snap rings and the free ends of the wide ring in line with these bridges so that in moving across the. port the joints will be held in their normal positions.
From the foregoing description taken in l connection with the drawings it becomes clear that I have provided a packing which fulfils all the conditions set forth as the object of my invention.
Heretofore attempts have been made to use a, wide steam expansible packing ring but when upon either side of the port the friction. has been excessive, and when over the port the ring would collapse and leak. Solid wide rings or rin s bolted together at the ends have been tried lint all have been abandoned on account of leakage or excessive friction.
My improvement is designed to obviate the im erfections of former constructions.
ile I have illustrated and described only one example of the physical embodiment of my invention, I do not thereby intend to restrict its scope to such example as in practice changes may be introduced which will embody the principle and not constitute sub- What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A acking for pistons and piston valves comprising a wide ring and two snap rin s inter ocked, each of said snap ringsbeing su 2. The combination with a piston or piston valve, of a packing comprising two snap rin s and a wide ring between the snap rings an positively engaging said rings, but movable relative to-said snapringa-each of said snap rings. being xpansible.
3. The combination with a piston or piston valve, of. a packing comprising two snap rings, and a wide ring; the said rings-having I tongues and moves.
" 4. The com in'ation with a piston. or piston valve, of two snap rings, a wide ring, and a 5. The combination with a piston or piston ble snap rings each being substantia ly in one piece, and a wide ring positively engaging the snap rin s, and means for introucing motive fluid eneath one of the snap rings.
fifThe combination with a piston or piston valve, of two snap rings and a wide ring,
means being provided for introducing motive fluid through the wide ring and to its inner surface when the same is in communication with a port.
7. The combination with'a piston or piston of two snap rings and a wide ring;
holes 17 and passage 22 being provided for introducing motive fluid beneath the wide ring and one snap ring when the wide ring is in communication with a port.
8. The combination with a piston or piston valve, of two snap rings, and a wide ring; means as hole 19 and hole 17,being provided for introducing motive fluid beneath one snap ring when steam. is in use, and beneath the wide ring when the same is in communication with aiport.
valve, means as 9. The combination with a piston or piston valve, of two sna rings, and a wide ring; means as hole 19, ole 17 and passage'22,being provided for introducting steam under one snap ring continuously, and beneath the wide ring and the other snap ring when the wide ring is in communication with a port.
10. The combination with a piston or piston valve, of a packing comprising three movable interlocking rings; and means for introducing motive fluid under one edge of the packing when the engine isworking steam.
11. The combination with a piston or plS ton valve, of a packing rings and a central ring; and. means for introducing steam through the packing when the sameis in communication with a port.
12. The combination'with a piston or piston valve, of a packing, and means as hole 19 and hole 22 for introducing steam continn-' ously beneath one edge of the packing, and beneath the opposite edge of the packing only when the same is in communication with a port.
13.- The combination with a piston or piston valve, of a packing comprising two snap rings each having a groove in its side, and a wide ring with its edges located in the grooves and movable therein.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. 4
