Description

No. 893,513.Y
Specification of Letters Patent.
li W Y O R li Application filed. February 24, 1908. Serial tl'o. ll'e.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES A. JUENGST, la citizen of the United States, residing at Groton Falls, in the county of Vestehester and State lof New York, have invented an Improvement in the Methods of Sewing Signatures to Forni Books, of which the followingr is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved method of sewingT signatures to Jform books, with the object of simplifying the eonstruotion, enabling the said book to be laid out substantially fiat and at the same time looking iirinly together the loops of thread that are pushed out of the baeli fold.
In Carrying)T out my invention, I lay a thread along, through and Within the back fold of each signature and about the same time push out of the back fold several loolps oi each thread. After the threads of all t ie signatures collated have been thus laid through and the loops pushed out of the haek fold, one or n'iore of these loops as may he desired, is pulled through other alined loops of the signatures and the remaining threads are drawn upon to draw down the loops and thus holdv the signatures together the threads ol' the loops th at have been drawn through, forming, as it were, a flexible bar eonnee ng or tying together the respective signatures.
ln the drawing7 Figures 1,-2 and 3 are perspective views sh owing a nuniher o'lt collated signatures and showingl lorins oil' the method elnploved by lne in connecting' the saine. Figs. l, 5 und 6 are diagraniniatie views of the sewing threads, Fig. Ll showing the thr )ads ol' Fig. lfsll 5 the threads of Fig. .2 and ["ig. (j the threads ol' Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section illustrating 'that any one o'll these l'orins olt sewing' may be eniployed with the signatures where the beek fold is eut away to leave a groove. Figs. 8 and 9 are detached longitudinal sorti ons eaeh showing a loop ol" thread pushed out of the hack iold; Fig. 8 having' two threads in the grip of the loop and Fig, l) showing 'four threads in the grip ol' the loop, as will he the ease in Figs. l and 3 with reference to Il1 ig'. tl, or Fig. 2 will: reference to Fig'. l).

Fig. 7 simY ly serves to illustrate that instead of ho es being formed by a puncturing 4instrument in the back fold of each. signature, that these backl folds may be cut through by removing the sections as is old in this art and the-loop..y of the threads be laid' through these cuts; said cuts leaving ample soace for the respective threads as es ecially illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, forit wi be ap-l parent that as shown in Figs. 4 and 6, there would be in such cuts or channels four threads, or six threads according to thedial grammatic view of Fig, 5, and the special illustration of Fig. 7. The free ends of the res )ective threads that are laid through and wit 1in the 'back folds of the signatures may -he trimmed ofi' intrimming the signatures for binding or they may he fastened in the f'old or over the back of a signature or in any other desired manner which forms 'no part of my present invention; this method of sewing signatures to `form books having particular reference to the cheaper form of books orY those inexpensively made.
I claim as my invention:
l. The method herein speci'lied of sewin signatures to form books, the same consisting in laying 'a thread along, through and within the hack fold of each signature in suc cession/forming loopsof each thread in succession that are passed out through the hack `fold of the signatures, then engaging the loops of one of the'signatures and drawing.
the same through the sir'nilar alined loops of other signatures and then drawing down the remaining loops of thread around the aforesaid threads to hold the signatures together in forming a book.
2. The method herein specified 4of sewing signatures to form books, the same consisting in laying a thread along, through and cession, forming loops of each thread in succession that are passed out through the back fold oi' the signatures and 'then drawing the several loops of an outside signaturerthrough all of theloops'of the other signatures and then drawing down the loops of said other signatures around the-threads of the loops drawn fromthe outside signature so as to connect the signatures in forming a book.

The method herein specified of sewing signatures to form books, the same consisting in laying -a thread along, through and within the back fold of each slgnature in succession, forming loops of each thread in succession that are passed out through the back fold of the vsignatures and then engaging the res .ective loo s 'of both outside signatures an drawing t e same in opposite directions through the alined loops of the intervening signatures and then drawing down the ythreads of the intervening signatures around the thread so drawn through to connect the signatures and form the book.
