boken, in the county of Hudson and State of I New Jersey, and HENRYP. KRAFT, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, both citizens of the United States, have jointly invented certain new and useful improvements in Closures for Jars or the Like, of which the following is a'specifica'tion.
Tins invention relates to closures for jars or the like, and aims to provide certain improvements therein.
The -invention is particularly directed to a sheet-metal stopper or cap for jars in: the like, whicln while being of extremely strong and durable construction, will p'ern'iit the utmost economy of manufacture.
In the drawings, wherein we have illustratcd several embodiments of our invention,-l "igure l is a central vertical section of a stopper constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a.-viewof theparts detached before the assembling operation. Fig. 3 is a bottom View of the stopper. Fig. lillustrates a central vertical section of another formof our invention.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings, wherein we have shown our invention as applied to a stopper, let A indicate' the stopper 'as a whole, which preferably constructed with a body portion a, and a top plate I) fixed thereto in any suitable manner, as by having its edge bent over a flange -formed on the top of the body portion as shown. ,The.
body a is adapted to screw in a socket B having a seat C formed at its bottom. The stopper A is provided with a packing disk or washer D designed to be pressed against the seat as the stopper is screwed home.
Our invention is best applied to construetions wherein the stopper and socket are formed of sheet-metal. Diificulty has heretofore been'met with in providing proper means for supporting the washer upon the stopper. It is very desirable that the washer should be applied to the stopper instead of to the socket member, so that the washer may be removed with the stopper and easily inspected or replaced. It is necessary to provide a-very secure means for attaching the washer to the stopper, since the washer tends to adhere firmly to the socket member when the stopper is unscrewed. It is also'very desirable that the stopper should be ilnperforate sothat noleakage of air or liquid is possible throughit,
According to our invention We provide a very strong and extended support for the washer on its underside, and attain certain other advantages which wlll'be hereinafter referred to.
In the process'of constructing a stopper according to the preferred form of our invention, we first shape the body portion into the form shown in Fig. 2, in which form it is provided on its inner side with a-circular projecting portion F which is adapted to lie within the central recess in the washer D and an annular bearing face J surrounding the portion F. An annular plate G having an angular flange Id at its inner edge is then applied to the body E so that such flange surrounds the portion F. WVhen in this position the bottom wall I of the projection F is forced in by a proper tool which has the effect of laterally spreading the walls of the projection so that they firmly engage the flange -H of the plate G. The top'plate 7) is then applied to'the body a and its edge bent. over the flange of the latter. The Washer D is then sprung intoplace.
This process permits the use ofa mandrel f or die Within the body a to support the latter in spreading or upsetting the walls of the projecting portion F. By constructing the stopper in this manner the entire stopper may be nickel-plated or otherwise finished before the application of the Washer.
However, the latter maybe applied before the application of the plate G. If desired the washer may be formed with a bead .which is held in a recess (1 formed on the inner side of the plate G, thus providing a still more secure engagement ofthe parts.
When the stopper is completed the washer is held securely against lateral movement by the part F, and is clamped between the face J of the body E, and the upper face of plate edge of the washer as is feasible without overlapping the necessary seating face of when the stopper isscrewed home is hence avoided.
In Fig. 4 we have illustrated. our inven tionas applied'to a cap adapted to screw vover- "the part B which corresponds to the socket member in Fig. 1. In this case the cap which is indicated at A carries the washer D its inner side which in this case is near its upper end, such washer being arranged on the interior shown. Otherwise the construction does not differ materially from that already described.
It will be understood that while we have illustrated, several embodiments of our invention, we do not wish to be limited to the details of construction shown. For instance, the use of the plate Gr, while very desirable, is not strictly essential, and it is also within the invention. to attach the plate G to the portion F by other means than up: setting the latter. Other variations of a like nature may be also employed. It will also be understood that our invention is applicable to other devices than jar closures,
such, for instance, as water-bottle stoppers, syringe nozzles, ice-bag stoppers, can closures, etc, all of which, and others of a like nature, are intended to be covered by the word stopper. as used herein.
What we claim is e l. A stopper having a sheet metal inner side bent to form an integral hollow proj ccting portion of materially smaller diameter than the body of the stopper, a packing washer surrounding such projecting portion, and having a seating face on its under side, and means for holding said washer in place, such means being fixed against axial movement and engaging a part of the under surface of said washer, and being free from engagement with said seating face.
2. A stopper having an exteriorly screw threaded body portion, and a bottom at the lower end thereof, such bottom being formed of the cap as with an integral hollow projecting portion of materially smaller diameter than the body of the stopper, and around such portion with an annular flat wall adapted to form a bearing face for a washer, apacking washer surrounding such projecting portion and bearing against said face, said washer having a seating face on its under side, and means for holding said washer in place.
3. The combination with a vessel having a seat of a stopper therefor, said stopper havinga sheet metal inner side formed with an integral hollow sheet metal projection, and an annular packing washer, surrounding such projection and having a seating face on its under side above said seat, and a portion radially inward of said face, and means for holding said washerin place, said means extending beneath said washer inwardly of said seating face.
4. A stopper formed with a portion, a washer surrounding sue portion, such portion being formed with a part extendin laterally outward, and a nlate engaged by such'part and extending over said washer.
5. A stopper formed with a pxrojecting portion, a washer surrounding suc portion, such portion being formed with a part extending laterally outward, an'da plate engaged by such part and extending over said washer, said plate having a flange fitting between the two.
6. A stopper having a plate on its inner side, said stopper being provided with. means for securing said plate on the inner side of the stopper body, and a washer between such plate and side, and surrounding said means.
7. A stopper having a plate secured to the bottom thereof, said plate having an angu la'r flange, and an annular Washer between such plate and bottom and surrounding said flange.
rojecting In witness whereof, we have hereunto signed our names in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
