Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved .Yoodworking-Machine, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention contemplates an improved wood working machine for turning irregular or non-circular forms, the machine being more especially designed for shaping the eye ortion of ax and other handles, although it 1s not limited to this particular operation as it may be used with advantage in the shaping of other articles, as will be apparent when the construction of the machine is fully understood.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine complete, with an ax handle in position preparatory to the sha )ing of the eye portion thereof; Fig. 2 is a plan of the machine; Fig. 3 is a right end elevation; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view showing one position of the former; Fig. 5 is a similar sec tion showing the former in a different posi-.

The machine embodies in its construction a suitable frame comprising sup orts 10, 10, carrying a table 1 1, the latter being provided with bearings 12 on its upy :-r face, in which is journaled a. spindle 13, naving a. driving pulley 14, keyed 0r ctheruise secured thereto intermediate the bearings, and also having at the outside of one of said bearings near the forward end of the machine, a cutter-head 15, carrying a series of ad ustable cutting blades '16.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters j Patent:

The combination of a frame carrying a revoluble cutter, a sleeve journaled 1n the frame having work-holding means at opposite ends for supporting the work ad'acent to the cutter, means passing through the sleeve for varying the distance between the workholding means, and means for sliding and oscillating said sleeve.
3. The combination of a frame carrying a revoluble cutter, a sleeve journaled in the frame, having work-holding means for suporting the work adjacent to the cutter, a liand-lever for oscillating and sliding said sleeve, and means including a rod passing through said sleeve, for advancing and retracting one of said centers.
4. The combination of a frame provided with a rotary cutter, a sleeve slidably and oscillatively mounted in the frame, having standards rigid therewith, centers carried by saii standards, means for revolving one. of said centers, and means for advancing and retracting the other of said centers, including a rod passing through said sleeve.
5. The combination of a frame provided with a revoluble cutter. a carriage slidably and swingingly mounted at one side of said cutter, having centers for supporting the work, a hand-lever for swinging and sliding the carriage, and a foot-lever for advancing and retracting one of said centers.
6. The combination of a frame provided with cutting means, a sleeve journaled' in the frame, having standards rigid therewith, centers carried by said standards for supporting the work adjacent to said cutting means, a foot-lever fulcrumed to one of said standards, a rod connected with the foot-lever and passing through said sleeve, and a lever fulcrumed to the other of said standards and connected with said rod and to one of said centers.
7. The combination of a frame provided.
with a cutter, a carriage slidingl and swingingly mounted at one side of sait frame, having centers for supporting the work adjacent to said cutter, a hand lever for sliding and swinging the carriage, and a foot lever operable to advance and retract one of said centers.
