CHURN.
` To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PETER B. OUPP and KANsAs N. EvERETT, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Van Wert, in the county of Van /Vert and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Churn, of which the following is a full, clearJ and eX- act description.
This invention relates to churns, and more especially to churns having a plurality of dashers movable in dierent directions, and arranged to be manually operated.
One object of this invention is to provide a device of the class described which is both simple and durable in construction and ineX- pensive to manufacture, and at the same time easy of manual operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide common means for operating the dashers in different directions.
A still further object is to provide a device of the class described having manual means operable in a substantially horizontal plane for driving the dashers of the churn, these dashers being so constructed that they may be operated either in the same or 1n opposite directions to one another.
Another object is to provide churn operating mechanism which is adjustable so that the churn dashers can be driven thereby in different directions or in the same direction.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention with the parts broken away to show the churn construction 5 and Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the same, and showing the means for actuating the device.-
We provide a receptacle 1 of wood or other suitable material, supported on legs 2. The
.latter are secured in position by meansof bolts or screws 3. A lid 4 seats in a groove 5 in the u per edges of four of the sides of the receptac e, and is held in position by means of catches 6, of common or preferred form. A sleeve 7 having a lateral extension 8 is mounted upon the lid 4 by means of screws or bolts 9 located in openings of the eXtension. This sleeve has arranged therein a head 10 consisting of a body member 11 and a cross bar 12. An opening 13 extends through the body member for a purpose to be hereinafter described. parallel hangers 14 having their upper ends 15 threaded and suitably constricted so as to pass through openings 16 in the ends of the cross bar 12, are secured in position by nuts 17. A dasher 18 having an opening 19 through the center thereof is mounted near the lower ends of the hangers 14. The latter are secured on opposite sides of the dasher by means of locking bolts 21. A plurality of openings 22 are provided in the dasher'. The latter may be constructed of any suitable material, such as Wood, metal or the like. A
spindle 23 is mounted in the opening 13 in the head and has a head member 24 at the upper end thereof. A dasher 27 is secured to the lower end of the spindle by means of locking bolts 28. Openings 29 extend through the dasher' 27. A pulley 25 adjacent to the head member 24, is rigidly secured to the spindle at that point in any suitable manner. A second pulley 26 immediately below the first is rigidly mounted upon the upper end of the body 11 of the head.
Mounted on the lid, firmly secured thereto by means of screws or bolts 30, is a bridge 31. The latter is so constructed that it passes over the head member 24 of the spindle and serves to limit the upward movement of the latter. Arranged on the bridge 31 are guides 32 which are securely held in position by means of rivets or bolts 33. Each guide has an opening 34 therethrough. The actuating mechanism includes a rod 35 movably located in the openings 34 of the guides. Secured by means of bolts 36 to the ends of the rod are frames 37 having oppositely disposed arms 38. Adjustably mounted upon the arms 38 by means of bolts 39, which have butteriiy nuts on the ends thereof, are two flexible members 40. These members .pass around the pulleys 25 and 26 respectively in opposite directions to one another. A manual grip 41 is secured to one of the end frames at a point Where the rod is attached to the frame. An outlet opening 42 having a plug 43 and a spout 44 under said opening for guiding the iow, are arranged on one side of the receptacle 1 near the bottom thereof. Cleats 45 are provided for lifting the churn.
. In operating the device the actuating mechanism is drawn backward and forward. 4
This movement causes the two pulleys to be rotated in opposite directions., and they in turn operate the dashers inside the churn box. The actuating mechanism may be so regulated that the dashers are rotated in either the same or in opposite directions to one another, by winding the flexible members about the pulleys in the same or opposite directions.
By constructing the churn body in the form of a square box, a saving of five to seven minutes of time is effected in the process of churning, as against twelve minutes when a round bodied churn is employed. Further, the lower dasher forces the cream in and out of the square corners and the upper dasher does the same, -but reversely, and by the combined action of the dashers, sixteen cuts of the cream are made. In round bodied churns, the action of the dashers causes the cream on passing through holes in the dasher to 'follow the motion of the dasher in circles, and agitation of the cream is not so fully accomplished as it is by causing the cream to contact with square corners.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a device of the class described, a receptacle having a lid, guides carried by said lid, a rod adapted to reciprocate in said guides, downwardly extending frames carried at the ends of said rod, churningmeans within said receptacle, pulleys for operating said churning means, and flexible members for actuating said pulleys, the said flexible members being secured to said frames.
2. In a device of the class described, a receptacle having a lid, a bracket secured to said lid and provided with guides, a rod mounted to reciprocate in said guides, downwardly extending 'frames carried at the ends of said rod and provided with oppositely disposed arms, churning means within the receptacle and having members extending through the lid, pulleys on said members 'for operating the churning means, flexible members for actuating said pulleys and having their ends secured to the arms of said end frames, and a handle on one of said end frames above the said arms.
3. In a device of the class described, a receptacle, said receptacle having a lid, a bridge secured to said lid, guides mounted on said bridge, said guides having openings therethrough, a rod passing through said openings in said guides, and downwardly extending frames mounted at the ends of said rod and provided with arms, churning means Within said receptacle, pulleys operating said churning means, and flexible members secured to the arms of said end frames and passing around said pulleys for actuating the same.
4. In a device of the class described, a receptacle, said receptacle having a lid, legs for 'supporting said receptacle in an upright said spindle having a head member at the A other end thereof, a pulley secured to said head, a second pulley secured at the upper' end of said spindle and adjacent to said head, a bridge mounted upon said lid and extending over said head member, guides arranged on said bridge and having openings therethrough, a rod arranged in said openings of said guides, frames arranged at the ends of said rod, said frames having arms, and flexible members adjustably arranged at the 'arms of said frames, said members passing around said pulleys for rotating the same.
5. In a device of the class described, a receptacle having a lid, churning means within said receptacle having members extending through the lid, pulleys on said members for operating the churning means, a bridge fixed on said lid and extending over the said members, guides extending upwardly from said bridge and provided with openings, a rod mounted to reciprocate in said guides, frames secured to the ends of said rod and flexible members passing around the said pulleys and connected with the said frames.
6. In a device of the class described, a receptacle having a removable lid, a sleevel extending through the lid and having a lateral extension secured to the top of the lid, a head having a tubular body mounted to turn in the sleeve and a cross bar within the receptacle, a dasher, means connected with the cross bar 'for carrying the dasher, a spindle mounted to turn in said tubular body,
and also carrying a dasher, the said spindle extending above the top of the tubular body and provided with a head at its outer end, pulleys carried at the outer ends of said spindle and said tubular body, a bridge secured to said lid `and extending over the head of the spindle and serving to limit the upward movement of the latter, guides carried by said bridge, a member mounted to reciprocate in said guides, and flexible connections between the said member and said pulleys for turning the pulleys when the member is reciprocated.
