JOHN'J. PHARES, OF ZIONSVILLE, INDIANA. Lmm Patent No. 89,337, daad April 27, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN' RAILROAD-FARE BOXES.
The Schedule xeferred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN J. PHnRns, of Zionsville, Boone county, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improved Mode of Collecting Railroad-Fare, which I call Railroad Economy and Safety- Fund Box; also, a New Form of Ticket, in connection with said box; and I do hereby declare that the following is a true and correct statement of the same, having reference to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of myinvention consists in a plan of collecting fare on railroads, or any other use for' which said invention may apply, and thus keeping an account of all moneys collectedbetweeu railroad companies and their employees, anda great saving of ticket expenses, as said tickets will continue good for six days, commencing with letter M, on annexed drawings of g. 4, at the bottom of said ticket, thus representing six days of the week, Monday being represented byy letter Maud Saturday by letter S at the top of said ticket.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my machine alter the followingr manner:
I make a tin can after the formof a bucket, as described by annexed drawings at lig. l; also, having a door, as marked at letter H, having said door placed upon hinges, so as to be opened or closed at pleasure. I then make a revolving Wheel, which I call ticketcarriage, as seen at iig. 2, annexed drawings.
I then divide the head of said wheel in as many divisions as I wish, as marked at letter I, representing the divisions, such divisions containing the numbers of all stations on any given road for which I desire said machine, each division containing the number of ten stations, as marked below in the apertures at letters J, thus making the numbers in the divisions to correspend with the apertures of letters J, said apertures containing ten ticket-boxes each, and the said ticketboxes containing the numbers of the stations marked on the divisions above on carriage-head.
I also make a stationary handle, as seen in iig. 2, at letter K, for the purpose of lifting said carriage out of iig. 1.
I also place four knobs, lettered L, for the purpose of turning said-carriage when in the hands of the con'- ductor, having said box in his left arm, door open in front, conductor placing his thumb on knob nearest to him and fore-linger on the next, thus turning carriage from left to right, bringing any given point desired.
I also place a pivot on the bottom of carriage, as seen at letter M, for the purpose of allowing the carrage to turn inside of fig. 1, as seen at lig. '3.
I make my tickets, and so airange them that each station has its own tickets, marked with the name of said station on the head of said tickets, as seen,` in iig. 4, at letter N, having four columns up and down said tickets, first column containing the month and rst or second week, as the case may demand, as seen `I place mysafety-fund box, containing my tickets for the different stations in said ticket-boxes, charging said conductor with all the tickets in said safety-fund box. I then allow said conductor to enter the cars, calling on each passenger for the point 11e or she desires to ride, at which time said conductor turns the carriage-wheel, brings up the number of said station, at which time he readily sees down the aperture the name of the-,station called, marked on the ticket-box,
as seen in iig. 3, in open door, at letters P; from which he pulls a ticket, on which he marks, in station column, the number of station of which passenger gets on opposite the day of the week. In case of half-fare, he lpunches a square hole in half-fare column, opposite the number ot" station, which he places in the hands of said passenger, and thus passing from one passenger to another until all have tickets I then have a conductor I call No. 2, whom I appoint as cash and ticket collector, immediately following conductor No. 1, who calls on each passenger for ticket, and on seeing ticket readily sees the number marked by conductor N o. 1, which enables him to call for the proper fare by seeing destination on the head of the ticket. L
Said cash and tickets must balance with the safetyfund box in the hands of conductor No. 1 when `returned to general ticket-agent.l
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isg 1. The combination and arrangement of the covering can, lig. 1, with the revolving many-chambered ticket-holder, figs. 2 and 3, operating substantially as .and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with the above, the employment of the system of tickets shown in tig. 4, substantially as described. l
