Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1908.
Application filed January 9, 1908. Serial No. 409,921,
To eZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that i, EDWARD Jenn RYAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Danville, in the county of -Vermilion and State of Illinois, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Heat and Pressure specr- 1 through the device, Fig. 2 is a section of the upper end of the de e taken at right an gle to Fig. 1, Fig. 3 a botton'i plan view of one of the valves, am. at is an enlarged section of one of the \zlli'GS. The present embodiment of my invention, comprises 1, connected at one end by a pipe 3 with the boiler 2 and at the other end by a pipe 3 with the expansion tank 4. A fitting 5 arranged between the end of the casing and the pipe I; and a valve casing 6 is arranged between tli the pipe 2. A pipe 7 connects the fitting 5 with a valve casing 8, which in turn connected to the valve casing 6 by a pipe 9.
A valve seat 10 is provided in the casing t3, and a valve 11 normally rests on and closes seat. The said valve is provided outside of the seat with a luralit oi s irallv arran ed blades or vanes movement. desired heaviness, and is designed pressure. "For this 12, and'on its upper face with a threaded lug 13, which engages a threaded opening lid in the lower end of a weight 15 movable vertically in the casing 1. The upper end oi the weight isprovided with an opening 16 in which is received a pin 17, on a cross bar it; arranged within the fitting, the pin being designed to guide the weight in its vertical The weight 15 may be of any to keep the valve 11 closed until the water in the boiler attains a predetermined pressure. When this pressure is attained, the weight will be lifted, thus permitting the water to escape into the casing 1 and from thence into the expansion tank 4. A valve is also provided for permitting water to pass from the expansion tank to the boiler, when the pressure in the boiler. falls below a predetermined purpose the casing 8 is provided with a valve seat 19, upon which normally rests a valve 20, the valve being casing and provided with the spiral blades or vanes 12, before mentioned, and with a threaded lug 21 on its upper surface. The threaded lug engages in a threaded opening 22 of a weight 23, mounted for vertical movem nt in the pipe 9, and guided at its upper end by a pin 24 received in an opening in the end of the weight, and secured to a cross bar 25 in the casing 6. any desired heaviness, so that when the pres sure in the boiler falls below a predetermined level, water will be admitted from the expansion tank to the boiler.
By means of .the improvement, the pres sure of the water in the boiler may be maintained constantly. at a predetermined amount, the pressure being restored automatically when it passes above this predetermined point, or below i The arrangement of the spiral blades on the valves, provides for a turning movement of the said valves whereby to provide constant renewal of the valve surface and to prevent the-lodgment of foreign substances between the valve and its scat.
.l claim 1. The combinationqvith the boiler and expansion tank, of a casing provided with a valve seat, pipes connecting the casing with the boiler and the tank, a valve cooperating with the seat to close the communication from the boiler to the tank, a weight having an opening in its upper end detachably connected with the valve, a cross bar in the casing 'pTOYidCd with a pin for engaging the opening of the weight whereby to guide the same, a pipe leading from the tank to the boiler, a valve controlling the communication through the pipe, a weight detachably con nected with the valve, and means for guiding the movement of the valve, each of said valves bein provided with spirally arranged 2" vanes for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with the boiler and expansion tank, of a casing provided with a valve seat, pipes connecting the casing with the boiler and the tank, a valve cooperating with the seat to close the communication from the boiler to the tank, a weight having nected with the valve, a cross bar in the casfing provided with apin for engaging the l opening of the weight whereby to guide the same, a pipe leading from the tank to the boiler a valve controlling the communication The weight 23 may be made of an opening in its upper end detachably conthrough the pipe, a weight detachphly conwith the seat to close the communication between the boiler and the tank, a Weight detachably connected with the valve, means for guiding the movement of the Weight, a pipe leading from the tank to the boiler, a valve in the pipe for preventing movement offluid from the tank to the boiler, a weight detachably connected with the vali e and means for guiding the weight.
4. The. combination with the boiler and expansion tank, of a plurality of pipes connecting the boiler and the tank, a valve in one of said pipes for preventing movement of fluid from the tank to the. boiler, a Weight in connection with said valve for retaining when the said valve elosed against movement of lluid from the boiler to the tank below a predetermined pressure in the boiler, a valve in the i from the boiler to the tank, and means in' connection With saidvalve for permitting the passage of fluid from'the tank to the boiler pressure in the boiler falls below a predetermined value.
5. The combination withthe boiler arid the expansion tank, of a plurality of pipes connecting the tank and the boiler, means in one of said pipes for preventing passage of fluid from the tank to the b iler and for permitting passage of fluid from the boiler to the tank When the pressure in the boiler exceeds a predetermined value, and means in the other pipe for preventing the passage of fluid from the boiler to the tank, but permitting passage of the fluid from the tank to the boiler when the pressure injthe boiler falls below a predetermined value.
