motion is imparted to the plunger D at the proper time by means of a fulerumed lever (1 which engages the upper end of the plunger-shank (Z. 'The rear-end of the lever d is connected with a pivot-rod (1 having a forked lower end that rides on the camshaft S and carries'an antifriction roller (Z which moves over a cam d on the cam-shaft The underside of the plunger D is made concave or fiat, according as round or flat bottles are to be labeled. The face of the plunger D is covered by a layer of felt, rubber or other suitable soft material so as to soften the impact of the plunger with the'bottle. The plunger D is pivoted to the lowerend of a spring-actuated rod d which is guided in the socket-shaped lower end of the shank of the plunger and which has a certain vertical )lay in the slotted lower end of the shank d by means of a cross-pin d which is retained in the slotted end by a collar d and set-screw al as shown in Figs. 16 and 17. The plunger D is cushioned by a spring (Z which is interposed between the shank and rod (Z and yields in upward direction and by its pivotconnection with the rod (1 in forward and backward direction so as to be capable of use for holding any shape or size of bottle to be labeled. ,1
The wipers--Below the plunger D and in the same vertical plane therewith are arranged two oscillating wipers F, which are shown in Fig. 1 and in detail in Figs. 5 and 6; The wipers F are inserted into the recessed ends of wiper-leversf which are fulcrumed to the .upper ends of upright arms f that are pivoted at their lower ends to lugs f 2 of a U- shaped transverse bar f which is supported on the front-end of a lever f that is applied S". The leverj has an antifriction-roller f X which is engaged-by acam fon the cam-shaft S. The wiper-levers f are connected at their outer ends with elbow-levers f which are fulcrunnd to upright lugs j of a stationary transverse bar f 9 the lower arms of the elbowlevers being connected by helical springs f with a transverse rod of the supporting-' frame.- The tension of the springs f presses the elbow-levers against short cam-levers f which are fulcrumed to the upper ends of the stationary lugs f and which are connected by curved pivot-links f with a lever f fulcrumed vatf andoperated by a camf on the cam-shaft S, said-cam being in. contact with an antifriction-rollerf at the side of the fulcrumed levcrf. The actuation of the fulcrumed lever f by the cam produces, the lifting 'of the cam-leversf 11. and imparts a lat eral motion to the wiper-levers and wipers, so that the latter are removed sidewisc of the bottle and permits them to be returned into raised position without forming. contact with the bottle and interfering 'ltlriliv label just placed thereon. The wipers are le of elastic material, such as soft rubber, so that they can readily pass over the ends of the label and over the sides of the bottle by the down-wardly-oscillating motion imparted to them by their actuating IHOC-llztlliSll'l. The label is-applied to the bottle by the pressure of the wipers in the usual manner, after which they are spread apart by the pivoted cam-leversj for clearing the bottles as described. Below the wipers is arranged a stationary bottle-rest G, which is supported at the upper end of an adjustable support g, the lower end of which is attached to the stationary arm of the transverse bar f" described. The bottle-rest G is provided at its rear-end with a stop g which is adj ustcd for the length of the bottle by a setscrcw 9* and against which the bottle is pressed by the at tendant, as shownin Fig. 4. The bottle-rest G is made in different shapes, according as it is to be used for labeling round, quart or int bottles or flat whisky-flasks, or other bottles, a special bottle-rest being preferably used for each size and shape of bottle. The bottle-rest is located vertically below the plunger and serves to support the bottles for the action of the wipers after the label has been transferred to the bottle by the pickers.
0pcmti0n.At the lower front-part of the machine is arranged thc'foot-treadle T, which operates by a connecting-rod t a. clutchmechanism T by which the camshaft S is thrown into gear with the driving-shaft S, and thereby the machine started. During the return-motion of the picker-carriage the faces of the pickers are supplied with paste by the oscillating transfer-roller, which takes up the paste from the paste-roller in the paste-box and transfers it to the faces of the pickers. hen the picker-faces have received the paste, they are raised by the action of the raising mechanisn'i towards the label feeding device so as to take up the lowermost label in the same, the lower ends of the label-holding fingers passing through the slots in the picker-arms. After the label is picked up by the pickers, the latter are lowered again. The pickers are then moved forward so that the' label is placed over the bottle. The plunger 1) then descends and presses the label onto the upper part of the bottle, which is held against the gage-plate by one hand of tllehttelnlant. The wipers are then actuatedso as to press the pasted ends of the label on the bottle and apply them thereto by the .hugging action of the wipers, which imitate-the action of the fingcrs of the hand in applyinglabcls to a bottle. \Vhile the wipers are passed over the bottle, the pickers are lowered and moved in backward,direction. Ina bottle-labeling machine, the-combination, with a bottle-rest and a horizontally reciprocating carriage carrying pickers, of a paste-box above the carriage havingapasteroller therein, a transfer-roller guided horizontally above said carriage, and arran ed .to transfer the paste from said paste-r0 ler bars fitting over saic rods at the ends of the former, one of said bars being adjustable toward and away from the other, and (:06 )erating label-holding shells carried by saic bars.

transfer roller rotating 'in contact with the paste-roller for receiving the paste, means for oscillating said paste-roller for transferring paste. to the faces of the raised pickers, means'for feeding one label after the other to the pickers while they are in raised position, and oscillating and spring-actuated wipers located sidewise of the bottle-rest.
8. In a bottle-labeling machine, the combination of a supporting-frame having horizontal ways, a horizontally reciprocating pickercarriage guided in said ways, vert1- cally reciprocating pickers guided in said picker-carriage, a stationary paste-box, a paste-roller in said box, means for imparting rotary'motion to said paste-roller, a pastetransfer roller guided in ways of the supporting-frame, means for rotating said transferroller when in contact withthe paste-roller, means for imparting oscillating motion to paste to the faces of the pickers, and means saidatransfer roller for transmitting the for delivering one label after the other to the pickers at each u ward motion of the same.
9. In a-bottleabeling machine, the combination of a horizontally reciprocating picker-carriage guided in ways of the supporting-frame, a picker-frame supported onsaidv carriage, said picker-frame being provided With upright standards, upright stops on the carriage for the picker-frame, pickercan'ying arms attached to the upper ends of the; picker-frame, means for verly-reciprocating motion to; the'fipickerme, a paste-box, means for-it 'nsferring I. paste from said box to the faces ii P ers when the picker-carriage arrives at the end of its reciprocating motion, a label-feeding device located above the pickers and rovided With label-retaining fingers, the pic erarms being provided with slots for permitting thepassing of the fingers through said slots when the pickers are raised for taking up the lowermost label from the label-feeding supporting said fingers, a spring-actu ated followerpressing on the pile of labels in the shells,
and means for permitting the gradual down- Ward motion of the follower.
11. In a bottle-labeling machine, a labelfeeding device consisting of two semicircular shells, a stationary front-shell and an adiustable rear-shell, rojecting' lugs at the ower ends of the she s, inwardly-projecting fingers supported between said shells, a spring-actuated plun er, means for feeding t e p unger into the s ells, means for lifting the plunger out of the shells and supporting it in raised position, and means for raising the shells from their normal position so as to insert a'pile of labels in the same.
12. In a bottle-labeling machine, the combination with the wi ers, Wiper-levers and means for oscillatin t e same, of fulcrumed and spring-actuate elbow-levers connected with said wi er-levers, and oscillating cams engaging said elbow-levers and'moving said Wipers in lateral direction for cleaning the bottle on the return-motion of the Wipers.
