CHECK DELIVERING, REGISTERING, AND ALARM DEVICE- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA \V JONES, of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Check Dcliver ing, Registering, and Alarm Devices and I I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to ap liances for carrying into effect a system 0 street railway fare collection whereby eculat-ions of dishonest employees or fare co lectors will be prevented by making the detection of such eculations more certain and in which it will 0 to the interest and profit of the passenger to see that the proper registration of the collected fare is made by the conductor or collector.
In the s 'stem wherein the appliances of the presentinvention are employed the conductor is required to withdraw from a registering mechanism having an alarm, a check which is presented to each passenger paying a fare, such checks having a redemption value sufficient to make it to the interest of the passengers to see that a check is registered and given him, each time a fare is paid, thus the usual lack of interest on the part of the passenger as to whether or not the fare is registered is overcome and to this extent the cooperation of the passenger is obtained to see that the company is not defrauded.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of acheck holder, registor and alarm constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical section with some of the internal parts in elevation. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation showing the alarm mechanism. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section. Fig. 7 is a tree view of one of the checks on an enlarged scale. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a package of checks.

In its preferred form, the check holder and register embodies a cylindrical check chamber A. and a second chamber A, preferably parallel therewith and adapted to contain the alarm and registering mechanisms. of relatively small dimensions well adapted to be secured to the belt or clothing of the conductor. For convenience in securing the same in position it is preferably provided with parallel spring pins B, such pins being formed as continuations of a wire 15', extending around and secured to the upper edge of the chambers: Guards C are provided for the lower ends or points of the pins, such guards usually being formed by end extensions of a metal strap 0, secured to the base of the chambers. Inasmuch as dilliculty might be experienced in maii-ttaining the aralleiism of the )ins as the Y are assed into P 1h 3 P the garments, a s ide D is mounted on said pins and is adaptcd to be drawn down close to the points where they are to be ntered for positioning them. As the pins enter the garment the slide is pushed up by contact with the garment and finally forms a stop for preventing the further entry of the pins.

The alarm mechanism consists o a bell F )referably secured in the chamber A, and a hammer F for striking the bell when operated by the check discharging mechanism. The hammer or clapper F is preferably mounted on a spring arm F usually fastened rigidly to the wall of the check chamber An operating lever G pivoted at g PIOJOCtS at the lower end in positron to enter a slot or opening q in the finger piece whereby the lever will be oscillated each time the finger piece is moved to discharge a check. The upper end of the lever is bent at G to hook around the soring arm, draw the same back and allow it to escape as the finger piece makes its forward movement to ring the bell,
but said hooked end of the lever pushes the to approach s'rrfliciently to pass through the spring arm aside on the return stroke without sounding the alarm.
The registering mechanism indicated by the letter H may be of any preferred character although small counters, such as are now in common use, are well adapted for the purpose. The count-im or registering mechanism is arranged with the axis of the indicating wheels vertical or parallel with the check chamber and where it embodies only a single set of wheels as illustrated it may be arranged entirely within the chamber A, an aperture It being formed at one side through which the numbers on the register wheels may be read.
For operatim the registering mechanism its shaft H which projects at the lower end of the chamber is )rovidcd with a short fixed crank arm I and the latter is connected by a link I with the finger piece of the check discharging mechanism, whereby each operation of the check discharging mechanism will advance the registering mechanism one number to show that a check has been delivered.
The check chamber is preferably closed at the top by an upwardly opening hinged cover K, adapted to be held in either closed or open osit-ion by a spring is and having clips or cars i on the inner side for retaining arecord blank on which the conductor will write arccord for use in auditing his account.
The cover and record blank are preferably centrally perforated for the )assage of a cord M one end of which is detac iably held, as by a snap ring at outside of the cover and the other end of which carries a check weight or follower N adapted to perform the dual function of holding the checks down and of locking the finger )iece against movement when the last check has been discharged. For the latter pur )ose the weight is made too large to pass through the discharge slot of the check chamber and conscc uently when it reaches the bottom the discharge projection on the finger piece will engage therewith and be held against further movement. Openings O O are formed in the chamber A A, the former to permit inspection of the checks for the detection of any cocking or dislacement of the checks such as would interi ere with their discharge, and the latter to permit free egress of the sound from the alarm.
The check chamber is preferably made of a diameter only a little greater than that of the checks themselves and in order to readily fill the chamber with a given number of checks,-
the checks are packaged in bundles of the desired number y threading them on a wire holder P, Fig. 8, having a furcated end atp the arms of which may be spread apart to retain the checks. These packages of checks may be slipped into the check chamber and the holder forcibly withdrawn, the withdrawal movement causing the spread ends 1) central apertures in. the checks.
In use the conductor is required to give each passenger one of the redeemable checks when collecting fare the alarm indicating that the same has been withdrawn from the Failure to take a holder and registered. check from the registering device will be at once noted by the passenger and as it is intended that the check register must tally with the usual fare register there is little chance of a conductor knocking down without being detected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a. check delivering and registering device the combination with the check cham her, having a transverse discharge opening at the bottom, and a finger piece and check discharger pivoted .0 the bottom of said chamber, of a registering mechanism mounted at one side of the check chamber and having its operating shaft projecting downwardly and operating connections between said shaft and said finger piece and check discharger; substantially as described.
2. In a check delivering and registering device, the combination with the check chamber having a transverse discharge opening at the bottom and a )ivotcd finger iccc and check discharge below said chamber, of a registering mechanism embodying counting wheels having an operating shaft arranged parallel with the check chamber, a crank arm on said shaft and an operating connection between said crank arm and finger piece and check discharge'r; substantially as described.
3. In a check delivering and registering device,thc combination with the check cham-- her having a transverse discharge opening at the bottom and a finger piece and discharger )ivotally mounted on the under side of the bottom to move parallel therewith, of a registering mechanism having registering wheels mounted on an axis parallel with the check chamber and an operating shaft projecting below said wheels, a crank arrn on the operating shaft and a link connecting said arm and finger piece; substantially as described.
4. In a check delivering and registering device and alarm, the combination with the parallel connected chambers one having a transverse discharge opening at the bottom and adapted for the reception of superposed checks, and a finger piece and chtck discharger nivotally mounted on ti .0 bottom of the chec chamber, of an alarm mechanism and a registering mechanism lot-aizd in the second chamber and one above the other and operating connections between tre linger piece and alarm and registering mechanisms substantially as described.
5. In a check delivering device, the combith n as,
having a transverse discharge opening at the bottom, of a flat finger piece substantially conforming to the shape of the bottom oLtQ chamber, pivoted eccentrically to said bottom and having a check ejecting projection extending upwardl into the chamber; substantially as dcscri ed.

In a check delivering device, the combination with the cylindrical cheek chamber having a transverse discharge opening at the bottom and means whereby checks may be withdrawn in succession through said open ing, of a cover hinged at one side of the top of the chamber to swing upwardly and a record sheet holder on the inner side of said top; substantiall as described.
7. In a check delivering device the combi nation with the cylindrical check chamber having a transverse discharge opening at the bottom and means whereby checks may be weight in the receptacle and a flexible con- TeCtion for the weight passing through the opening in the cover; substantially as described.
8.
