WATER-PURIFYING- APPARATUS.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLns P. VAN GUNDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Catonsville, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nater-Purifying Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to water purifying apparatus of the type wherein a determinate quantity of chemical is .introduced into the water so that the impurities therein are precipitated or neutralized according to the result desired and chemicals used.
The invention consists in an improved device whereby the amount of chemical introduced is varied according to the variations in the water supply.
My invention will be understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts in the several 'figures of drawing and wherein Figure 1, is a central vertical section showing my improved apparatus, mounted on the top of a settling tank; Fig. 2, is an enlarged end view of the adjustable outilow opening of the water reservoir; Fig. 3, is a similar view of the tilting chemical feed box.
1il designates a settling tank equipped in any suitable manner with flushing valves, iilter and overflow and having in the present instance a central pipe 2a therein which may have suitable openings into the tank in the lower part thereof (not shown). The tank la may have overflow 3 and a filter 4a of excelsior or the like. A suitable perforated baille 5at and a conical funnel 6a may be provided at the top of said pipe 2tL for the admis sion of water thereinto. Supported over the top of the tank lCL and securely held on each side of the central pipe 2u are I-beams 2b. The water supply pipe 7, delivers into a reservoir 8, said reservoir being mounted on the I-beams so that its overflow or open end overhangs as shown the funnel 6 at the upper end of pipe 2a. A suitable vertical slot 9a is provided at the overflow .end of the reservoir 8, the opening or width of the slot being adjustable and a preferred means for effecting such an adjustment (see Fig. 2) is to have an adjustable plate 9D adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.

ll is a tilting chemical feed box or holder which is suitably pivoted at l0'd1 to a cross piece 10lo supported on the I-beams 2b and so arranged that its open end also overhangs the outer edge of funnel 62 l0C is a cross piece also supported on the I-beams 2b and which acts as a stop for the tilting box 1IEL in its lowest or horizontal position. This tilting chemical box has an opening or slot l2a in its end overhanging the funnel 6ct the arrangement being such that upon the tilting of the box Il, the contents thereof are emptied more or less rapidly according to the amount of tilting, through the slot 12CL into the funnel 6u and central pipe 2a. This slot 12a is preferably made adjustable as shown in Fig. 3, and consists of similar means as that for the reservoir in being provided with an adjustable plate 13 adapted to have itS position regulated by suitable locking screws 145L which screws may be threaded through a rib l5 on the box. Another opening or slot 16a is formed in the end of the chemical box l la opposite the slot l20L for the purpose hereinafter explained.
Pivotally supported at I7ZL upon a suitable standard 17b is a leverl 18a, said lever having a pivoted connection at 19L at its remote end to the rod 2()a of a float 201. Said float may be guided ina perforated cylinder 2lLL suitably arranged in the reservoir 8a. The lever 1S@L has a connection at 22a with the tilting chemical box l la at a point opposite the pivot l()EL orapproximately so. A chemical feed pipe 24a is arranged to deliver into the chemical box 11, Bya forcing device (not shown) or other means a constant flow of chemical is fed through the pipe 24a somewhat iir excess of what is normally required for treating the water as supplie by the pipo 7a. chemical return pipe 23, which may have a funnel at its top is arranged directly underneath the opening or slot 16a.
The operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing description. When the pipe 7L delivers a larger quantity of water than usual, the water level in the reservoir 8'LL rises thereby lifting the float 20a. This float by the connections 19",l and 22a with the chemical box ll'LL will cause said box to be tilted to a greater extent, thus emptying a correspondingly larger proportion of the chemical therein into the funnel 6a to mix with the water from the reservoir 8a to be purified and permitting a smaller proportion of chemical to return by the opening or slot 16a and pipe 23a.
When the volume of water supplied by pipe 7a falls below normal the reverse operation takes place, the box 11aL assuming more nearly a horizontal position and hence a larger proportion of chemical will be discharged by slot or opening 16a into the return pipe 23il and a smaller amount will be added to the water flowing into funnel 6a,
The adjustability of the openings or slots l2a and QiL respectively in the chemical box 11LL and reservoir Sa, enables me to change within wide limits, or preserve a predetermined ratio between the water and chemical fed thereto.
The lever 18*L may be provided with a suitable counterweight 25a, if desired, to facilitate tilting of the box llt.- The perforate cylinder 2].a serves as a guide for the Vfloat 20EL and also prevents too sudden fluctuations of the float by throttling the ingress of water thereto.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as followsl. A water purifying apparatus comprising a reservoir having an outlet, means for feeding water to said reservoir, a tilting chemical feed box having an outlet, means connected to the chemical feed box and controlled by the volume of water 'in said reservoir for variably tilting said chemical feed box and automatically varying the outflow of chemical from said feed box.
2. A water purifyingapparatus comprising a reservoir having an outlet, means for varying the outflow' from saidreservoir, means for feeding water to said reservoir, a tilting chemical feed box having an outlet, means connected to the chemical feed box and controlled by the volume of water in said reservoir for variably tilting said chemical feed box and automatically varying the outflow of chemical from said feed box.
3. A water purifying apparatus comprising a reservoir having an outlet, means for feeding water to said reservoir, a tilting chemical feed box having an outlet, means for adjusting the size of said feed box outlet, means connected to the chemical feed box and controlled by the volume of water in said reservoir for variably tilting said chemical feed box and automatically varying the outflow of chemical from said feed box.
4. A water purifying apparatus comprising a reservoir having an outlet, means for varying the outflow from said reservoir, means for feeding water to said reservoir, a tilting chemical feed box having an outlet, means for adjusting the size of said feed box outlet, means connected to the chemical feed box and controlled by the volume of water in said reservoir for variably tilting said chemical feed box and automatically varying the outflow of chemical from said feed box.
5. A water purifying apparatus comprising a reservoir, a discharge therefrom, variable according to the volume of water therein, a water supply thereto, a chemical supply, a tilting chemical box having a vertical slot therein, and connections to move said box to' vary automatically the outflow of chemical from said box according to the supply of water in said reservoir.
6. A water purifying apparatus comprising a reservoir, a water supply thereto, a chemicall supply, a movable chemical box, said box having a vertical slot, devices connected with said box and arranged to be controlled by the supply of water in the reservoir for automatically Varying the output of chemical from said box, and areturn pipe adjacent said box arranged to lreceive the excess of chemical.
7. A water purifying apparatus comprising a reservoir, having a variable discharge, a water supply thereto, a chemical supply, a tilting chemical box having vertical slots therein at its opposite ends, one of said slots being adapted to deliver into the outfiow of said reservoir, and the other to a return pi el and connections for tlltmg said box varlally according to the volume of water in said reservoir.
8. A water purifying apparatus comprising a reservoir, a vertical discharge slot therein, a water supply thereto, a chemical supply, a tilting chemical box, vertical slots therein at the opposite ends, one of said slots being arranged to deliver into the outflow of the reservoir, means for adjusting the width of said latter slot and connections for variably tilting said box according to the volume of water in the reservoir.

A water purifying apparatus comprising a reservoir, a variable discharge therefrom, a water supply thereto, a chemical supply, a tilting chemical box, having a variable discharge, 'a float in said reservoir and connections between said float and said chemical box to automatically move the latter so as to discharge variable quantities of chemical according to the position of said float.

A water purifying apparatus comprising a reservoir, a water supply thereto, a chemical supply, a tilting chemical box, having vertical slots at its opposite ends, one of said slots being arranged to discharge into the outflow of said reservoir and the other into a return pipe, a float in said reservoir and connections from said float to said box whereby the latter will be tilted variably according to the position of the float.

A water purifying apparatus comprising a reservoir, a vertical discharge slot therein, a water supply thereto, a chemical supply, a tilting chemical box having vertical slots in its opposite ends, one of said slots bein'g adjustable and arranged to empty into the outflow of said reservoir, a return pipe arranged to receive the discharge from the other of said slots, a float guided in said reservoir, a pivoted lever connected to said float and to said box and arranged to tilt the box variably according to the vertical position of the float.
12. A water purifying apparatus comprising a reservoir, having a variable discharge, a water supply thereto, a chemical supply, a tilting chemical box having openings therein at its opposite ends, one of said openings being adapted to deliver into the outflow of said reservoir and the other to a return pipe, and connections for tilting said holder variably according to the volume of water in said mixing box.
13. A water purifying apparatus comprising a reservoir, a vertical discharge slot therein, a water supply thereto a chemical supply, a tilting chemical box, openings therein at the opposite ends, vone of said openings being arranged to deliver into the outflow of said reservoir, means for adjusting the width of one of said openings and connections for variably tilting said box to lthe volume of water in the reservoir.
14. A water purifying apparatus comprising a reservoir, a water supply thereto, a chemical supply, a tilting chemical box, having openings at its opposite ends, one of said openings being arranged to discharge into the outflow of said reservoir, and the other into a return pipe, a fioat in said reservoir, and connections from said float to said box whereby the latter will be tilted variably according to the position of the float.

A water purifying apparatus comprising a reservoir, a vertical discharge slot therein, a water supply thereto, a chemical supply, a tilting chemical box having openings inits opposite ends, one of said openings being adjustable and arranged to empty into the outflow of said reservoir, a return pipe arranged. to receive the discharge from the other of said openings, a float guided inl said reservoir, a pivoted lever connected to said float and to said box and arranged to tilt the box variably according to the vertical position of the lioat.

A water softening apparatus including a tilting container for chemical having a discharge opening for permitting the passage of' the chemical into the water, and mechanism automatically operated by the water for causing the level of the chemical to occupy varying positions relatively with respect to the discharge opening to alter the quantity of chemical supplied to the water as the quantity of water supplied for treatment varies.

A water softeningapparatus including a tilting container for chemical having a discharge opening for permitting the passage of chemical into the water, and mechanism automatically operated by the water for regulatingl the position of the container to thereby adjust thelevel of the chemical with respect to the discharge opening to vary the quantity of chemical supplied to the water as the quantity of water supplied for treatment varies.

A water softening apparatus including a tilting container for chemical having a discharge opening for permitting the passage of chemicalv into the water, and mechanism automatically operated by the water for regulating the level of the chemical with respect to the discharge opening to vary the quantity of chemical supplied to the water as the quantity of water supplied for treatment varies, said mechanism including a float supported by the water and having operative connection with said container.

A water softening apparatus including a tilting container for chemical having a discharge opening for permitting the passage of chemical into the water, and mechanism automatically operated by the water for regulating the position of the container to therebyadjust the level of the chemical with respect to the discharge opening to vary the quantity of chemical supplied to the water as the quantity of water supplied for treatment varies, said mechanism including a float supported by the water and having operative connection with said container'.

A water softening apparatus including a tilting liquid container having a discharge opening for permitting the passage of liquid from the container, and mechanism automatically operated by the water provided for treatment for causing the level of the liquid to occupy varying positions relatively with respect to the discharge opening to alter the quantity of liquid discharged from the container as the quantity of water supplied for treatment varies.

A water softening apparatus including a tilting liquid container having a discharge opening for permitting the passage of liquid from the container, and mechanism automatically operated by the water provided for treatment for regulating the position of the container to thereby adjust the level of the liquid within the container relatively with respect to the discharge opening to alter the quantity of liquid discharged from the container as the quantity of water supplied for treatment varies.
