Be it known that we, JOHN F. OHMEE and FRANK G. OoLBY, citizens of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have in- In a detail description of the invention, similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
1 and' 2 designate respectively, two fare registering machines which are designed to be employed in a single car to obtain registration of an increased number of fares. One of these machines has a capacity for registering fare denominations from 5c. to 55o. as indicated in the inner concentric group of figures on the auxiliary indicator 3, and the other of said machines has a capacity for registering Aand indicating fares from 60e. to $1.05, also passes and transfers, as indicated on the outer concentric row of figures. Each machine has a bank of counters Ll upon which each fare value is registered, and each bank of counters has the usual individual actuating member 5 with the intervening mechin Operating .Mechanism for Fare-Registers; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in operating mechanism foi` fare registers, where two separate machines are utilized for registering and indicating fares.
The object of the invention is to provide a single pull rope or connection with the operating devices proper and which extends on the interior of the car at suitable points.
I-Ieretofore, in using two separate machines for registering and indicating fares, a separate pull rope or connection on the interior of the car has been foundnecessary in connection with each machine. One of these pull ropes is dispensed with and a single rope or flexible connection with the operating devices is substituted. The advantage of this is highly appreciated by the conductor whose duties are to register the, fares as collected, which he does in each case by seizing the rope or flexible connection each time and is not required to select from two pull ropes the one he desires to operate in registering the fares on one or both machines.
Preceding a detailed description of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1, is a front elevation of two registering machines arranged in juxtaposition with our-improved operating connection a plied. The operating mechanism comprises a lever 6 fulcrumed on the frame 7 arranged in the rear of the register casing, and a lifting bar 8, the ends of which inclose guide strips 9 secured to the frame 7. The actuator carriage 10 of each machine supports an actuator 11 having oppositely projected lugs 12 and 18, the former of which lies below the lugs 14 on the rear of the individual actuating members 5 according to the movement .given the carriage 10.
'Ihe lug 12 of the actuator 11 extends through a longitudinal slot 15 in the lifting bar 8, and when said bar 8 is elevated the actuator 11 which moves freely in its carriage 410 is likewise elevated and therewith the particular individual actuating member 5 of the bank of counters selected for operation. On the inner face of the frame 7 there is a series of vanes 16 which provide intervening spaces 17 through which the rearwardly extended lug 13 of the actuator 11 may pass when the carriage 10 of said actuator is moved to the proper position. If the carriage is not moved to a proper position to permit of the operation of a counter, the ribs 16 act as a stop to prevent the actuator from being lifted and likewise prevents the lifting bar 8 from being lifted. It will be understood that the setting rod 21 is provided with the necessary number of hand grips at various points by which the said rod is turned to bring the pointer to the desired position to indicate the fare in either machine. The positions of the carriages 10 10 are such that the carriage of one machine only can be moved in operative relation with the counters of that machine, the carriage of the other machine being in the meantime moved to a position which brings the actuator in such carriage below one of the vanes 16 on the operating frame 7.
In order to dispense with one of the pull ropes which has heretofore been necessary in operating two machines in a single car, we conneet the operating levers 6 of the two machines with a single rope or flexible connection 23 and. pass said rope around a pulley 24 having a clevis with an extended. eye 25 to which a single flexible member or pull rope 26 is attached. This pull rope 26 in making the turn in extending along the interior of the car, passes around one or more guide pulleys 27 arranged at the proper points. At points elsewhere on the interior of the car there are located a suitable number of eyes (not shown) in which the pull rope is supported in an operative position. It will be readily seen that in pulling upon this single operating member or rope 26, the levers 6 of both machines are actuated to elevate the lifting bars 8. The selected fare for registration in one or the other of the machines will thus be operated, while the carriage 10 of the other machine will at the same time that the other carriage is set to an operative position, be moved out of an operative position or below one of the vanes 16 on the frame of the operating device. Each register is provided with the usual sight opening 27 through which the indicator tablets 28 are exposed. 29 are two blinds which operate to close and open the sight openings according to the operation of one or the other machine. rl`he blinds 29 are attached to vertical rods 80 which move in guides 31 on the front of the machine. 1. The combination with two register mechanisms, of a single cord o1" cable connected with the mechanism of each register, a pulley intervening between either end of said cord or cable, and means for preventing the operation of the mechanism of one register, while the mechanism of the other register is in an operative condition.
2. The combination with two series of counters, each series being adapted to register fares of certain denominations, individual actuating devices for each counter, a main actuating member for the individual actuating devices of each series of counters, said main actuating members being' adapted to upward movements in operating the individual actuating devices of any particular counter of either series, a single flexible connection extending to each of said main actuating members and by means of which one or the other of said. main actuating members is operated by pulling upon said flexible connection, and means for preventing one of said main actuating' members from being operated while the other is actuated.
3. The combination with two register mechanisms, of ilexible means consistingl of a pull rope connected to the mechanisms of both registers, and whereby the mechanism of one or the other register may be operated, and means for preventing the operation of one mechanism while the other mechanism is being operated.
4. The combination with two register mechanisms including .a main actuating' member for each of such mechanisms, a cord or cable looped around a flexible connection, and the ends of which are connected with the main actuating members, a single cord or cable extending from said flexible connection and by means of which one or the other of the main actuating members may be operated by drawing' upon said sing'lc rope or cable, and means for preventing the operation of one of said main actuating members while the other is being operated.
5. In a fare register', the combination with two machines each one of which is adapted to register certain specific fares, of a lifting' bar for each machine adapted to actuate the mechanism of such machine to register and indicate the fares, an operating' lever coperating with each lifting bar, a flexible connection between the operating levers of the two machines, said flexible connections being' looped around an anti-friction connection, a pull rope connected to said anti-friction connection and extending' on the interior of the car, said pull rope being' adapted to actuate the levers of each machine and means for preventing an' elevation of one of said lifting bars while the other is being elevated by drawing upon said pull rope.
6. In a fare register, the herein-describedk operating mechanism for fare registers, oomprising two lifting bars each one of which is adapted to operate the mechanism of a fare register, a lever engaging each of said lifting bars to elevate the same a cable or rope having its ends connected to said levers, a pulley around which said cable or rope passes, a single operating rope connected to said pulley and extending on the interior of the oar and whereby the operating devices of either machine may be operated from a single pull rope, and means for preventing an elevation 15 of one of said lifting bars while the other of said lifting bars is being elevated by drawing upon the cable or rope.
