that the top lever may return to its normal position in order that the stock when separated from the barrels may be packed conveniently in a carrying case.
Objects of the invention are to improve various features of breech-loading guns to enable them to be handled safely and operated conveniently and expeditiously, and to provide an improved single trigger for double arrel guns that will permit either barrel to be fired in succession without firing the remaining barrel, and also to permit of firin' either barrel first and the remaining barre immediately afterward, a further object being to rovide'means for releasing the barrellock W en-latched in 0 en position so as to permit return of the top ever to normal position.

mounted rotatively and having a transverse slot extending from the slot 14 so as to the trigger plate; 5,.the fore-end wood; 6, the fore-end iron having the usual h-inging end 6; 7 and 8, the gun barrels provided with the usual hinging hook 9 for connection V with the pivot 10 in the hinging end 2 of the frame, the upper portion of the frame' having a recess 11 therein to receive the lug .12 that is attached to the rear ends of the barrels. The upper portion of the frame is provided with a hollow cylindrical lock 13 shown in Fig. 35 having a longitudinal slot 14 in its the lock being form a curved bolt 16 adapted to be projected through a suitable opening in the lug 12 for locking the barrels to the frame. The forward end of the lock 13 has a recess-17, at one end of which is a notch 18 in the exterior of the wall of the lock, the opposite end of the lock having an aperture 19 in its end adjacent to the wall thereof.
The interior of the frame 2 is provided with a journal bearing 20 arranged a short distance above the trigger plate, and a shaft 21 is j ournaled in the bearing and also in the tang 3, and has the top lever 22 suitably mounted on the top thereof so as to operate in the usual manner upon the tang for unlocking the barrels, the shaft being turned by the lever, .the lever iving a jaw 23 pivotally connected then o the jaw having a finger 24 extending into the aperture 19 for rotatively operating the lock 13. Arms 25 and 26 are attached to the shaft 21 near the lower end thereof, and the arm 25 is engaged by a plunger 27 that is forced against the arm by a spring 28 seated in the frame which constitutes the top lever spring for normally holding the bolt 16 in its locking position, the bolt 16 being held in unlocking position by a latch bolt 29 that is mounted in the frame and movable vertically by a spring 30 and having a rear guide face 31 in engage;
ment with the lock 13 in the recess 17, the
latch bolt having a shoulder 32 adapted to enter the notch 18 whereby the lock 13 is held against rotative movement with the top lever 22 projecting over one side of the stock as indicated by dotted lines in Fig.- 2, so as to be obstructive whenplacing the gun stock in a traveling case. Ordinarily the lever may be permitted to move to its normal position only by swinging the gun barrels so that the lug 12 engages and pushes down the latch bolt 29 out of the notch 18, or by inserting some instrument into-the recess 11 and forcing the latch bolt 29 downward by hand, the latter operation being usually inconvenient, the latch bolt 29 being normally forced upward by the spring 30. The latch bolt 29 has an inclined face 33 opposite which a guide bore 34 is formed in the frame and supports'a push .bar 35 having a V- shaped notch 36 in its side in Which is seated a V-shaped catch 37 guided in a recess 38 and normallyheld yieldingly in the notch by a spring 39, the inner end of the push bar having an inclined face 40 to engage the shoulder 33, so that if the push bar 35 be forced inward, the latch bolt 29 will be forced downward out. of the notch 18, the catch 37 causing retraction .of the pushbar and holding it in its normal position, and also the inclined shoulder'33 may assist in retracting the pushbar when the latter is released by the operator.

and arranged above and forwardspectively, of the pivot pin 43, the pivoted portions of thehammers having curved forward faces 43, at the lower parts of which are projections 44 to be engaged by the scars 45 and 46 when the hammers are cocked, the sears being mounted as usual on a pivot pin 47 behind the hammers and extending rearward above the trigger plate, the sears being normally forced into engagement with the hammers by suitable sear springs 48. The frame has suitable chambers 49 and 49 extending in inclined directions from the chambers in which the hammers are mounted downward through the pivoting end 2 of the frame, and cooking rods 50 and 50 are mounted in the chambers and guided therein and have hooks 51 and 51 engaging the wrist pins 41 and 42 respectively, so that the rods niav push the hammers back to cocked )ositions or draw them forward for firing, t e latter operations being accomplished partly by the pins 41" and 42 forward. A pair of ush levers 55 and 55 are mounted in suitab e res cesses in the hinging end 2 and have each a projection 55" on the outer side thereof, the push levers being normally pressed against the cooking rods 50 and 50 by suitable springs 56 and 56', the push levers being. preferably supported by a pivot pin 57. The hinging end 2 has a projection 58 on the top of the pivoting pin 16 for engagement with shoulders 59 on the under sides of the- extractors 60 and 60 foroperating the extractors a short distance in the usual vmanner in order to slightly withdraw the cartridge shells from the barrels when the latter are released by. the top lever 22 and swung away fromtheframe. The push levers are employed' as an intermediate means for cocking the hammers and for operating the,
ejectors, aswill further appear, the projections of the push levers extending into openings 61 and 61 that are formed in the pivoting ends 6' of-the foreend iron, the pivoting end 6 having also an opening 62 between the other two openings and opposite a central-recess that is formed in the companion pivoting end 2 to provide a shoulder-63'- for actuating portions of the ejector's.
An ejector box 64 is suitably secured upon the top of the fore-end iron 6 and has a pair of ears-65 and 65 extending througha slot 6 in the fore-end iron, the ears. supporting a pivot'66 below the fore-end iron. A pair of ejector hammers 67 and 67 are mounted inthe ejector box and provided each with an arm 68 having projections 69 and 69"on the lower end thereof, preferably formed as ratchet teeth, the hammers being normally forced rearward, each by a spring 70 and held in retracted positions by ejector sears 71 and 71 having each a lateral arm 71, the

In the upper portion of the main part of the trigger a reversing trip-bloclr 78 is; mounted rotatively and projecting through the sides of said main part, and provided. with an operating lever "f9 which extends through a suitable opening 79 in the trigger plate adjacent to which are designations S0 and 80 as R and L (shown in Fig. 3) indicating the right barrel and the left barrel respectively.
The trip-blockis held in either one of two positions by'means or" a spring 81 forcing a plunger 82 into depressions S2 in the tripblock, the end portions of the trip-block having flat sides 83 and83 whose faces are in diiferent planes. under the rear ends of the sears 45 and 46 and may trip either one of the sears only without being manually readjusted, it; being designed that the trip-block may be adjusted rotatively by means of the lever 79 so'that t'he'flat, side 83 may be turned towards the right-hand sear when it is not desired to fire the right-hand barrel, the block being adapt- The trip-block extends ed to fire the left-hand barrel in this position,
or when desired to fire the right-hand barrel and not the left-hand barrel the flat side will be brought around opposite to the loithand sear. The main. trigger part has a reipess 76 in the top thereof rearward of the trip block 78 and. an alternate trip block 84 is mounted in the recess on a pivot 84 and eX tends upwardly past the rear ends of the sears 45 and 46, but lateral arms on the trip block may be moved under the ends of the sears under certain conditions, so that after one sear has been. tripped by the trip block 78, then on pulling the tri ger a second time the remaining sear may be tripped by the trip block 84, the latter having two laterally extending arms 85 and 85 for engaging the under sides of the sears. The trip block 84 is normally pressed forward or towards the sears by a spring 86 mounted in a chamber 76" of the trigger main part and supported by a plug 86 inserted in the chamber.
.A housing 87 is mounted on the post 75 or maybe otherwisesupported and has a push bar 88 mounted slidingly therein and normally pressed against the arm 26 by a spring 89' mounted in the housing, the push bar being employed for pushing the alternate trip block 84 away from the sears toits inopera+ tive position when thetop lever 22 is oper ated to unlock the gun barrels from the frame, and the trip block 84 is normally held in such inoperative position by means of a trip block detent 90'which is supported on the trigger main part 76 by a pivot 90 rearward of the trip block 84. The detent has a pair of hooks 91'and 01 on the forward end thereof adapted to engage the arms and 85 for holding the trip block 84 in its inoperative position and having also a hook 92 on its opposite end, the two hooks oeing automaticallyheld in engagement by a spring 93. A standard 9% is mounted fixedly on the top of the trigger plate 4 rearward of the trigger and supports a recoil safety lock 95 which is suitably weighted and swings on a pivot 95 that is connected to the standard, the lock having a hook 96 adapted to automatically engage the hook 92 when the gun is fired to prevent the outward or downward movement of the trigger to its full extent, and
therefore prevent the movement of the arms 1 85 and S5 downward. sufliciently to pass under the sears. The standard is provided with a stop shoulder 94 adapted to be engaged by the rearward end of the detent when the trigger is operated for disconnecting the hooks 91- and 91 from the arms 85 and 85, so that the trip block-8e may be moved forward against the rear ends of the sears. The safety lock is normally forced rearwardly and away from the detent 90 by a spring 97 seated therein and engaging the standard 94. The standard supports a safety bar 98 which is mounted pivotally on a pin 98 on the top of the standard, the bar being controlledby a slide 99. that is mounted in a slot 3 of the tang 3, and has a projection "100provided with a pin 101 connecting a reach rod 102 therewith that is connected to the upper end of the safety bar 98, so that the lower end of-the safety bar may be moved onto the top of the alternate trip block S-l to positively prevent operation of the trigger. The slide 09 is prevented from being moved accidentally by means of depressions 103 that are formed in the reach rod, and a plunger 104 mounted in a suitable recess in the tang 8 and forced by a spring 105 against the reach rod, so that the latter becomes latched when the plunger enters either one of the recesses.
In practical use the gun may be operated and fired in substantially the same manner as similar gunshave heretofore been used. it"is preferred to lire both barrels, first the right-hand and then the left-hand barrel, the lever 79 should be moved forward toward the 'letter R and no further manual adjustment will be required for firing the bar-.

projection 9a and cause the detent to release the trip block 84, so that when the trig er descends the mechanism will be ready to fire the remaining barrel,'since the arm 85 will be tripped thereby when the trigger is again pulled. If the detent 90 is not released involuntarily from the trip block 84 and the safety lock 95, as abovean'entioned, this should be accomplished by pulling the trigger purposely, after which the trigger may be pulled to fire the gun. If'it is desired to fire the left-hand barrel first and then the other one repeatedly, the lever 79 should be moved to its opposite position. In case that it be desired to keep a loaded cartridge in one barrel and fire the other barrel repeatedly, this may bedoneby simply pulling the trigger once after reloading the barrel each time that it may have been fired, since either sear may be operated other sear which cannot be operated by the alternate trip-block 84 if the trigger is permitted to remain. at rest after firing the barrel which it may have been predetermined to fire alone. After operating one hammer the cocking rod of that hammer will be in its forward position as in Figs. 8 and 18, while the other rod will remain as in Fig. 9. If then the barrels be unlocked and swung on their pivot, the push lever 55 would be projected against the pin 57, and the projection 55 would engage the sear 71 so as to release it from the projection 69, and with a further movement of the barrels on their pivot the shoulder 63 will engage the detent 73 and disconnect it from both of the projections 69, thus releasing the ejector hammer 67 for throwing out the empty shell, while the other ejector sear will restrain the other ejector hammer. Other results of the operations of the gun will be readily understood from the foregoing descriptions in detail.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is i 1.. A gun-trigger including a main part with a pivotal axis, an alternate trip-block side of the main part.
3 A guwtrigger including a recessed main part Witha pivotal axis, an alternate trip-- lock having a lateral arm thereon and pivoted in the recess of the main part, a spring mounted in the main part and normally pressing the trip-block towards the pivotal axis, a detent pivoted to the main part and spring-pressed to hold the trip-blook when the latter is moved reversely away from the pivotal axis. i I

A gun-trigger including a main part with a pivotal axis, a reversing trip-block moiinted rotatively in the main part with its axis parallel to. the pivotal axis of the mainpart, the trip-block having two recessed side portions whose faces are in different planes and at opposite sides of the main part, one end of the trip-block having an operating device the: on, the'middle portion of the tripblock having depressions in the side thereof, anda latch device mounted in the main art andspring-pressedagainst the trip-bloc to enter either one of the de ressions.

A gun including a trigger comprising a main part, a cylindrical reversing trip block inountedrotatively on the main part and having an operating lever and also two flat sideoportions whose faces are in different planes, means for'latching the block against rotative movements, an alternatetrip block pivoted to the mainap art and spring-pressedtowards the reversing" trip block, and a detent pivoted to the main part and spring- "pressed to hold the alternate trip block when the latter is moved. reversely away from the reversing trip block.
6. A gun including two sears, a trigger plate, a trigger main part pivoted to the trigger plate and having a reversing trip block mounted thereon adjustably under the two sears to engage either one only of the sears when the main part is moved, an alternate trip block pivoted to the main part and havingtwo arms movable to or under the ends of the sears, as ring normally pressing the al-' ternate trip'bl ock towards the sears, a detent pivoted to the trigger main plart and spring pressed into engagement wit the retracted alternate trip block, a standard supported fixedly on the trigger plate and having a projection to be engaged by the detent to release the alternate trip bloc pivoted to'the standard and movable into locking engagement with the detent to temporarily limit the downward movement of the trigger and prevent premature moveinents of the arms'of the trip block beneath the sears, and a s ring pressing the safety look away from the detent when released therefrom.
7. A gun including a frame with a top tang, a trigger plate, two sears,
a recoil safety lock:
trigger 3 pivoted to the standard and having -niiiinpart pivoted to the trigger plate and for temporarily holding the alternate trip block away from the sears, means for automatically disenga 'ng the detent from the alternate trip bloc r, a safety bar controlled and movable manually against a part of the trigger to lock the trigger against operative movements towards the tang, and a recoil safety lock-movable automaticallyinto looking engagement with the detent to temporarily limit the downward movement of the trigger and prevent engagement of the safety bar with the trigger part,

two sears, a trigger main part pivoted to the trigger plate and having a reversing trip block and also an alternate trip block mount ed thereon to trip the sears separately, the alternate trip block being pivoted and movable to or from the sears, a spring normally pressing the alternate trip block to the sears, a push-bar for moving the alternate trip block away from the sears, a detent for h0lding the alternate trip block away from the sears, means for releasing the alternate trip block'from the detent, a top lever, a shaft connected to the top lever and mounted in the frame, an arm on the shaft for operating the push-bar, gun barrels pivoted to the frame, and a lock for the barrels connected with the shaft,

In a gun, the combination of a frame having a guide-bore in a side thereof, a pushbar mounteo'slidingly in the guide-bore, and a spring-pressed latch-bolt in the frame having an inclined shoulder adjacent to the inner end of the push-bar to be engaged thereby for retracting the latch-bolt, with a gunbarrel hinged to the frame, a barrel-lock in the frame to he held in unlocked position by said latch-bolt, and a top-lever-for operating the harrel-lock.
13. In a gun, the combination with a frai'ne, a rock-shaft mounted in the frame with top lever thereon, .two pivoted sears, a trigger-plate, and a trigger mainpart pivoted to the triggei plate, of a reversing tripblock mounted on the main part, an alternate trip-block mounted on the main part to actuate the sears, a spring mounted on the main part and normally holding the alternate trip-block to the scars, a detent'for holding the alternate trip-hlock away from the sears, a push-bar mounted slidingly for pushing the from the sear and the alternate trip-block into engagement with the detent, and an arm on the rock-shaft to engage and operate the push-bar when the top lever is moved. In a gun, the combination of a frame provided with a spring-pressed catchmounted therein and having a V-shaped end, a push-bar mounted slidingly in the frame across the V-shaped end and having a V- shaped notch therein normally receiving said end, and a spring-pressed latch-bolt having an inclined shoulder to be engaged by. the
push-bar for retracting the latch-bolt, with a gun-barrel hinged to the frame, abarrel lock in the frame to be held in unlocked position by said latch-bolt, and a top lever for operati ng the barrel lock.
15. In a gun, the combination with a trigger-plate, and two pivoted scars, of a trigger main part pivoted to the plate, a trip-block on the main part to actuate one of the sears and having an operating lever thereon that normally extends through the trigger plat-e, an alternate trip-block pivoted on the main part to engage and actuate the othi'fi'one of the sears, a detent pivoted on the to engage and hold the alternate trip-block away from the sears and having a hoo thereon, a pivoted'safety lock having a hook to engage the book of thedetent, and a fixed stop device to be engaged by the detent for disengaging it from the alternate trip-block.

In a gun, the combination with a trigger-plate, a trigger main part pivoted to the trigger-plate, a slotted tang, and a sear, of a, trip-block pivoted on the trigger main part and spring-pressed to operatively engage the sear, a detent pivoted on' themain part to engage and hold thetrip-block away from the sear, a safety-bar movable to a position main part opposite the trip-block to lock the main part,
a slide on the tang having operative connection with the safety-bar, and a fixed stop device to be engaged by the detent fordisengaging it from the trip-block.
17. In a gun, the combination with a trigger plate, and two sears, of a trigger part pivoted to the plate and having a member provided with a hook, a trip-block supported on 'the main trigger part to be moved into engagement with the sears when said trigger part is retracted, a standard secured on the trigger plate, a safety lock pivoted to the standard and having a hook to engage the hook of said member for preventing retraction of the main trigger part, and a spring acting to hold said lock hook away from the hook of said trigger memher.
