MAIL-BAG DELIVERING AND RECEIVING- APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

. for effectively delivering mail-bags from fast moving trains and to provide means whereby the bags may be received in a perfect condition.
Other objects and advantages will be aparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of a mail car showing the present delivering apparatus in a position to deliver to the present receiving apparatus, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the outer end of the delivering apparatus, Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the receiving apparatus, Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a railway car of ordinary construction provided with the usual doorways A, in the sides thereof.- A delivering a paratus 10 is carried by the car, and this do ivering apparatus consists of a vertically disposed bar 11 which is hinged to one side of the doorway as shown at 12 and 13 respectively. A diagonal bar 14 is connected at its lower end to the vertical bar 11, and this diagonal bar and the bar 11 are thus arranged to support a horizontally dis osed bar 15, as shown. The bar 15 isprovi ed at its outer end with a casting 16 consisting of horizontally extending spaced members 17 1 and 18 respectively which are connected at their ends by vertical members 19 and 20. The casting 16 is thus arranged to receive a horizontally extending shaft 21 provided with a crank 22 which is. dis osed between the members 17 and 18, an at the inner end this shaft has one end journaled in a passage 23 in the member 19, as shown. The end of the shaft outwardly of the casting 16 is bent to form a crank 24, for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The casting 16 is provided with a depending plate 25 which is forked, as shown at 26. The plate 25 is provided with pivoted dogs 27 and 28 respectively, and at the outer ends these dogs are provided with links 29 which are connected at their upper ends to the crank 22. The dogs 27 and 28 respectively are thus arranged to support a bail 30 carried by a mail-bag 31. p
A receiving apparatus 32 is located at one side of the car, and this receiving apparatus consists of a vertically extending standard 33 which is supported at its lower end upon a platform 34. The standard 33 is provided at its upper end with a horizontally disposed plate 35, and this plate is arranged. with portions extending at both sides of the standard 33, as shown. The plate 35 is provided with an outwardly extending bar 36, and at the outer end of this bar is provided with an upwardly extending trip arm 37. The bar 36 is removably mounted upon the plate 35 whereby the same may be shifted to either end of the plate in order that the trip arm will be in a position to receive mail in either direction of the car. A diagonal bar 38 is connected at its lower end to the standard 33, and at the upper end this bar is connected to the plate 35. The plate 35 outwardly of the standard 33 is provided with a depending bracket 38, and this bracket is provided at its lower end with a boxing 39. The platform 34 is rovided with a similar boxing 40, and these oxes are thus arranged to receive a vertically disposed shaft 41. The shaft 41 is provided with an outwardly extending arm 42, and this arm is arranged to support a mail receiving basket 43. The basket 43 is provided with a downwardly extending bar 44, and this bar is provided at its lower end with a roller 45, as shown. The roller 45 is thus arranged for movement upon an arcuate track 47, as shown. A latch member 48 is provided for holding the bar 44 in its operative position.
After the delivering apparatus carried by the car has been swung outwardly of the doorway, it will be seen that the crank 24 will be in a position to be struck by the trip arm 37 whereupon the crank 32 will be car ried in an upward direction to release the dogs 27 and 28 respectively from the bail 30 of the mail-bag 31 whereupon the bag will fall into the basket 43, and by means of the pivotal arrangement of this basket it will be seen that it will be moved one side of the car, as is obvious. traveled inwardly to the extent of its movement, this bar may be engaged by a latch member 49.
What is claimed is:
1. In a mail bag delivering apparatus the combination with a horizontally swinging bar, a revoluble shaft carried by said bar said shaft having a crank located inwardly of its outer end, said shaft having a second crank located at its outer end, a plurality of pivotally mounted dogs carried by said bar, connections between the dogs and the first named crank, of a receiving apparatus lo cated adjacent the car and comprising a horizontally movable basket, and a trip carried by the receiving apparatus for engagement with the crank outwardly of the shaft for releasing the dogs.
2. In a mail bag delivering apparatus the combination with a horizontally swinging bar, a revoluble shaft carried by said bar After the inclined bar has said shaft having a crank located inwardly of its outer end, said shaft having a second crank located at its outer end, a plurality of pivotally mounted dogs carried by said bar, connections between the dogs and the first named crank, of a receiving apparatus located at one side of the car and comprising a vertically disposed standard provided at its upper end with a horizontally disposed plate, a platform for the standard, a bracket located beneath the plate, a vertically disposed shaft journaled at its ends in the bracket and in the platform respectively, a bag receiving basket carried by the shaft normally disposed beneath the dogs and arran ed for movement at times at one side thereo' and a trip carried by the receiving apparatus for engagement with the crank at the outer end of the first named shaft, for releasing the dogs.
