Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1908.
Application filed October 2, 1907. Serial No. 395,621.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRIK MEINIOH BAoHE, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Stavanger, Norway, have invented new and useful Improvements in Joints for Sheet-Metal Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved joint for sheet metal cans which insures a tight closure and permits the can head to be removed Without cutting the metal.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a section through part of a can body andlid embodying my invention, showing the parts before being connected; Fig. 2 a similar section through the tongue, showing the joint closed; Fig. 3 a section similar to Fig. 2, taken through a plane outside the tongue; Fig. 4 a plan of an oblong can embodying my invention, and Fig. 5 a similar view of a round can.
The upper part a, of the can body (1,, is first bent outwards and downwards to form a flange section (1 and then outwards and upwards to form a flange section if, which thus surrounds section a. The sections a, and a constitute jointly an upwardly extending double flange provided with a surrounding upwardly opening groove or recess. The lid b, is first bent upwards as at b, then outwards and downwards as at W, and finally outwards and upwards as at b In this way there is formed between the parts I), and N, of the lid, a downwardly opening groove adapted to receive the double flange a, o of, can a. This lid-groove is surrounded by a downwardly extending double lid-flange b b adapted to be received within the bodygroove formed between parts a and a After the lid has been properly seated upon the can, the folds or flanges of the joint are compressed in suitable manner, so that the lid is firmly locked to the can body by frictional contact.
From flange b of lid 1), extends a tongue 0, a pull on which will disconnect the lid by withdrawing the double flange b 6 out of the groove formed between flanges a a In this way the can may be'opened without forming any ragged edges. A weakened circumferential line g, formed on lid 1), permits the lid to be opened by a suitable cutting tool, in case the joint should be com ressed too tightly, or the tongue is broken off. It is obvious that the invention may be applied to the bottom, as well as to the lid of the can.
I claim:
A can body bent outwards and downwards, and then outwards and upwards to form an upwardly extending doubled flange and a surrounding upwardly opening groove, combined with a lid bent upwards, outwards and downwards, and then outwards and upwards to form a downwardly opening groove adapted to receive the double body-flange, and a surrounding downwardly extending doubled flange adapted to be received by the body-groove, substantially as specified.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRIK MEINICH BACHE.
