Ipoctltaation o! Letten Patent.
Patented lupi. 22, 1908.
Application alud Februar] 6. 1907. Borla! No. 856.030.
To all Iwhom it may concern.:
lie it known that l, Enwaao lrzson', a eitizen of the United States, residing at West Springtielil, in the eounty ol' llnmpden and State of Massaehusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Sanding A iparatus for Fluid Pressure Brakes, of w uch the following` is a speeiiieation.
'Ihis invention relates to automatic sanding apparatus for fluid )ressure brakes, and has for its objeet to provide an improved eonst'ruetion whereby the. sanding deviee will be, automatieally operated to apply sand to the rails whenever air is admit-ted to the brake eyliuder for applying the brakes.
'lhis invention is espeeially adapted to be employed in eolmeetion with that. type of lluitl pressure brake a paratus havin r means for eouipmisatiug for rake eylinder leakage. whereb the brake. cylinder pressure is substantia ly maintained even when a small amount of air is being drawn from the same, and according to the preferred form Ymy improvement comprises a connection from the brake cylinder or the brake eylinder supply ort or passage to the blower of the air sam in' device whereby air will be alltomatioa ly supplied to the sand blower or ejector each time the brake is applied.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view showing my improvement applied to one form of lluid pressure brake apparatus which may be ein loved on locomotives or other vehicles; and l` i .2 is a similar view of a portion of a ear bralie apparatus embodyin a. slightly modified form of my improveme t.
Aa shown in Fig. l, I have illustrated my improvement in eonneetion with that t peof fluid pressure brake apparatus w ierein fluid, sueh as air under pressure, is admitted into a small chamber 3,\whieh may be termed the applieation ehamber, when it aets upon an abutment or piston 4 to operate a valve 5 for eontrolling the supply of air from any suitable souree, sueh as pipe 6 and reservon' 7, through port 8 and pipe .t to the brake cylinder, or brake cylim ers, lt). 'lho oppo' site side of the piston 4 being exposed to the brake cylinder pressure, it. is obvious that the same will aetuate the valve 5 to supply substantially the same degree of pressure to the V.ally operated valve. lb.`
brake e \'linder as is admitted to the application eluuuber nml then elose thesupply port H.
Any suitable or preferred means may he employed for eontrollin v the suppl)` and release of air to and from the applieatlon ehamber through a passage. or pipe. I3.
Ii desired, an exhaust valve tlmav alsobe operated by the piston for eontrollilry exhaust ports l2, so that when the air 1s released from the applieation ehamber the brake eylinder pressure aeting on the opposite side ol' the piston will move the same and valve l l to o ien said ports l2 aml release the air from the lirake ey'linder.
When the brake is applied with any degree ol' air pressure in the brake eyliuder, lt will be apparent that il the brake eylinder pressure should be redueetl below this amount b v leakage. or otherwise, the piston will then be netuated by the preponderating pressure ol 'the appliention eliamberto move the valve 5 to open the suppl)r port and admit a sollieient amount of an' to eompensate for sueh leakage. and to maintain the brake eylinder substantially eonstant.
Aeeording to my im irovemont, l provide n. eonneetion, sueh as pipo llt, from the brake eylinder or brake evlinder pipe 9 to the air supply pipe l5 leadin r to the blower of tho sanding deviee, .rhere yeaeh time air is ailmitted to the brake cylinder for applying the brakes, it is also su )plied through pi ie l5 to the sami blower and applies sand to t ie. rails.
In order to furnish air to the sand blower pipe to operate the sanding deviee at other times than when an applieation of the. brakes` is made, an additional pipe eonneetion l? may be provided lending to a source of air pressure, as reservoir?, and eontaining a manueherk valve lti preferably plaeed in the pipe eonneetion l-'i to nevont ilow of nil to the bl'nlto eylilxdul' ani exhaust port-when the air is being sup plied to said blower by means of the hand valve 18.
In Fig. l have illustrated my improvemont in eonneetion with another form of brake Cylinder maintaining deviee eomprising a Chamber It), to whieh air at the desired brake eylinderpressure is admitted at the same time that it is applied to the brake o vlinder through eonneetion 0 from any desired souree er aarhanism. 'lhe diaphragm '.21 tlien boing subject to tho opposing pri-ssurcs of the chnmbcr and thc brake cylindcr aparatos tho valvo .2 to supply any additional air undor prcssuro to thc brako c vlmdcr to compcnsato for ioakagc or air drawn to oporatc tho sanding dovico through pipcs I4 and l5.
It will now bo a pari-.nt that wlicro my iniprovcmont is usctl in conncction with a fluid prossuro brake apparatus having moans for maintaining tho brako cvlindcr prcssurc against loakagc, tlic small amount of air takcn from thc brakc c vlindcr rt'or opcratiiig tlic sand blowcr will bc rcadily compcnsatcd for and thcI brakc. i'yliiidor prcssuro will not boiiiatcriallv rcducod wliilcl thc sand is boing automatically applicd to the rails.
WliilcY in f improvement is particularly adaptcd to lio oni layed with fluid prcssura brako apparatus ol' this typo, it is not limitcd thereto, Init may also bc uscd with any standard or preferred form of air brake equipment.
llaving now dcscribad my invcntion, what I claiin as now and dcsiro to scciirc by Lettci's Patent, iszl. ',lhcI combination with a fluid prcssuro brake apparatus having a brakc c vlindcr, ot' a sanding dcvicc oporatcd b v thc fluid supplied to thc brake cylinder.
2. 'lhc combination with a fluid prcsiurc brako apparatus having a brako cylindcr, of a sanding dovico, and a. pi iai-.obnoction vlroni tho brake cylinder to sait sanding dovicc.
3. Tho combination with a fluid prcssuro brake apparatus havin v a brako cylinder, ot' a sanding dnvico, an moans whcraby air -froin the brako cylinder issuppliod to said sandin dovicc.
4. T ia combination with a fluid 'pressure brake apparatus having a brake cylindor, of
a sand blower devicc, and a pipo for catala lisliing communication from t dor to thc sand blowor pipo.
5. 'llia combination with a fluid prcssuro brakc apparatus having a brakocylindor and moans for `maintaining thc. bralco cylinder prcssuro, of a sanding device, and moans for supplying air from tlio lirako cylindcr tn said sanding dcvicc.
tt. 'Iho combination with a lhiid pi'casura hrakc apparatus` having a brako cvlindor and moans for maintaining tlic bral cy cvlindcr prcssura, oia sanding dcvico opcratcd by air supplicd to thc biako c vlindcr.
7. 'llio combination with a fluid prossuro brake apparatus having a braka cylinder and means for maintaining the brake cylinder prcssurc, of a sand blower pipc, and a pipo coiincctioii from thc brakc c vlindor to said sand blowor pipc.
H. 'lho combination with a fluid prcssuro brake apparatus having abrako cylinder, of a sanding device, mcans for establishing coniiuunication from tho brake cylindor to tho sanding dcvicc, amanually opoi'atcd valvo for also supplying fluid to said sanding dcvicc, and a chock valvc for provcnting back flow to tlio brako cvliudcr.
t). 'l`hc combination with a fluid prcssuro brakc apparatus having a brakcl cylmdcr, of a sand iowcr pipo, a pipo conncction from tlio brake cylinder to said sand blowor pipo, a clicck valvo for said )ipc connection, and a manually opcratcd volvo for also controlling tiza supplv of fluid to thoI sand blowor pipo.
In testimony whoi-cof I havo hm'onnto set my hand. EDWARD G. DESOE "itiicsscsz R. F. Emmi', E. A. Wiuoii'r.
