Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1908.
Application filed January 6, 1908. Serial No. 409,432.
To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PETER IOTTO MARQUART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crestline, in the county of Crawford and -Stateof Ohio, have invented certain newl and useful Improvements in Brushes, ofwhich the following is a specification, reference lbeing had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to im rovemen'ts in which are provided with a reservoir for the liquid to be appliedlby the object of my invention is to of the. character just descri ed which will prove simple in construction, comparatively cheap in maiiufacture and most efficient in operation.
In the`drawings illustrating the principle ofymy invention and theI best mode now known to me of' applying that principle7 Figure 1 is a central vertical section through my new brush; Fig. 2 is a section on line A-e-A of Fig. l Fig. 3 is a detail showing the valve and the valve stem; Fig. 4 shows a modified form of my invention in which a bottleis used vas a reservoir and handle; and Fig; 5 is afsection Online B-B of Fig. 4.
he top of the handle a is provided with a bwhich closes the openin 'c through filed and (if provide a brush sto is screwe a ring or coll and the central cupshaped distributing plug e are secured the u perv ends of the bristles j'. The top of the distributin lplug e serves as a valve-seat and is rovide with openings g hich are norse of the handle a ylv r d between which w ma ly closed by the valve h. The latter is provided with a valve-stem i the lowerend of which 'is formed with a head y' between which and the top of the plug e is interplosed a conical coil-spring 7c Whlch normally olds the valve h-upon lts seat. The valve h is rovided with a base-disk m of rubber or like material. l
brush, the head j of the valveainst the articlel to be ressing, .paint or other in the reservoirxhandle a;
In using the stem is pressed a coated with= the Ale, thereby allowing brush; and an pening said plug and closes the and in this way the disk in is raised from the valve-seat'against the pressure of the spring the liquid in the reservoir or chamber a. to flow through the holes g and to be distributed among the bristles When the brush is not in use; the bristles are protected by the cover n. y
In Figs. 4 and 5, a modified forni of my invention is shownin which the brush is inserted in the mouth of a bottle o. A rubber band p encircles the collar or ferrule g and serves to seal the mouth of the bottle andl prevent leakage of the contents thereof. The valve-'stem 'i will serve as a guide along l which the liquid will trickle and the same is true of the coil-spring lc and the cylindrical walls of the central plug e.
It is obvious that by unscrewing vthe ferrule or binding ring d from the base m of the reservoir handle a, the chamber a may be filled or em tied through that end.
My new c evice is particularly ada ted for use in ap lying shoe dressin s7 liquic blacking and t e like; but it is o vious that any liquid to be applied as a coating by the brush may be used in the reservoir a.
I claim:
1. Thecombination with a handle Jformed with a chamber and having an opening at one end, of a ring'which extends into said opening and is provided with means for maintaining it therein; a central cu -shaped distribut ing plug the base of whic is perforated and extends into said chamber; a valve which is for said valve; a coil spring one lend of which bears against the base o said plug and the other en d of which presses against an end of saidvalve-stem; and bristies the inner ends of which are held firmly between said ring and plug.
2. The combination with a handle formed with a chamber and having an opening at one end, of a rin which extends into said a centra cup-shaped distributing base of which is perforated and exvalvel which is on the base of ug the tends into said chamber; a normally seated directly u oles therein; a
valve-stem for said valve; a coil sprin one n'Witness whereof Ihav'e hereunto set my 10- end of which beers againstthe base of said hand at said Crestlne this" 28th day of Deplug and the other' end of, which presses j cembel, 907,in the presence of the two unagnmst 'an end of'sad Valve-stem; bristles del-signed Witnesses.
the inner ends of which are held firmly between said Fing and plug; and a sealing ring JOHN PETER OTTO MARQART which enoireles the first-named -ring and Witnesses: seals the joint between the first-named ring WALTER F. MILLER,
and the walls of said opening. WM. C. MARQUART.
