Be it known that I, EDWARD T. DUMAS, a citizen of the United States, residin at T0- ledo, in the county of Lucas and tate of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Crossings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved railway crossing, in which continuous rails are provided for trains on two intersecting tracks, and provided with means whereby the crossing rails may be simultaneously set or adjusted for a train on either track.
My invention consists in the construction, combination andarrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawing is a top plan view of a railway crossing embodying my invention.
The crossing rails cl, 6 are each integral and immovable. The ends of the said crossing rails are secured on plates 20. The operating rails 21, 22, which respectively aline with the track rails 1 and crossing rails e, and the track rails 2 and crossing rails d, are movable longitudinally and are guided by chairs 23, 24 respectively. The outer ends of said operating rails are beveled on their outer sides as at 25, and are somewhat widened on their inner sides as at 26. The opposing ends of the track rails 1, 2, are bent outwardly, to provide them with beveled inner faces 27 which correspond with the beveled ends of the operating rails and on which the said beveled ends of the said operating rails slide. When the rails 21 are moved inwardly or towards one another so that they abut against the ends of the fixed crossing rails c, the track 1 is open and continuous across the crossing. When the rails 21 are in such position, the rails 22 will be in the reverse position, spaced from the crossing rails d, to clear the flanges of the wheels of the train on track 1. To set the operating rails, connections are employed which may be operated by the levers usually employed for such purposes, or by any suitable motor or motors. Such connections are here shown as including bellcranks 28, link rods 29, lever bars 30, and links 31.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined by the appended claims,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. In a railway crossing, the combination of fixed crossing rails, spaced apart at their converging ends, fixed track rails spaced from the crossing rails and having the ends nearest said crossing rails laterally beveled, longitudinally movable rails in the s aces between and respectively in line witi the respective crossing and track rails and having beveled ends to overlap and engage the beveled ends of the fixed track rails, and means to operate said longitudinally-movable rails.
2. In a railway crossing, the combination of fixed crossing rails spaced apart at their converging ends, fixed track rails spaced from the crossing rails and havin the ends nearest said crossing rails laterafiy beveled, longitudinally-movable rails in the spaces between and respectively in line with the respective crossing and track rails and having beveled ends to overlap and engage the beveled ends of the fixed track rails, and means to simultaneously move the movable rails of the respective tracks in opposite directions, for the purpose set forth.
3. In a railway crossing, the combination longitudinally movable to connect the crossing rails with their respective track rails, or dlsconnect them, and means for simultaneously moving said connecting rail sections so that one set is in connecting position with respect to one pair of crossing rails while the other set is in disconnecting position with respect to the other set of crossing rails.
5. In arailway crossing, the combination of fixed crossing rails having their adjacent ends spaced apart, with fixed track rails alined with said crossing rails but spaced away from the same; two pairs of slidable rail sections for each pair of crossing rails, and means for moving the pairs of rail sections associated with one pair of crossing sections to connect said crossin section with its track sections and for simu itaneously moving the pairs of rail sections associated with the other pair of crossing rails in opposite directions to disconnect said crossing rails from the track rails.
