SAWING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1908.
Application filed December 4, 1907. Serial No, 405,056.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CI-IARLEs H. PRESCOTT, citizen of the United States, residing at East Liverpool, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Im rovemcnts in Sawing Apparatus, of which t 1e following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in sawing apparatus and relates articularly to an improved device of this ciiaracter especially designed for cutting notches or grooves in joists or similar timbers for the accommodation of gas, water or other pipes.
The invention has for its ob'ect an improved sawing apparatus for t is purpose which will be simple and durable in construction and efiicient in operation, and capable ofadjustment to single or double joists, that is, joists of different widths and a so ca able of adjustment so as to bring the saw b ades near to or farther away from each other to cut a notch of the desired size.
With thisand other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arran ements and combinations shall hereinafter describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sawin apparatus, the upper portion of the handle an broken away; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of t e ap aratus; Fig. 3 is a similar view at right an es to Fig. 2 Fig. 4 is a top plan view of t e feed wheel; and, Fig. 5 1s a detail sectional view on the line 55 of Fig.3.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followin descriptlon and indicated in all the views 0 the drawings by the same reference characters.
My improved sawing apparatus comprises a' standard 1 which is provided with a base 2 adapted to rest on a oist or other timber to be out, said stand'ar bein provided at its lower end with a preferab y relativel stationary clamping jaw 3. A movable 0 amping jaw 4 coacts with the jaw. 3 and is preferably provided with a bifurcated and slotted arm 5 working in the base of the standard 1 and formed with two sets of notches 6 and 7, as clearly illustrated in the drawings. A cam lever 8 is provided with pins or trunnions 9 designed to rest in either of the notches 6 and 7 so as to clamp the two jaws 3 and 4 together against opposite sides of the joist. The two sets of notches are provided so that the clamping device at the foot of the standard may be susceptible to adjustment for either a single joist of ordinary width or a joist of double thickness.
The standard 1 is formed at its upper end with a longitudinally extending slot 10 in which the supporting arm 11 is received and is mounted to move. A vertically disposed feed screw 12 works through one end of the supporting arm 11. Said screw rests at its lower end upon a, boss 13 projecting from the standard 1, and the feed wheel 14 is mounted on the upper end of said screw, said feed wheel being provided with a series of ins or tappets 15, and having a ratchet an pawl connection with the screw.
One end of the supporting arm 11 is formed with a trunnion upon which the shank 16 of the saw carrier is mounted to oscillate in a vertical plane. The u per end of the shank 16 has a preferably hol ow handle 17 secured to it, said handle portion bein formed at its upper end with any desire form of hand grip, as shown. The lower end offset foot 18 formed with a screw-threaded borein which the screw-rod 19 works. Said screw-rod is mounted in a lu 20 on the adjustable saw-clamp 21 whic is formed to embrace the standard foot 18, the members 21 of the saw clamp working in rooved flanges 18* formed on the sides of t e foot, the adjustable saw-clamp being thus mounted to move towards and from the stationary saw-clamp 22. The saw-blades 23 are secured in the respective saw-clamps by bolts or the like, as shown. By turning the screwrod 19, the distance between the saw-blades may be varied, according to the width of notch that it is desired to out. The shank 16 .of' the shank 16 is formed with a laterally In the practical use of my improved sawing apparatus, the standard 1 is secured to the joist to be cut, by the clamping jaws 3 and 4 and the operator swings the saw-carrier back and forth on its pivot, this oscillation of the saw-carrier effecting the gradual downward feed of the saws to the desired depth. The width of the notch is manifestly determined by the adjustment of the screw rod 19, and the arrangement of the relatively movable jaw 4 and cam lever 8 provides for the secure attachment of the apparatus to either a single joist of the ordinary width, or a double joist. After the two kerfs have been formed the wood between them may be removed by chisel and hammer or in any other way to complete the formation of the notch.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. An apparatus of the character described, comprising a standard formed at its upper end with a longitudinally extending slot and in its rear side with a boss belowthe slot, a supporting arm mounted to move vertically in said slot, a saw-carrier mounted to oscillate on the front end thereof, a sawing device secured to said saw-carrier, a feed screw resting on said boss and working through the rear end of the arm, and a feed wheel secured to the upper end of said screw and provided with a series of radially extending tappets projecting from its periphery, the saw-carrier eing provided above the standard with a rearwardly projecting dog arranged to strike said tappets, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An apparatus of the character de scribed, comprising a standard, provided at its lower end with a clamp, a saw-carrier embodying a shank mounted to oscillate on said standard, a relatively stationary saw clamp secured. rigidly to the lower end of said shank, a relatively movable saw clamp mounted on the lower end of said shank and means for adjusting the last named clamp to and from the other clamp.
8. An apparatus of the character described, comprising a standard provided at its lower end with a clamping means, a saw carrier embodying a shank mounted to oscillate on said standard said shank being provided with an offset foot, said foot being formed at its side edges with grooved flanges, a relatively stationary saw clamp rigidly secured to saidfoot, an adjustable saw clamp provided with a fork embracing said foot, the members of the fork fitting in the grooved flanges of the foot, said last named clamp being also formed with a lug, and an adjusting screw working therethrough and extending into the said foot.
n testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. PRESCOTT.
