TABLE.
Specification of Letters recent.
IPatented Sept. 15, recs.
7 Application filed April 28, 1908. Serial Elm-429,334.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Adults BARKER PHE- LAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Alliance, in the county of Boxbutte and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Im roved Table, of which the following is a in clear and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in tables, and more particularly to that type of table in which there is provided a compartment beneath the top thereof, which may be uncovered by moving said top. The compartment may be employed for the storage of kitchen or table articles,.or may, if desired, be'employed as a sink. P
The object of my invention is to provide a table in which the to. thereof is formed of a pluralit of separate eaves or sections, preferably our in number and so arranged that all four sections may be in the same plane, so as to present a table surface of the maximum area, or the sections may be arranged in two parallel planes to cover thechamber or compartment and present a table surface of onealf the area, or in which the sections may be swung outwardly to uncover the chamber and provide for the supporting of articles at each end thereof. 1
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formin a part of this specification, in which simi ar characters of reference indicate corres onding parts in both the figures, and in which I Figure 1 is a perspective view of a table construct-e in accordance with my invention; and ig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough. a In my improved. table, I provide a compartment or chamber 10, having .a bottom 11, oppositely-dis osed ends 12, and oppositely-disposed si es 13. The compartment is supported at its four corners by suitable legs 14 and about its upper edge is a'rect'am gular frame 15. This frame serves to support the top of the table, which lattereme odies the main features of m invention. The top is preferably formed of our sections 16, 17, 18 and 19, each of which is hinged to the frame 15. The end members 20 of the frame 15 extend to a slightly higher elevation the side members 21 of said frame,
1 and the difference in height. is s'ubs tantially equal to the thickness of the top sections 16 and 17. These last-mentionedsections are hinged to the end members 20 of the frame sides of the compartment.
limiting position, they may at the inner'edgesthereof and are adapted when folded toward each other, to rest upon the side members 21 and lie flush with the u per surfaces of the two end members 20. T e two top sections 18 and 19 are also hinged to the endv members 200i the frame, but are hinged to the outer edges thereof, so that when swung outwardly they lie flush with the up er surfaces of the members 20, but when *olded inwardly to lie above the sections 16 and 17, they cover the hinges of the latter and said end members 20.
In the use of myimproved table, all of the table sections may be folded inwardly, so
. that the table topproper isformed by the sections 18 and 19 and the other two sections are entirely concealed. The table then presents a to surface of the minimum area and the top or the-chamber or compartment 10 is covered. "When it is desired to increase the area of the top of the table, the two sections 18 and 19 may be swung outwardly, so that they will lie in the same plane with the sec tions'lfi and 17. The table will then have a proximately twice the area as before, and
t e table top proper will be formed by the four sections 18, 16, 17 and 19, arranged in series.
"When in this position, the sections may be supported by any suitable form of bracketor rod, as, for instance, the sliding rods 22. y
"W hen it is desired to use the compartment 10 as a sink, or when it is desired to place any article therein, the sections 16 and 17 may be folded outwardly to lie above the sections 18 and 19, as indicated at the lefthand end of Fig. 2, and the table will then present a supportin surface of substantially the samearea as shown in Fig. 1, but divided into two portions with the compartment 10 disposed intermediate the same.
' In connection with the construction above described, I may, if desired, employ a second chamberor compartment 23 supported by the corner posts or legs 14 at a istance below the compartment 10. The sides, ends and bottom of this compartment may be formed in any suitable manner, but there is preferably rovided a topformed of two sections 2 and 25, slidable endwise between the posts and held within oppositely-disposed guides 25 at the upper edges of the opposite By pulling these cover sections 24 and 25 outwardly to their also be. used as supports, while, at the same time, the comertment is'unco'vered to ermit' of articles eing laced therein or ta en therefrom.
Having thus described my invention, 1
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters ment, or all of the sections may be folded outwardly to uncover the compartment, or
seems two of said sections may remain over said compartment to close the same and the other 15 two of said sections folded outwardly and into elinement with the two compartmentcovering sections. c
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 2o .two subscribing witnesses.
