APPLICATION FILED AUG.5, 1907.
l WJTNESSES:
I UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEicE.
HJALMAR OHRISTENSEN, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
SIGN.
Application filed August 5, 1907.
To all 'whom it may concern. Y
Be it known that I, HJALMAR OHRisTEN- SEN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has special reference to illuminated signs and 1 have for the object thereof to simplify and improve devices of this type.
The invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth and defined in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a single letter constructed in accordance with my invention.' Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken transversely of the stem portion of the letter. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the letter frameshown in perspective with the backing removed, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the backing removed and shown in broken section.
ln the embodiment of my invention l provide a frame as 1 conforming to the outline of the desired letter or symbol and formed of suitable depth.
In the frame 1 is av backing 2 comprising walls 3 and 4 spaced apart and suitably secured to a frame 5. The said walls and frame 5 conforming to the shape of frame 1 and fitting in the rear portion thereof.
The wall 4 is provided with suitable apertures 6 receiving the-stem portions of the lamp sockets 7 wliichare located within the casing and secured in place by collars 8 having screw threaded connection with the projecting stem portions of respective sockets, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
At the forward edge of frame 1 I provide a letter facing 9 conforming to the shape of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 28, 1908. seriai No. 387,199. i
said frame and having an opening 10 in the form of a letter. This facing vis provided on its rear face with a ridge 11 fitting about frame 1 and secured thereto by any suitable means as screws 12.
As it is oftentimes desirable in installing a sign on the roof of a building to project the sign well outwardly to obtain a better dislay, I preferably provide means, conveniently in the form of screws 14, for removably securing the backing 2 in place in frame 1 so that when desired to replace the lamp globes 15 the said backing may be withdrawn after releasing it from the securing means.
ln connection with frame 1 I have shown means whereby the same may be conveniently supported in place, the said means comprising suitable hangers 17 secured to frame 1 and engaged with a rod 1S, supported in any convenient manner on the building or other object where it is desired to install theV sign. Thus the backing 2 may be removed as heretofore described without disturbing the letter frame.
The several parts heretofore described can be readily assembled to form a letter or symbol which from any poin`t of view will present 'a symmetrical appearance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Fatent of the United States of America, is
In a sign, a frame in the form of a letter or symbol, a second frame removably secured in the rear portion of said first frame, a backing comprising walls in the form of a letter or symbol secured to the opposite faces of said second frame, and illuminating means mounted on tlie forward wall of said backing.
-Signed at Seattle, lashington tliis 26 day of July 1907.
HJ ALMAR OHRISTENSEN.
