Keyed or otherwise secured to the outer ends of the necks35 and 36 are turning gears 37 and 38 and these gears are in mesh with gears 39 and 40 which are on the ends of the vertical shaft 41 which is mounted in the bearings 42, 43. Also mounted on the shaft 41 are oppositely facing lturning jaws 44 and 45 having inclined faces 46 and 47 and these jaws by contact with the lug 48 on the sleeve or coupling 26 on the bell rod 24, are rotated asthe coupling 26 and rod 24 are raised and lowered in operating the bell and through the gears 37 39 and 38, 40 rotate the turning jaws 31 and 32. The bearings-29, 30 and 42, 43 are secured together by uprights 49 and vertical guides are provided on these upthe lugs 48, 48a prevent turning of these lugs, when the sleeve 26 is rotated. f
In the operation of my im roved apparatus, .the stock is hoisted in t e skip cars 9 on the skip track 10 and is dumped into the sup lemental hopper 8. The upper bellx 12 is t en raised through the bell beam 14 and' the connecting mechanism by the bell actuating cylinder 18 and the stock in the ho per 8 is discharged in the hopper 5. As the ell 12 is raised the stock in t e hopfper 8 is directed inwardly toward the axis o the ho(pper by the sloping sides of the hopper 8 an strikes upon the inclined deflector or chute 25 which is secured to the lower end of the hollow b'ell rod 24, and is directed by this deflectorto one side of the hopper 5. The bell 12 is then lowered to close the mouth of the supplemental hoplper 8 and more stock is to t dum ed 1n 1s hopper by theskip cars 9.

Successive charges ofjstock are de ivered into the' hopper 8 and it is discharged from the hopper Sinto, the hopper'5 until, the desired amount of material isin the lower hopper 5. The o eration `of raising and lowering the top bel 12 also. rotates the deflector 25 through a part of a revolution, as shown being slightly more than one Illlarter turn, and in this way, the successive s 'p loads of stock around the axis of. the lower faces 46, 47. By gearing the turnin again? discharge u on the de iector 25 and hopper in suchA manner as will equally distribute the coarse and fine materials within the interior of the furnace.
The above described operation is repeated as often as is necessary to keep the stock at the desired height within the furnace chamber 2. When the bell 12 is raised and lowered by means of the bell operating mechani lsm, the sleeve o1' coupling 26 on the upper end of the bell rod 24 is also raised and lowered and when this coupling is so actuated the oppositely facing lugs or projections 27 and 28 on contact with the inclined faces 33 and 34 on the turning jaws 31 and 32 and are turned through a part of a revolution and through the rod 24, turn the inclined deector 25 on .the lower end of this rod.

ends of the necks 35 and 36 areprovidedl with the gear wheels 37, 38 by meansof which the jaws 31, 32 arev rotated. The gears 37, 38 -mesh with similar gears 39 and 40 which are mounted upon the op osite en d of the vertical shaft 41, this shafteing carried in the bearings 42 and 43. Adjustably secured on the shaft 41 are turning j'aws 44 and 45 and the inclined faces 46, 47 o'f these jaws by contacting with the finger 48 forming part of the, cross head and which is raised and lowered by the opening and closing of the small bell 12, are turned on their axis and throu h the meshing gear wheels rotate these whee s and the projecting turningjaws 31, 32.
As shown in Fig. 3, the turning jaws 31, 32 i each have four inclined faces 33 and 34 while the turning jaws 44, 45 each have six turning mechanism as shown, each time the be 12 is lifted the bell rod 24 andl deflector 25 are turned one-eighth of a revolution bythe lugs 27 contacting with the inclined faces 33 on the turning 'aws 3l and when the bell rod 24 and inclined ered, the lug 28 on the lower end of the sleeve 26 contacts with and is turned by the inclined faces 34 on the turning jaws 32.
