Be it known that I, HUGO H. FREUDEN FELS, a subject of the Emperor of Austria- Hungary, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Siphon-Heads, of which the following is a s ecification.
My invention re ates to siphon heads and particularly to the construction and opera tion of the discharge valve therein.
In the accom anying drawings in which my invention is 1 lustrated, Figure 1 is avertical section of a siphon head and bottle neck with parts detached; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the valve with parts detached, or partlyin section; Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation partly broken away, of the push button, cap, and neck ring and Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the whole assembled.
The siphon head A is provided with the usual passage 1 for the valve spindle 2, which carries at its lower end the valve 3 with Washer 3*. Instead of o erating the valve by means of the ordinary l aterally projecting cam lever the spindle is carried through the upper part of the head and is threaded into a button 6 working in the chamber 4 in which is also located surrounding the spindle the valve spring 5. The lower end of this spring rests against the bottom of the chamber through washers 5 and is compressed by the button as the latter is screwed to the u per end of the spindle and the closure of t e passage 1 by the valve 3 is thus insured mechanically as well as by the pressure of the gases when the bottle is charged. By manually depressing the button 6 the spindle is forced down against the action of the spring 5 and the valve opened to permit the escape of the contents of the siphon. A finger brace A may be added on the side of the head to aid in this operation.
In connection with the button 6, I propose to provide a neck ring 12 threaded on the exterior of the neck portion of the siphon head, which has the several functions of dust guard, auxiliary actuating means for the valve, and safety shipping device. From the construction of the neck ring it will be seen (Fig. 3) that it is provided withan annular flange 8 at its u per edge, which forms an aperture of just sui icient diameter to permit the free passage of the button 6 therethrough. This sliding joint is made so snug that practically no dust can enter the head past the flange to clog the valve or enter the discharge passage for the contents of-the si phon. The ring is made to perform its second function as auxiliary operating means for the valve by means of a fin 9 on the button which is engaged by the flange 8 as the ring is screwed down. If the ring is turned down after the flange has engaged the fin on the button, the valve is opened in precisely the same manner as it is when depressed by manual depression of the button. The additional levera e obtained by the use of the ring may ma c this a desirable modeof operation however when the spring 5 is so strong as to make the first mentioned method of operation difiicult. Wings 7 on the ring facilitate its use for this purpose.
The most important function of the ring however is as a safety shipping device. The exposed button is continually in danger of accidental depression during transportation, causing a loss of the contents of the siphon. To avoid this risk I propose to provide the button with a cap 10, the edges of which project over the-flange 8 of the ring. If the ring is screwed up until the flange engages the cap, it is obvious that the button cannot be depressed since the ring now acts as a strut between the cap 10 and the stationary head A and prevents any movement of the button until the ring is screwed down again. Accidental loss during shipment is thus prevented, and the siphons may even be shipped bottom up resting upon the cap with perfect safety.
The head A may be conveniently attached to the siphon by means of a threaded split ring 11 which fits below the shoulder on the neck 16 of the bottle. As the head is screwed down the lip of the funnel-shaped top of the discharge tube 13 is compressed between washers 14 and 15 so as to insure a perfectly tight joint.
It will be seen that the construction em ployed permits of the ready detachment of all the parts for the purpose of cleaning, re-
placing washers or defective parts at a moment s notice.
While the construction shown is believed to be the most convenient form in which the invention may be embodied, I do not limit myself to the specific features shown, but claim as my invention 1. A si hon head having a discharge passage for t e contents of the siphon, a valve therein and a valve spindle extending upwardly through the siphon head in combination with an operating button on the upper end of said spindle, and a dust ring surround ing said button with a sliding joint and threaded on the neck of the siphon head.
2. A siphon head having a discharge passage for the contents of the siphon, a valve therein and a valve spindle extending upwardly through the siphon head, in combination with an operating button on the upper end of said spindle, and a ring surrounding said button and threaded on the neck of the siphon head, said ringbeing provided with an inwardly extending projection and said button having an exterior projection adapted to be engaged thereby.
3. A si hon head having a discharge passage fort e contents of the siphon, a valve therein and a valve spindle extending up wardly through the siphon head, in combination with an operating button on the upper end of said spindle, and a ring surrounding said button and threaded on the neck of the siphon head, said button being provided with a cap adapted to be engaged by said ring.
4. A siphon head having a discharge passage for the contents of the siphon, a valve therein and a valve spindle extending upwardly through the siphon head, in combi nation with an operating button on the upper end of said spindle, and a finger brace on said head to assist the operation of sai button.
5. A siphon head having a discharge pas sage for the contents of the siphon, a valve therein and a valve spindle extending upwardly through the siphon head, in combination with an operating button on the upper end of said spindle, and a ring surrounding said button and threaded on the neck of the siphon head, said ring being provided with an inwardly projecting flange and said button having an external fin adapted to be engaged thereby.
6. A siphon head having a discharge passage for the contents of the siphon, a valve therein and a valve spindle extending upwardly through the siphon head, in combi nation with an operating button on said spindle, a ring movably secured on the neck of the siphon head and means in connection with said ring for holding said button in inoperative position.
