Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1908.
Application filed. April 1c, 1908. Serial No. 427,455.
waukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SaslbPivots; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sash pivots and particularly to an improved pivot-or pivoting mechanism to be used in connection with fire-proof windows whose sashes and frames are made up of sheet metal.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is hmitedkin its movement, and which closes automa 1cally when released so as to cut oil draft through the building.
Preferably these windows:are held open by fusible links so that upon an excessiverise in temperature, due to a fire or other similar cause, they are released and swing into closed position automatically, and while I have not shown any means for holding the sash in open position, I wish it understood that I may use any automatic means for releasing the sash upon a predetermined rise 1n temperature, the universal means as hereinbefore stated being g fusible link. I
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for adjusting the pivotal connection of the sash so that no manner of warping, expansion or contraction will hold the sash in open position when it is desired to have it closed.
Another object of the invention is .to provide mean whereby the limiting means above mentioned may be rendered inoperative so as to permit the window to be swung oplen to a greater degree for washing or any '0 er pur ose.
Vi ith these and other objects in view, the invention. consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement. of parts as will be described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
,In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front elevation, partly in section, and on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3 is a fragmentar vertical sectional view taken on line 33 0 Fig. 2
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional View of the pivot bolt and-its associated parts; and Fig. 5 is a modification thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, and especially'to Fig. 1, where the sash is pivoted in the frame, I have indicated the sash by the numeral. 1, and the frame by the numeral, 2. Both the sash and the frame are constructed in a similar manner and are Secured to the frame, 2, is a supporting.
arm, 6,, by bolts,- 7, which pass through the enlarged apertures, 8, of the frame, 6, and engage the backing, 4, of the frame. These apertures are made of a considerably larger internal diameter than the external diameter of the bolt so as to permit of ad'ustment at all times. As the arms and 0t er connections with the sash are identical on both sides of the frame, I shall describe onlyone, and its associated parts. The arm 6 is bent outwardly as at 9, and is then provided with an upstanding projection, 10, apertured at 11 to receive the pivot bolt, 12, which passes through the hushed opening, 13, formed in v the right-angular flange, 14, of the sash plate,
15. The bolt, 12, is threaded into'the aper- I ture, 11, so as to hold it stationary with respect to the arm, 6, so that the sash. rotates upon the enlarged portion of the belt which is within the bushed opening, 13. The
flange, 14, is provided above the wit, 12, and 1 adjacent the body, 15, with a pivot pin, 16, upon which is carried a limiting awl, 17 having a weighted outer end, 18, anc a thumb piece, 19, for raising the same. Vi hen the sash is tilted uponthe pivotal bolt, .12, the
pawl travels over the upper surface of the arm, 6, until'it engages the limiting stud, 20, formed upon the arm, which prevents any further movement of the sash. By pressing back on the thumb piece 19 of the pawl, the latter may be carried over the lug 20 so that the framemay be tilted to any desired position for thepurpose of washing the glass, or for any other purpose. The thumb piece arranged so that the weighted end of the limiting pawl cannot be tilted past the center,
because the thumb piece engages the sash when pressed back and when released it will drop by gravity upon the u per surface of the arm 6. Unless held open by the fusible link before mentioned, the sash will drop back to normal or closed position, owing to the fact that the sash plate, 15, and the pivot bolt are slightly above the horizontal center of the frame.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the frame 2 is provided with a bushed opening, 21, throu h which the smooth outer end, 22, of the boTt, 23, is adapted to pass, the bolt being held securely in the flange 14 by screw threads, 24.v 'These bushings around the openings are of brass, or other non-rusting material in order to conform to the regulations of the National Board of Fire Underwriters, which requires that hinge parts of -fire-pr0of windows be of ,non-corrosive metals.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A sash pivoting device comprising a sash plate member secured to the frame of the sash, a sup orting member adjustably secured to the stlle of the frame, a pivot bolt secured. to one of said members and having ivotal connection with the other member, a imiting stud on the supporting member, and a pawl carried by the sash supporting member adapted to engage said stud to determine the movement of the sash.
2. A sash pivoting device comprising a sash plate secured to the frame of the sash, an arm adjustably secured to the stile of the frame, a pivot bolt secured to the arm and having pivotal connection with the plate, a limiting stud on the arm and a pawl carried. by the plate adapted. to engage said stud to determine the movement of the sash.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand. in pri-isence of two subscribing witnesscs.
