Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. Bo'rT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Leadville, in the county of Lake and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Wrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to wrenches having fixed and slidable aws, and its object is to to provide a new and improved wrench, to allow a quick and accurate adjustment of the movable jaw vrelative to the fixed jaw, and to securely hold the movable jaw in the adj usted gripping position.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully vdescribed hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention.
is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The shank A of the wrench is provi ed at one end with a suitable handle B, and at the other end with a fixed jaw O, o erating in lg, having a yoke D' and mounted to slide on the shank A. In the movable jaw D is held a bearing E, for the forward end F' of a screw rod F to turn in, the said screw rod F extending parallel to the shank A, and having its other end F2 ournaled in a bearing B' formed on the ferrule B2 of the handle B. The screw rod F is provided with the usual hand wheel F3, under the control of the operator, for turning the screw rod F whenever it is desired to adjust the' movable jaw D relative to the fixed jaw C.
The screw rod F screws in a nut formed of an inner section G and an outer section G", the sections being interlocked by tongues and grooves G2, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 5, the inner section G being interposed between the shank A and the screw rod F, while the outer section G' has its outer side G3 beveled,
to engage a correspondinglyfshaped bevel D2 formed on the inside of the yoke D', in which the sectional nut is confined. A composite spring formed of the members H and H', compresses the inner section G, so as to normally hold the nut in firm engagement with the screw rod F, owing to the bevel G3 of the outer section G' sliding on the bevel D2 of the yoke D'. the composite spring are in the form of forks, as plainly shown in Figs. 6 and 7, and the member H is provided with a pin H2, having an under-cut for receiving the shank I-I3 of the other member I-I. The fork of the spring member H extends between pairs of lugs G4, arranged exteriorly on the inner nut section G, and the terminal of the fork rests on a bar H4 secured by screws H5 to the yoke D', at the under side thereof, as plainly indicated in the drawings. The other spring member I-I' rests at its fork terminal on the lower lug G4, so as to press the nut section G upward and with it the other nut section G', for clampingly engaging the nut sections G and G' with the screw rod F. Now when the outer handle end H(i of the member H' of the composite spring is pressed by the operator, then the nut section G, and also the nut section G' are released, and the nut section G' in moving outwardly causes a loosening of the screw rod F, to permit of conveniently and quickly sliding the movable jaw D on the shank A, without requiring manual turning of the screw rod F. As soon as the pressure is released on the composite spring, then the nut sections G, G' again engage the screw rod F with sufficient clamping force to securely hold the nut in position on the screw rod F. Now it will be seen that by having the section G' beveled and engaging a corresponding bevel on the yoke D' of the movable jaw D, itis evident that pressure exerted against the movable jaw D causes a firm locking of the section G' with the screw rod F, to prevent accidental turning thereof.
The screw rod F is free to slide in the direction ofits length, and is spring-pressed, to permit the screw rod F to yield in the direction of its length. For the purpose mentioned, the end F2 of the screw rod F rests on a spring I, preferably formed of a plurality of disks, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2, the disks being seated in the bearing B'. A screw F4 screws in the end FZ and limits the outward or forward sliding movement of the screw rod F but allows compression of the spring I. Now when the spring I is compressed by The members H, H' of pressure on the aw D, the outer face of the hand wheel F3 abuts against the ferrule B2, so as to lock the screw rod F by frictional contact of the hand wheel F3 with the face of the bearing B on the ferrule B2. As shown in the drawings, the hand wheel F3 normally extends loosely in a notch A, formed in the shank A.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A wrench, comprising a 'fixed jaw, a movable jaw having a bevel on its inner face, a shank carrying the fixed aw on which the movable jaw is mounted to slide, a screw rod for moving the movable jaw along the said shank, a sectional nut in the said movable jaw, and made of an inner and an outer sectio'n, the sections having a loose interlocking engagement, and the inner section being interposed between the shank and the screw rod, and the outer section being provided with a bevel corresponding to the bevel on the movable jaw, and a manually-controlled spring held on the movable jaw and engaging the said nut whereby the spring serves to hold the nut in engagement with the screw rod and to disengage the nuts therefrom.
2. A wrench, comprising a fixed jaw, a movable j aw, a shank carrying the iixed aw and. on which the movable jaw is mounted to slide, a screw rod for moving the movable jaw along the said shank, a sectional nut in the said movable jaw and made of an inner and an outer section, the sections being interlocked and the inner section being interposed between the shank and the screw rod, and the outer section being provided with a bevel engaging a corresponding bevel on the movable jaw, and a manually-controlled composite spring, having the end of one member secured to the movable jaw, the other spring member resting on lugs arranged exteriorly on the inner member.
3. A wrench comprising a shank having a fixed jaw, a movable jaw on the shank and provided with an apertured yoke having a beveled inner face, a screw rod mounted in the yoke and shank, a sectional nut on the screw rod within the yoke, the sections having guided movement one on the other and one of them having a bevel face engaging the bevel of the yoke, and a spring engaging one of the nut sections and projecting out through the aperture of the yoke.
4. A wrench, comprising a shank having a fixed jaw, a movable jaw on the shank and provided with an apertured yoke having a beveled inner face, a screw rod mounted in the yoke and shank to have limited sliding movement, a spring against which one end of the screw rod rests, a sectional nut on the screw rod within the yoke, one of the sections having a beveled face engaging the beveled face of the yoke, and a spring for forcing the sections of the nut into engagement with the screw rod, the spring projecting out through the aperture of the yoke.
5. ln a wrench, the combination with a shank having a fixed jaw, a movable jaw on the shank, a sectional nut carried by the movable jaw, and a screw rod engaged by said nut, of a composite spring for forcing the nut into engagement with the screw rod, the members of the spring having interlocking engagement and one engaging the movable jaw and the other one section of the nut.
6. ln a wrench, the combination with a shank having a 'fixed jaw, a movable ljaw on the shank, a sectional nut carried by the movable jaw, one section of the nut being provided with pairs of lugs, and a screw rod engaged by the nut, of a composite spring for forcing the nut into engagement with the screw rod, the spring consisting of forked members having interlocking engagement, one member having its forks extending between the lugs of one nut section. and secured to the jaw and the other having its forks resting against one of each pair of lugs.
