, M It is apparent that I have provided a very strong and hi hly efficient apparatus of the class described, which is easy and simple of operation and is cafpable of adjustment for a very large range 0 sizes of work, as the extension-rings 20may be made in different sizes to suit the different lengths of chasers shown and described a articular construction and arrangement of the parts of my invention, I do not desire to be restricted to such construction or arrangement, as obvious modifications will occur to persons skilled in the art.
Having thus described my invent on, what I claim as new and'desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is,
1. In combination, an axially socketed head, tapping dies radially movable therein, means mounted for axial movement within the head socket and adapted when moved inwardly therein to permlt a retraction of the dies, means influencing an outward movement of said first means, and rotary means carried by the head and acting on the dies independently of said first means to effect a positive radial movement to the dies when the head and said rotary means are relatively turned.
2. In combination, an axially socketed inner ends of the dies to head, tap ing, dies radially movable therein, a plug yie dingly mounted in said socket and having a tapered portion coacting with the ermit them to gradually retract when the p ug is moved inwardly, and a sleeve rotatably carried by the head and acting on the dies inde endently of the plug to cause an outwar movement thereof when the sleeve is rotated in one direction relative to the head.
3. In combination, an axially socketed head, chasers mountedfor radial movement in said head, a plug movable in said socket and having tapered longitudinally extending chaser-coacting surfaces whereby a relative movement of the plug and head in one direction ermits an inward radial movement of the ciasers, a sleeve journaled on the head and having cam-recesses in one end, pins projecting laterally from the chasers and -working in said recesses whereby a rotary movement of the sleeve effects a ositive radial movement of the chasers, an means for influencing an outward movement of the ln f p 4% In combination, a head having radial chaser-ways therein and formed with a contracted'axial extension forming a stem, said head and its stem being axially socketed, a
plug yieldingly mounted in said socket and provided longitudinallywith tapered chaserengaging surfaces, chasers mounted for radial movement in said ways and having lateral projections, a sleeve journaled on the contracted portion of the head and having an end abutting against the shoulder formed by the head proper, said sleeve end having camrecesses for receiving the chaser projections, and a sto -screw threaded in the outer end of the lug or contact with an 'alining object to hold the lug stationary to permit the head to move own thereon.
5, The combination with a tap inghead having a peripheral shoulder, and t 1e chasers carried by the head, of an. extension-ring removably encompassing the head and having an inner recess for receiving the shoulder and radial grooves for receiving the projected chaser-ends, the shoulder and chasers acting in opposition on the ring to retain it in position on the head.
6.- The combination with a tapping-head, and radial tapping dies carried thereby, of an extension ring removabl encompassing the head and combining with. the head to brace the ends ofthe dies which project beyond the head.
