JACOB SILVERBERG, OF PITT S BURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SIPHON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 6, 1905. Serial No. 239,849.
Patented Aug. 11, 1908.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAooB SILVERBERG, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Siphons and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to si hons, and has special reference to the or inary form of portable siphons for'emptying the contents of barrels, casks, etc.
The ob'ect of my invention is to provide a cheap an simple form of siphon whereby the contents of a barrel or'cask may be easily and quickly removed therefrom intermittently or continuously, as desired, in the fillingof bottles, ars, &c., or for other purpose.
I will now describe my invention, referring to the accom anying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 s IOWS a cross-section of a barrel having my improved siphon applied thereto and in position for 0 crating in filling a bottle.- Fig. 2 is an en ar ed side view of the receiving end with the owerfportion in section. Fig. 3 is a like viewo the adjusting sleeve for the siphon tube. Fig. 4 isa top plan view of the same, partly in section.
i 5 isa longitudinal section of theexhaust cy inder with its operating parts connected thereto. Figs. 6 and 7 are views showing different connections for filling diiferent sizes of vessels. Fig. 8 is a view of a nipple for use in filling dilferent sized necks of vessels.
Like symbols of reference indicate like parts in each figure.
In the drawing, 1 represents the ordinary. fiexible siphon-tube, the usual short leg 1 of which is adapted to be passed through the bung hole-of the barrel A and carries a strainer-sinker 2 which is provided with a notched nipple 2 at its u per end'for connecting it to said leg 1. he strainer-sinker 2 is exteriorly of a size to permit its passage through the bun -hole a and is provided with a threaded annu ar flange 2" at its lower end with which a threaded annular flange 3 on a sleeve 3 is ada ted to engage for confining a strainer 4 and washer 5. Extending from the sleeve 3 is a series of projections or lugs 6 affording passageways between them for use when the sinkeris resting on the bottom of the barrel. The si hon-tube 1 is also provided with the usua long le or delivery portion 1, while between the e s 1 and 1 is an adjusting sleeve 7, which ts around the tube 1 and is formed of a curved portion 7 and a straight portion 7. The curved portion 7 carries at its end the le 1 and extends through the bung-hole o the barrel, while thumb-screws 8 engage by their threaded ends 8 with threaded bushings 8 on each side of the sleeve 7, the thumb-screws resting against the exterior surface of the barrel.
At the delivery end of the si hon tube 1-, is the exhaust cylinder 10, whic is connected to the tube by means of an elbow 11 brazed to a boss 11 on one side of the cylinder. A stop-cock 12 having a valve 12 is brazed to the opposite side of the cylinder, and the openings 13 and 13 leading into the boss 11 and cook 12 are in the shape of perforations to form strainers. The piston 14 of the cylinder 10 is preferably formed of leather and is connected to a'piston-rod 15 provided with an operating handle 14 at its outer end. g
The operation of my improved si hon is as folloWs:When it is desired to fil a vessel, such as thebottle B, the adjusting sleeve 7 is moved along the siphon tube 1 to such position that the sinker 2, when the leg 1 is passed into the barrel, will be but slightly re has been emptied. As the contents of the barrel are gradually lowered, the sinker can be kept always sufiiciently immersed therein by simply sliding the adjusting sleeve back along t lengthen the leg 1.
In case it is desired to fill two bottles at one time, all that is necessary is to screw the plug 16, shown in Figs. 6 and 7, on to the threaded end 12" of the cook 12, and then, by screwing interchangeable and difierent sized branch pipes 16 into said plug, different-sizes of bottles can be filled at one time, while it will also be evident that for filling narrow neck bottles, a notched screw plug 17, such as shown in Fig. 8, can be screwed on to the end 12".
It will also be evident that the thumbe tube 1 the desired distance so as to screws 8 may be screwed up so that the ends cylinder by said second strainer, and a solid thereof will sli htly engage the siphon tube piston in said cylinder for starting the siphon 1 in order to ho d said tube against any tendin operation, substantially as described. ency to slide in said sleeve. In testimony whereof, I the said JACOB 5 clai n1:h 1 d h d SILVERBERG- have hereunto set my hand.
