To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERASTUS L. BooTI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Gate-Operating Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gates and particularly to an operating mechanism therefor whereby the gate may be readily operated at a point remote therefrom, and has for its objects to produce an inexpensive device of this character of simple construction, which is readily applicable to gates now in use and one in which provision is made for actuating the mechanism to open the'gate at a point nearby the latter.
To these ends the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the position of the parts at the beginning of the opening operation. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a vertical post or standard to which is pivoted a gate 2, of the usual or any preferred construction, having a top rail 3. This gate is designed to close upon an outer post 4, but to remain at all times free from engagement therewith. The post 1 extends a suitable distance above the gate and carries a hori.
zontal bar 5 extending parallel with the road way and provided, at points suitably distant from and upon the opposite sides of the gate, with outer guides 6, while upon one side, between the post and the outer guides, the bar carries a pair of inner guides 7.
A sectional operating member 8 is provided, preferably in the form of a pair of links 9*10 having their inner meeting ends pivotally connected at 11 and their outer ends pivoted respectively to the top rail of the gate and a frame bar 12 attached at one end to the post 1 and supported at its outer end by a post 13. The link 9 is pivoted to the gate by a staple bolt 14, illustrated in Fig. 3, the longer arm of which passes through the top rail 3 and is engaged by a nut, while the shorter arm extends only partially .through the rail. The link is pivoted to the beam 12 by a bolt 15 having a bifurcated or forked end which receives the end of the link. The inner end of link 10 extends somewhat beyond the pivot bolt 11 and is provided at its outer end with a lateral projection 16 adapted to bear upon the upper edge of link 9 and maintain the links in proper position readily to break joint upon their initial gate opening movement.
Pivoted at one side of the center of link 10, as at 17, is an actuating bar 18 which extends upward from the link at a backward inclination from the vertical and has its upper end passed through an annular guide 19 formed at the end of a rod bolt 20 engaged with post 1. The guide 19 is of suiiicient diameter to permit free play of the bar therein during its gate opening and closing movements.
Attached to the upper end of bar 18 is an operating rope 21 passing through the inner guides 7 and thence along the lower edge of bar 5 to and through the outer guides 6 into position to be reached by a person seated in a vehicle.
In practice, supposing the parts to be in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, traction upon the operating rope serves to lift bar 18 thus causing the parts to assume the position shown in Fig. 2 and inaugurate the gate opening movement which continues automatically through momentum until the gate is fully opened. The actuation of bar 18 will swing the link 10 and initiate the closing movement which is completed through momentum of the gate. When in either its curely locked by the operating links.
In order to permit opening of the gate by foot passengers other than through the medium of rope 21, I pivot to the top rail 3 a horizontal rock-shaft or rod 22 journaled in suitable bearings 23 and having an eccentric or crank portion 24 bearing beneath the link 9 and an operating arm 25, adjacent to the outer end of the gate and normally occupying a vertical position, While the ortion 24 normally extends in a horizonta plane at right angles to the arm. Thus, when arm 25 is moved from a vertical toward a horizontal position, the eccentric portion 24 will move from a horizontal toward a vertical position,
.thereby lifting link 9 and causing the links to break joint and compel opening of the gate. The outer end of arm 25 is weighted sufliciently to permit the rock shaft automatic ally to assume its normal position when the lever is released.
From the foregoing it will be seen that .I
open or closed position, the gate will be seproduce a device of simple construction, which is admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view, but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the details herein set forth, inasmuch as minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, is
The combination with a post, of a gate pivoted thereto, a pair of links one of which is pivotally connected with the toprail of the gate, a rigid stop rail arranged at right angles to the gate and to which the other link is pivotally connected, a rock shaft carried by the top rail of the gate and provided with a crank adapted to engage the first named link, a bar pivotally connected with the secondnamed link, a rod rigid with the post and provided on its outer end with an eye through which the bar projects, rollers supported in horizontal position from a member supported by the post, and a rope engaging the rollers and secured to the bar.
