Description

CARL J. HEHRMANX, oF iiRooKLYS. New Yoiiic` 'UNITED sri-iras 'PATENT oFF PORTABLE PIE-CRATE.
To all lwhom -it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CARL J. Hsiiiuisxx, a
citizen of the United Sta-tes, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings :ind State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Pie(`r:ites, of which theV following is a s iecitication, such as will enable those skilled .in the art to which it appertaiiis to make and use the saine. v
T his invention relates to crates and similar devices for use by bakers in packing and carrying pies for delivery to customers: and the object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this class, and which also may be used for packing and delivering other articles of foo'd placed on plates or pans; a further object being to provide a. crate of the class specified into which plates or pans may be. conveniently inserted and securely held iwaiiist movement and easily and convenie'iitfv removed from the crate whenever desired. i
The invention is an improvement on that described and claimed in United States Letters Patent, granted to Ame Sept. 24. 1907,
"$866,860, and is fully disclosed `in the followingr specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which taie separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the. views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of in v improved crate, part of the construction being in section, Fig. 2 a section on the line 2, 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 a perspective view of :i detail of the construction, aiid;-I `if. 4 a plan -view of :i modified forni of ano-t ier detail of the construction shown in Fig. 1.
In thel practice of myinvention I provide :i plurality of uprights or posts, wiiich are preferably three in iiuinbei' and which are designated in the drawing by the reference characters (if, a? and a3, and these nprights or iosts nare placed in the form of a semicii'c e, and connected therewith are a. plurality of semi-circular supports b which constitute semi-circular shelves.
In the construction shown in Fics l and 2,
the supports b are composed ol' a strong wire or rod bent into semi-circular forniand are connected with the uprights or posts a, a? Vand a3 by means' of radially and inwardly directed arms or brackets c thioiigh which they are passed, but this connection of the,
Patented Aug. 4, 1908.
supports b with the uprights or posts a. a? and a3 may be made in any-desired iiisiiiier, all that is necessary in this connection being ics.
that said supports beset inwardly :i prede;
tei-mined distance from said npriglits or posts, and in practice the said supports are ireferably inclined slightly downwardly and )ackwai'dly as clearly indicated in Pig. I also provide a supplemental upright or post a* which is connected .with the upright or post a, and Aby means of tubes d and which is placed directly in front of the saidnpriglit or post a, and in the outer or'tront ends of the tubes d, two of which are shown. het any desired number of which may be einpioyed.-
are placed spring operated plugs e between which, and tue. inner ends o the tubes d are. placed strong spiral springs I aiso provide a locking device g consisting, in .the form of construction shown, of en upright plate or bar g2 having laterally directed arms g3 provided with heads g which are approximately .circular in form, and the heads g, in the forni of construction shown, are provided with ratchet teeth g" forming corresponding recesses g.
The tubes d proiect through the upright or post a* and are provided with jaws J1 between which tlic heads gt of the arms g are pivoter] as clearly shown at 7i in Fig. l, and the upright plate or bar y2 of the locking dcvice g is provided transversely of 'its inner face. with spaced teeth or projections g1 forming corresponding recesses g8.
The outer end of the spring operating plugs e is V-sliaped in forni and adapted to enter the recesses g* in the heads g*l of the arms gs of the locking device g, and said plugs are designedto hold the locking device in closed and operative positionas shown in iill lines in Fig. 1, or in different open positions as indicat ed in dotted lines in said figure- In practice plates oi' pans i', indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2 are inserted into the crate and rest on the sides b, and when in position in the crate said plates oipsns prolect fonvardly of the upriglits or posts a, a.z and a3, as is also clearly shown in Figsl and 2, and when said plates or pans have been placed in position in the crate, the locking device q is swung into the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2 and the from edges of the plates or pans a enter the recesses gs and said plates or ans are fully supported and also locked in t e crate until the locking I wpans i may be removed from the crate..
. ing a plurality of upriglits laced in a seinicircular position, and two o device is swung outwardly as indicated l dotted l lines in Fig. 1', after which the plates 1 In Fig. 4 I have shown at I)2 a in'oditied form of the supports b which constitute the semi-circular shelves, .and on which the plates or pans are placed, and which consists of a seiiii-circular plate, the inner edge of' l whichis'inclined downwardly, and said plate is riveted to bracket arnis c3 which may be sevcured to the uprights or posts a., u? and a3 in any desired manner.-
My invention is not limited to the exact forni of lockingr device g shown iii the drawi ing, and itl will be seen that Ithis Ylocking device constitutes a forni of door which partially closes the front of the crate and any i construction of a device of the saniegeneral forni that will operate in a siniilar manner 5 may be employed. My invention is also not limited to the teeth g5 on the heads g* of the g arins g3 of the locking device, and the corresponding recesses g, nor to pi'oviding the g,
-brackets'e with V-shaped ends, as various other fornis of construction may be employed for holding the locking device-g in different positions. f
Having fully described my invent-ion, what I claini as new and desire to secure by Letteis Patent, is;-
