T o all whom it may concern:
l Be it known that I, AUSTIN PAoros, a subject of the King of Spain, and resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Equipment, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to certain improvements in railway equipment and coinprehends more particularly novel means for preventing the derailment of cars and other rolling stock, said means being devised to attain the urpose stated in a simple, durable and highlly expeditious manner.
There are other features connected with the invention which in addition to those alluded to, are clearly set forth in the subsequent detailed description.
In the accom anying drawing forming part of this specl 'oation,-Figure l is a perspective view illustrating` a railway crossing equipped in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2, is a part sectional view of rail provision, a car wheel and portion of an axle together with certain other features forming part of my invention, the plane of section being that indicated by the broken line 2 2 of Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3, is a view at right angles to that illustrated in Fig. 2, and only showing a portion of the guard rail and special device to be secured to the truck.
Parallel with and at the inner side of the standard railway rail A, is a guard rail B, consisting of a laterally extending base flange l) and shorter overhanging flange b, thelatter being disposed in a somewhat higher plane but in juxtaposition to the tread A of the main rail.
Bolted or otherwise secured to the car truck, is a horizontally extended steel plate C, integrally provided at its lower end with the inwardly extending offset ,0, from which integrally depend housings C, C', these latter' presenting perforated bottoms and open tops. The said bottom openings are of rectangular configuration to accommodate the similarly shaped portions d of shanks D, which play through said openings and are normally maintained in a definite elevated position through the medium of strong thrust springs .abutting respectively against the housing bottoms and against the under side of a jam nut arrangement on the upper threaded end of each shank. From the description thus far, it will be appreciated that the wheels of a truck will be positively coniined to and held on the regulation tracks irrespective of the degree of speed or other conditions. The improved antiderailing means can be readily adapted to meet varying track conditions. Fig. l, represents an adaptation of the invention for any ordinary right angle crossing. It will be noted that the ends B of the upper flange of the guard-rail extend somewhat beyond the vertical portion of said rails and are upwardly curved in proximity to the track that is crossed. It is obvious that with the spring adjusted properly when the Shanks and rollers are to cross the rails at right angles, said rollers will rise under the action of the springs and at the appropriate time will be at such elevation as to clear the right angle rails and will again be engaged by the curved portions of the guard-rails at the opposite side of the track. It will be comprehended that the improvements are of such simple nature that they Vcan be readily applied to existing railway equipment.
The roller or rollers need not be constantly in contact with the 'under surface of the overhanging flange of the guard-rail, since the spring can be so adjusted that such contact will only occur when conditions tending to derailment arise. As a matter of fact, the spring can be dispensed with and the roller or rollers so located as to normally move beneath and out of contact with the overhanging flange and subserve the purposes of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
l. The combination with the main track of a railway, of an inner guard-rail having an overhanging lateral fiange, and a laterally disposed spring yielding roller secured to the truck or other rolling stock and engaged beneath said flange.
2. The combination with a railway crossing, of guard-rails disposed at the inner sides of the tracks and embodying laterally projecting flanges with upwardly curved terminal portions, and a spring elevated roller secured to the truck or other rolling stock andl adapted to engage beneath the langes of said guard-rails.
3. The Combination with a main rail, of an inner guard-rail having an overhanging flange, a plate for seeurement to the truck or other rolling stock and integrally providing housings, the bottoms of which Contain angular perforations, Shanks having similarly shaped portions playing in said perforations and carrying rollers ada ted to engage beneath the overhanging. ange of the guardrail, and an adjustably confined thrust spring Within eaoh housing and normally tending to maintain its shank in an elevated position.
4. The combination with the main track l5 of a railway, ofan inner guard rail having an overhanging lateral flange and upwardly curved terminal portions, and a roller secured to the truok or other rolling stock and adapted to engage beneath the liange of said 20 guard rail.
