HEATING-DRUM.

Be it known that I, ASA BENJAMIN FUL- LERTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Letts, in the county of Louisa and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Heating-Drum, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the present invention is to im rove the construction of heating drums,
. an to provide an exceedingly sim le and inexpensive heating drum, a apte to be readily installed either in the room containing the stove to which it is to be connected, or in an overhead apartment, and capable of securing an increased radiation of heat and thereby economizing the fuel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a heating drum of this character, capable of securing a positive circulation of air through it and of taking the cold air from the floor and of discharging the same in a heated condition.
Another object of the invention is to provide a heating drum adapted to afford a direct draft from the stove to the chimney when desired, and capable also of permitting any soot collecting in it to be readily removed without disconnecting the drum from the stove.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing :'Figure 1 is a side elevation of a heating drum, constructed in accordance with this invention and shown connected with a stove. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the heating drum. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3, 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view, taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2.

The heating drum comprises an'inner ver tical pipe 1,which,when the drum is applied directly to a stove 2, is arranged adjacent to the Specification of Letters Patent.

back of the stove in spaced relation to the same, but the heating drum may be arranged in a room over the room or apartment containing the stove, as will be readily understood. The inner or front vertical pipe 1 extends to a point above the top of the stove, and it is connected with the upper ortion thereof by a stove pipe 3 for causing t e smoke or other products of combustion of the stove to pass through the heating drum. The lower end of the inner or front pipe 1 is connected by a short horizontal connection or pipe 4 with the lower end of an outer or rear vertical pipe 5, extending upward from the short lower pipe connection 4 and connected with the upper end of the inner or front pipe 1 by a short horizontal pipe connection '6. The outer or rear vertical pipe 5 is also provided with a vertical extension 7, extending upward from the pipe connection 6 and terminating at the upper end in a horizontal arm or portion 8, which is fitted in a stove pipe hole 9 of a flue or chimney 10, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The lower and upper pipe connections 4 and 6 may be of any preferred construction, and the outer or rear vertical pipe 5, which is spaced from the inner or front vertical pipe 1, is provided at the outer end of the pipe connection 4 with an outlet 11 for the removal of any soot collecting in the heating drum, a suitable closure 12' being provided for normally closing the outlet.
The smoke and other products of combustion escaping from the stove through the stove pipe 3 enters the heating drum at the upper end of the inner or front vertical pipe 1, and by means of a damper 13 may be caused to pass down the front or inner vertical pipe 1 and through the lower pipe connection 4 to the lower end of the rear or outer vertical pipe 5, and thence upward through the same to the chimney, or the damper may be turned to the position illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawing to permit the products of combustion to pass directly through the upper pipe connection to the extension 7 to the rear or outer pipe 5. This provides a straight draft, which may be desirable when starting the fire, or for causing the same to burn more freely. The smoke and other products of combustion heat the pipes of the heating drum, and thereby cause an increased radiation of heat. The heating drum is also equipped with front and rear vertical air pipes 14 and 15, extending through the pipes 1 and 5 and dependin from the bottom of the heating drum an terminating close to the floor. The depending portions 16 and 17 of the pipes 14 and 15 have flared lower ends, and when the pipes 14 and 15 become heated, an upward draft through them will be created which will produce a suction at their lower ends, whereby cold air will be taken from the floor and heated and discharged at the top of the heating drum. The air pipe 14 pierces the upper pipe connection 6 and is open at its upper end, and the upper end of the other air pipe 15 pierces the extension ,7 at the elbow or connection between the arm 8 and the vertical portion of the extension.
The front or outer portion of the heating drum is provided with a check damper 18 for affording increased controlof the fire of the stove. The check damper, which may be of any desired construction, is designed to operate in the usual manner toretard the consumption of the fuel.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z- The combination with a stove pipe, of a heating drum comprising a front vertical pipe connected at its upper end with the stove to receive the smoke and other produots of combustion therefrom, a rear vertical pipe spaced from the front vertical pi e and connected at the, lower end with the lower "end ofthe front vertical pipe and provided at its lower end with an outlet communicating with both of the vertical pipes for the removal of soot and having a closure, said rear pipe being also connected with the upper end of the front vertical pipe and provided with a vertical extension having terminal means for connecting it with a chimney or flue, a damper interposed between the upper ends of the front vertical pipe and the rear vertical pipe to afford a direct draft or to cause the products of combustion to pass through the pipes of the heating drum,- and I air pipes extending through the front and rear pipes of the drum and through the vertical extension and open at their upper ends and having depending lower portions for taking the cold air from the floor.
