ALBERT SPEIDEL, OF PFORZHEIM, GERMANY.
LINKED CHAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 25, 1908.
Application filed November 22, 1907. Serial No. 403,352.
To all whom it ma concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT S EIDEL, a subject of the German Ell'1P(-.1O1', i siding at Plorzheini, Baden, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Linked ha-in, oi ,which the following is e SPGOlllClllllb.
This invention relates to improvements in links for forming a. linked chain suitable for use as an elastic bracelet.
The improvml links are formed from bodies stamped out from sheet metal which areof Such shape. that they can be connected, together by bending and without the use of solder.
The annexed drawing illustrates the invention, in which Figure 1 is a side View of a. portion of a chain shown portly in section and in its con trscted stetel Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively n side and top View also partly in section of the some in its extended state. Fig. 4 is an elevation of one of the stampingrs before it is folded togetl'ier to form one of the links. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section thereof on line A i-*5 oi Fig. 4. on line (h of'Fig. 4' Fig. 7 is a plan view of the link formed by folding together the blank shown, in F ig. 4. Fig. 8 is an elevationof one of the stnmpings from which the other shnpeol link is formed before itis folded together to form said link- Figs. 9 and 10 are sections on lines 9-9 1010 of Fig. 8. Fig. 11 is a plan of the link formed 1 out of the, stamping shown in Fig. 8.
The. chain consists of links a of one form alternated with links I) of another form, each stamped out of a. single piece of sheet metal, which is shaped into the links by bending nnd hooked into or connected with one another.
As shown in Figs. 4 to 7 the preliminary lorm oithe link a stamped out of sheet metal essentially consists of ef1en1e-'a,with flanges (t in which are recesses 0 c and the form of the link shown in Figs 8 to 11 essentially consists of a. strip 6 carrying stamped out projections d formingwhen'feced together the pins or pivots adopted to engage in the apertures formed by therec'esses c c the said strip 6 also having flanges b b in which are Fig. 6 is a cross section recesses b b b 5* adapted when the strip 11 is folded together to form slots in which the end members 0 e of the frame a. will slide. By bending the frame and strip respectively upon a central line so as to bring the ends together, the links a and b are formed without soldering.
The parts 9 of the sheet metal blank of link a, are molded or pressed out to give ornamental shape to the link. The chamber formed at g in the link I) after the bending over of the strip 17 serves toreccive the helical spring As the individuel'links are connected one with the other by bending th strip 1) round the overlapping end members of the link (1:, the spring f abuts at one end of its helix against the members 6 and at the other end against the end of the link formed by the bend of the strip 1). The link b, is connected to the next adjacent link a. by
means of the pins formed by the projections d which engagein the aperture formed by the recesses 0 0 in said a-(l ecent link a. A suitable number of links a and 7) thus alternating with one another may be used to form .a strip 1) having laterally projecting memhers d and fien cs b b in which are recesses t b b I)", each link being bent together upon a medial line endkasscmbled by engaging the adjacent members e between the counterpart recesses 12 b and the counterpart mem hers din the counterpart recesses c c and c 0 together with springs interposed between the end members 6 a and the fold of the strips b for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof l have signed this.
specification in the prcsence'oi two witnesses.
ALBERT SPEIDEL.
