e being in section; Fig. 3 is also a view one larger scale of the portion in which the in;
vention applies, both legsfbeing shoyvn in their relation to the mouth-piece, while a portion of one of the legs is shown in section illustrating one modified form of the diverging end of the bearing member. Similar letters refer to similar parts .throu hout the several views. Em odiment of my invention is showh-in mydrawings, it being understood that various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
A designates what is called the'slide, which is composed of two legs, each of which is designatedc. Joining these two legs 0 is ,the
of thelegs c, e designates the cup-shaped collars which form a part of the stationary pieces d, which act as plungers working inside of the two legs 0. its innermost position the ends f telescope insidebf the cups 6, as shown by dotted position 0. V
B designates the stationary part of the instrument having one leg I) and'another leg at, which terminates in the bell end Z, and the )ortion it carries the mouth-piece m; There ei'og sliding frictlon between the parts (1' which work inside of c, it is necessary to lubricate'the bearing between the two.
Instead of leaving the end of the legs 0 square and sharp so as to scrape over the surface of d, as hitherto p racticed, I make the ends with flaring interiors which will act as receptacles or gatherers' for the oil or lubricant, which would otherwise be scra ed oil from the surface of d and not only be lost for the player.
. TWith my invention, the lubricant is redeposited on the tube at as it is withdrawn. The
rounded surface at the ends will give a .for the purpose described.
I have signed my In testimony whereof name to this-specification in the presenceof two subscribing witnesses March '21, 1908.
