MECHANISM FOR CONTROLLING AIR AND SAND ON CARS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE SPIoER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Controlling Air and Sand on Cars, and 'do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
My invention relates to mechanism for controlling air and sand on cars, and the invention consists in a combination handle which is adapted to control both the flow of air to the brakes and the flow of sand to the wheels' to prevent slipping, all substantially as shown and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof shown with associated parts in full lines, as hereinafter fully described.
The design or purpose of theinvention as thus disclosed is to utilize one handle for two purposes, and which will enable a motor man to operate both the air brake and the sanding mechanism with one and the same hand and at the same time or successively as he may please, while he has his grip on the electrical controller or crank with the other hand, not shown.
The invention is, therefore, comprised essentially in the handle H as a whole, and which consists in or of several parts comprising a head it having a tubular hub h ada ted to engage upon the end of valve controlling stem or shaft S and rotate the same to open the rotatable valve V at the bottom thereof in the coupling O and of a crank shaped member B, having a sleeve 2 engaged upon a post 3 on head h, and an arm 4 at right angles to said sleeve adapted to engage stem 5 of the lift valve above the same in the coupling O. Presumably air is used in this latter connection to feed the sand and controlled by valve V therein having said stem 5. Now, having the two valves V and V relatively arranged as shown, and one rotatable and the other adapted to be lifted, and with the handle H constructed and operatively equi ped as shown, the two valves are controll able for either or both purposes by a single hand of the operator. ing handle H to either right or left as may be provided to operate the brake, and by rotating sleeve handle grip 8 on the stem 9 of said handle to operate the sanding mechanism or valve. Said sleeve 8 has a right angled projection 10 at its inner end provided with a substantially V shaped depression or recess 12 in its top engaging a roller 13 on the sleeve 2. It follows when sleeve 8 is axially ro tated on stem 9 that the projection 10 is rocked in respect to roller 13, in which case the said roller is caused to run up one side or the other of the depression or double cam 12 and raise sleeve 2 on its post 3 corres 0ndingly. This lifts arm 4 and raises va ve V through its stem 5, thus 0 ening the sanding channel as planned for. 1 ipe connections P and P respectively are made with the respective valve couplings, O and C.
Sleeve 2 should be splined or otherwise held in rotary engagement with post 3 but adapted to slide thereon within limits. Handle stem 9 is threaded into head h and all the foregoing arts are separable or knock-down. The handl is further provided with a cap 15 at or on its outer end and which is shown as extending inward far enough to make a definite grip for the handle when it is ordinarily operated for braking alone, while the sleeve 8 is shown as fluted or with a roughened surface so as to afford a more ready hold or grip when it is to be rotated and sanding is to be done.
As shown the entire handle structure is supported on stem or shaft S as a fixed member though rotatable, and with which the head it is rigid, and the valves V and V are arranged axially one over the other. The several parts comprising head h, and the parts 8, 9 and 15 are understood as being included in the handle proper. As to the said valves V and V they might possibly be ex changed as to function and the lower one be used for sanding and the upper for air brake, but this would not affect the scope and pur pose of the invention.
The handle roper as understood herein is that portion 0 the handle necessary to rotate shaft S and open valve V, and only in a sense comprises grip or sleeve 8, as the actual grip may be exerted mostly on cap 15.
What I claim is:
1. A combined sand and air controller for cars comprising a handle constructed to be rotated from a fixed pivot and having an axially rotatable part thereon adapted to set in operation a line of mechanism peculiar to itself. V
2. A handle mechanism for use on cars to control two separate valves, the same comprising a handle member having a sleeve" mounted thereon and operatively connected with one of said valves.
3. A controller handle for cars consisting dle and comprising an axially rotatable member and valve lifting parts in one of said lines of mechanism.
5. A controller mechanism for cars comprising two valves, a handle having a fixed pivot operatively connected with one of said valves, an axially rotatable sleeve on said handle having a substantially cam shaped projection, and a lift arm for the other valve operated from said cam shaped projection.
6. A controller handle for cars comprising a handle stem and a sleeve rotatable thereon having a projection with a substantially V shaped recess in its top, in combination with a vertically movable right angled valve controlling member operatively engaged with said recess. 7
7. The handle comprising a stem and a rotatable sleeve thereon having a right angled projection at its end with a substantially cam shaped working portion, in combination with a valve lifting member slidably supported and carrying a roller engaging said cam shaped surface.
8. The combination of the handle stern and the .head rigid therewith having a hub at its outer extremity and a post at its inner portion, a right angled lift member mounted slidably on said post and a sleeve on said handle stem operatively connected with said lift member.
9. A handle mechanism for car service comprising a handle having a central stem and a sleeve member rotatable thereon, a head fixed on said stem having a hub for supporting the same and a vertically disposed post, in combination with a'right angled part slidably mounted on said post and having a lateral projection operatively engaged by said sleeve member.
