SWITCH-POINT THROWER.

To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, RECHICHI PASQUALE, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Oil City, in the county of Venango and State bf Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch- Point Throwers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying, drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in switch-point throwers for street railways, the construction and operation of which are herein fully set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof and in which:

Fig. 3 is a vertical section at or about line 3?) of Fig. 2. Fig. t is an elevation of the inside of the cover. Fig. 5 is a plan View in sections at line 5 5 of Fig. 3. Figs. 6, 7, and S are details. Fig. 9 shows my device in position between the rails of a railway and the manner of connecting same to a switchpoint. Fig. is an elevation of a portion of the end of a car, showing the medium which operates my device.
The construction of my device is substantially as follows: Upon a circular case 1 is revolubly mounted a cover 2, which has upon its inner, lower side a cam-cylinder 3, upon the lower portion of the inner wall of which is formed a double, annular, horizontal cam-flange, 4, 4, adapted to impinge upon the cam-lug 5 of the thrust bar 6, which bar is movable longitudinally within the case 1. The projecting end of the said bar is adapted to be attached to a switchpoint in any suitable manner, for the purpose of throwing same. To the rear end of bar 6 is attached a yoke 7 at each end of which is formed a hook to each of which is attached a spiral spring 8, 8: The other end of each of said springs is attached to the respective hooks 9, 9: Said springs serve to hold rod 6 normally at one limit of its longitudinal movement, that is, in the position shown in Fig. 2, or when rod 6 is at its farthest outward limit.
Upon the upper surface of cover 2, is formed four upwardly-projecting, radial ribs, 10, 10, 10, 10, which are designed to be engaged by a suitable operating medium carried by, or affixed to a car, for the purpose of revolving said cover. The lower face of cam-cylinder 3 is also a cam, adapted to impinge upon the upper end of the lock-stem 11, for the purpose of lowering the same to release lock 12 from engagement with bar 6. At the center of the inside of cover 2 is formed a stub-shaft 13, which is received by a socket 14, in which it has a close bearing so that no sidewise motion is permitted, but in which it revolves freely.
A horizontal annular iange 15 extends into the case 1, and in the top face of same is formed a ball-case 16, in which a number of suitable balls are placed to form a thrust bearing for cover 2. Oover 2 is secured to case 1 in the following manner: At the periphery, Vthe cover is formed into a downwardly-projecting vertical rim or flange 17 which receives the upper portion of said case 1. In the periphery of said case, a
short distance below the upper edge, is
formed a continuous groove 18 into which project the inner end of several screws 19, that pass through the rim 17 of the cover;
this construction permits the cover to revolve freely. The outer end of bar (S is formed into a screw-thread upon which is screwed one end of a closely-wound spiral spring 20, and in the other end. of said spring is screwed any convenient device by means of which bar 6 may be connected to a switch-point, as shown in Fig. 9. The object of spring 20 is to provide a desired flexibility in the connecting medium between bar 6 and the switch-point, thus obviating fine adjustments of connection which would otherwise be necessary.
VVhen'my device is in readiness to operate, the same occupies a position approximate to a switch point and intermediate the rails of a track, with the thrust bar extended at a right angle to and connected with a switch point 26. Oase 1 may be secured in position in any suitable manner, but is preferably embedded in cement 21, as shown in Fig. 9.
The operation of my device is substantially as follows: Upon the under side of one or both ends of a car which is to operate a switch, is placed a horizontal wheel 22, adapted to impinge upon a flange 10 of cover 2 and thus cause said cover to revolve one-quarter of a revolution, which will throw point 26 to the opposite side of the switch. It will be readily seen that, as the cam-flange 4 impinges upon the opposing face of the cam-lug 5 of the thrust-bar 6, said bar will be caused to move inward to the position shown in Fig. 5 and in dotted lines in Fig. T, at which juncture lock 'l2 will be raised by spring 24 into engagement with notch 25, the lower face of cam-cylinder B being high at this point to permit said upward movement of the lock-stem ll. As cani-cylinder 3 is again caused to revolve a quarter of a revolution, the lower face of said cylinder impinges upon the upper end of stem ll and forces it downward, thus disengaging lock l2 from bar G, and the contraction of springs 8 to their normal condition causes said bar to move outward to the position shown in F 2 and 3.
As will be readily seen from the drawings and understood from the above description, one-quarter of a revolution of the cover throws the switch-point in either direction, so that if an operating medium 22 is placed upon each end of a car, the switch will be operated for said car and also left in the position in which it stood when approached by said car, therefore, only cars which are to be switched require to be equipped with switch operating devices.
In order to prevent too free a movement of cover 2, especially when it is in the position shown in Fig. 5, I place a detent dog 2T in the wall of case l and by means of a spring 2S, cause the inner end of said dog io bear against the periphery of cam-cylinder 3, and if found necessary said periphery may be suitably grooved or corrugated at certain intervals .tor the purpose of increasingl the effectiveness of dog 27.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a switch -point thrower, a case adapted to occupy a position intermediate the rails of a railway approximate to a switch point, a longitudinally-movable bar mounted in said case, flexible means connecting said bar directly to said switchpoint, means for keeping said bar normally at one position of said longitudinal movement, a revoluble cam mounted in said case and adapted to move said bar to the other position of said longitudinal movement, said cam being adapted to be actuated by a car,
in combination with means upon said car for actuatin@` said cam.
2. In a switch-point thrower, a case adapted to occupy a position intermediate to the rails of a railway approximate to a switch, a longitudinally movable bar mounted in said case, means for holding said bar at one limit of said longitudinal movement, a revoluble cam in said case adapted to move said bar to the other limit of said movement, means for locking said bar at said last mentioned limit, means upon said cam for releasing said lock, means connecting said bar to the point of said switch, in combination with means upon one end of a car for revolving said cam one-quarter of a revolution.
3. ln a switchpoint thrower, a case adapted to occupy a position intermediate the rails of a railway, and approximate to a switch, alongitudinally-movable bar mounted in said case, flexible means for holding said bar at one limit of said longitudinal movement, a revoluble cam in said. case adapted to move said bar to the other limit of said movement, means for locking said bar at said last-mentioned limit, means upon said cam for releasing said lock, means connecting said bar to the switch-point in said switch, in combination with means upon the front end of a car to revolve said car onequarter of a revolution and means upon the rear end of said car to revolve lsaid cam another quarter of a revolution for the purpose set forth.
il. In a switch-point thrower, a longitudinally-movable bar occupying a position intermediate the rails of av track approximate to a switch and attached by one of its ends directly to the switch-point, flexible means for holding said bar at one limit of said longitudinal movement, a revoluble cam adapted to move said bar to the other limit of said movement, a suitable bearing for said bar and for said cam, in combination with means upon a car for revolving said cam.
