DENTAL-BROACH-COVERING MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH SIEGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental-Broach- Covering Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of my invention to provide a dental-broach covering mechanism whereby it is made possible to cover a dental broach evenly with a fine film of cotton or other fiber in rapid manner, the covered broach to be employed in the treatment or drying of root-canals in the teeth of patients in rapid and efficient manner.
In the treatment of the teeth of dental patients it is necessary to reach the interior of long canals, as for instance, in the treatment of nerve canals of the teeth. These canals are usually of very small diameter and it is necessary to reach all parts of the canal in the treatment of the same. I accomplish this treatment by providing a dental broach with a thin film of cotton or other fiber with which the medicine to be applied in the cavity may be saturated or the fiber may be applied in a dry state for the absorption of moisture in the canal. In order to accomplish the covering of the broach I have provided my improved mechanism, by means of which I am enabled to cover a dental broach, whether straight or tapering, with an even thickness of fiber throughout its length, in rapid manner and to quickly apply the same after being covered. By means of my improved device also the extreme end of the broach may have only a very thin covering applied thereto, the covering increasing in diameter toward the heel of the broach according to the shape of the root-canal that is being momentarily treated.

A represents a motor comprising a frame B in which an armature-shaft C is journaled in bearings b. The frame B is shown as a magnet-frame which comprises the core 6 having the upward extensions 6 about which core the field-coil b is wound, the armature rotating between said extensions N. I prefer that the armature-shaft shall be inclined and I accomplish this preferably by mounting the frame upon an inclined support d of a base D. The frame constitutes the stationary magnet of the motor.
E is the cover for the motor. This cover preferably comprises the swinging coverparts E E respectively hinged by hinges e to the base, a catch 0 securing the parts in closed relation. The cover is also provided with an aperture 6 through which the armature-shaft extends, part of this aperture being on each of said cover-parts. The outer end of this armature-shaft is provided with a tapered head F, about which the tapered recess g in the handle g of a broach-holder G is pressed for causing the rotation of the armature-shaft to be imparted to the broachholder and permitting ready release of the broach holder when the covering of the broach has been accomplished for quick application of the covered broach to the tooth to be treated. The recess 9 is at one end of the broach-holder, the other end of the broach-holder being provided with a clutch H into which a broach I is releasably secured.
K is an electric switch located at the top of the cover. This switch is normally open and is adapted to be closed by pressure of the hand thereon during the time it is desired to have the motor operate. Pressure upon the switch closes the same for supplying electric energy to the motor for quickly starting the same, the release of the switch causing instant cutting out of electric power to the motor. Wires L L may lead from the motor to any suitable source of electric ener 'y.
The cotton or other fiber with which it is desired to cover the broach, is held against the broach between the thumb and fingers and pressed against the broach, the preferable position of the fingers being indicated in Fig. 4, whereby the thin filaments of the fiber are wound about the broach owing to the cover M of the fiber, which may be of even rapid rotation imparted to the latter by the motor and the pressure exerted thereon by the hand. The broach is thus provided with a thickness throughout as'indicated in Fig. 5, so that the covered broach will have an outer tapering surface corresponding to the taper of the broach, it being understood that the broach shown tapers toward'its outer or overhanging end. It is also possible by means of my improved device to provide the extreme end of the broach with a very thin covering, this covering gradually increasing in diameter toward the base of the broach, if it is desired to give the covering a greater taper than the taper of the broach itself. By means of my improved device this covering is tightly and evenly wrapped about the broach so that the covering will adhere to the broach throughout treatment, the point of the broach being covered and remaining covered during application of the broach, as
the covering is prevented from slipping back upon .the broach owing to the tightness with which it is wrapped about the same. This wrapping is accomplished without permitting loose ends of fiber to extend from the end of the broach which in application would be liable to be turned back upon the covering of the broach and cause obstruction to the entrance of the fine point of the broach into the fine root-canal.
The covering of the broach is rapidly ac complished by means of my improved device, whereupon the broach-holder is slipped off the head F for application of the covered broach to the canal in the patients tooth. My improved device enables these movements to be accomplished with great rapidity which is a desirable feature when it is considered that very often twenty-five or even fifty or more applications of this kind are necessary at a single treatment. I mount the armature shaft at an angle so that the broach may project upwardly at a similar angle for convenient application of the fiber.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. In a dental-broach covering mechanism, the combination of a revoluble shaft, a
broach-holder, a dental broach in said broach holder, and a releasable driving connection between said shaft and broach-holder for holding said broach to said shaft for being I turned thereby while receiving a fiber-covermg in the manner specified and permitting ready release of said broach-holder from said shaft when said broach has received its fiber-covering, substantially as described.
2. In a dental-broach covering mechanism, the combination of a magnet-frame, an armature-shaft revoluble therein, a broachholder, a dental broach in said broachholder, and a releasable driving connection between said armature-shaft and said broachholder for holding said broach to said armature-shaft for being turned thereby while re ceiving a fiber-covering in the manner specified and permitting ready release of said broach-holder from said shaft when said broach has received its fiber-covering, sub stantially as described.
3. In a dental-broach covering mechanism, the combination of a magnet-frame, an armature-shaft turning therein and supported in inclined osition, a broach-holder, and a releasable riving connection between said armature-shaft and broach-holder, for holding said broach-holder in inclined position while being turned by said armature-shaft so that the broach in said broach-holder may receive a fiber-covering in the manner specified, and permitting ready release of said broach-holder from said armature-shaft when said broach has received its fiber-covering, substantially as described.
4. In adental-broach covering mechanism, the combination of a magnet-frame, an armature-shaft turning therein in inclined position, a cover for said frame having an aperture through which said armature-shaft extends, a tapered head on said armatureshaft outside said cover, and a broach-holder having a tapered recess in which said tapered head has releasable fit, for holding said broach-holder and the broach therein in upwardly inclined position while said broach is being covered as described and permitting ready release of said broach-holder from said head when said broach has been. covered, substantially as described.
