Be it known that I,- ELLWOOD E. Hor- KINS, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania,

1 have invented certain new and useful 1111- prove'ments in a Combined Pencil Holder and Sharpener, whereof thefollowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in compound implements used mainly in preparing and protecting the points of pen cils and its ObjQCiS are: First, to provide an implementadapted to be retained at all times in connection with a pencil, as when not in use on the pencil point it may be disposed on the other'end. Second, to provide an implement including an integral shar ening means, effective in reducing the woo surrounding the lead core in ordinary pencils and combinedwith means whereby the chips and fragments removed are retained and prevented from soiling either the person or premises.- Third, to provide an implement, comprising an eraser, an

In the modification shown in Fig. VI, is indicated a form ofi'sliarpener having aknife 15, inserted in a rentrantly turned portion 16, of the sharpener 2,; said blade being held securely but solelv by; the clamp frictionof the contacting si es andreadily removable when desired. The absence of all screzvs, solder or other holdin ,means is evident from inspection, the blades beig merely slip ed into position, the sharpenem bei made in both cases from drawn sheet stee and formed -from a single pieceby the use of suitably constructed dies and zproper power pres'ses.

' Referring to the manicure features of the implement, the sharply cut recess 11, transverse of the sharpener and formed close to the sleeve 7, when the same is positioned on the sharpener, provides a cutter for trim-s ming the nails, which can be used with perfect safety, no danger from inadvertent cuts being possible, while an efi'ective trimming device is attained, leaving the nails in a smooth and satisfactory condition; not only I can any preferred shape be obtained but the edges .of the nails are rounded and smoothed in a manner not possible to attain. vvith a knife. 4

Having thus described my invention, what 1 I claim as new and desire to secure by Leti ters Patent of the United States, is:-

1. In a combined pencil holder and sharpener, the combination of a sleeve; a cutter formed of a split tube having a slotvvay and 1 frictio'n'ally retained in said sleeve; and a projection on said sleeve entering the slotvvay of a said split tube to prevent relative rotation of said tube and sleeve.

' 2. In a combined pencil holder and sharpsaid tube and sleeve; and an eraser holder] frictionally secured to the exterior of said cutter and forminga chip retaining recept'acle.

3. In an instrument of the class described the combination of a sleeve; a cutterformed of a split tube which is conical at amend and provided with an integral pro'ection at its apex, the outer surface of sai conical portion being provided with transverse cuts forming a file, said cutter being frictionally retained in said sleeve.

6. In an instrument of the class described, the combination with a sleeve; of a removable cutter formed of a tube which is conical at one end, split throughout its entire length and frictionally and detach'ably retained in said slecve;said tube being provided with an aperture having its periphery a cutting edge.
