Specification of Letters Patent.

' New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Musical Toys, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists ofa new and improved musical device or toy, designed to be lown by the mouth of the user, the same constructed and operated upon the principles hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, to which reference is made and which form a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a plan view of my new and improved musical toy. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation showing the front edge of the mouth piece.

In the drawings, 2 designates the tube or air chamber formed by preference of sheet metal, and in flaring or fan shape. To the narrower end of this tube or chamber is connected the mouth piece 3. This is formed-of the upper plate 4 in which there is a small hole or orifice 5, and the lower plate 6, in which is formed a corresponding small hole or orifice 7. The lower plate 6 is made in one piece with or attached to the lower plate 8 of the tube or chamber, and is by preference slanted downward as shown in the drawings. Between the upper plate 4 of the mouth piece and the upper plate of the tube or chamber 2 is left an opening 10, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The upper plate 4 and the lower plate 6 of the mouth piece are, by preference, made of sheet metal and oppositely arched or curved to form the space between them, through which the breath of the useris projected to produce sound or musical notes by the instrument, and in the mouth piece is secured a reed 12, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, having an orifice 9 located between the orifices 5 and 7.

The mouth-piece formed of the upper and lower plates is open through from end to end for the passage of the breath, the said opening through the mouth-piece to be controlled by the user. In this way the musical tone produced can be modulated and easily controlled, for the reason that the user has full power over the use of the tongue and mouth in directing and controlling the breath as it passes through the instrument, much the same as when whistling with the mouth and lips alone. The tube or chamber is for-magnifying the sound and carrying it out in greater volume.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A musical instrument comprising a mouth-piece open from end to end, and formed of upper and lower plates, each provided with a small hole or orifice, substantially as described.

2. A musical instrument comprising a mouth-piece open from end to end, and formed of upper and lower plates, each provided with a small hole or orifice, and a horn or chamber, to which said mouth-piece is attached, substantially as described.

3. A musical instrument comprising a mouth-piece open from end to end and formed of upper and lower plates, each provided with a small hole or orifice, said mouthpiece being provided with a reed across the center of the air passage thereof, substantially as described. I

4. A musical instrument comprising a mouth-piece open from end to end and formed of upper and lower plates, each provided with a small hole or orificesaid mouth-piece being provided with a reed across the center of the air passage thereof, and located adjacent to the inlet end of the said air passage, substantially as described.

5. A musica instrument having a mouth piece composed of upper and lower plates spaced from each other to form an open pas sage between them, each plate having a small hole or orifice formed therein, in combination with a reed held in the passage between said plates, said reed having a small hole or orifice formed therein, substantially as described.

6. A musical instrument having a mouth piece composed of upper and lower plates spaced from each other to form an open passage between them, each plate having a small hole or orifice formed therein, in combination with a reed held in the space between said plates, said reed having a small hole or orifice formed therein, and registering with the orifices formed in the said upper and lower plates, substantially as described.

7. A musical instrument comprising a mouth-piece composed of u per and lower plates spaced from each otfier to form an open passage between them, each plate having a small hole or orifice formed therein, and
