FENCE-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
Application led November 23, 1907. Serial No. 403,555.
, has for its obj eotto provide a strong durable fence'I of this character in which the line wires are positively locked in 'engagementwlthfftlhe stay wires thereby to prevent accldentrafl'displacenient of the same.
Affurther object of the invention' is to provide a fence in which the line Wires are bent or wrapped around the stay wires in such a manner that when the line wires are placed under tension the loops or wraps of the latter willv bito into the stay wires and thusise-A curely clamp the parts together.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture. j l
Further objects and advantages will-appear in. lthe following description, it being 'understoodlliliat various changes in form, proportio'hsand Jn'inor details of construction may be resorted to Within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying -drawings forining'a part of this specification: Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of the fence constructed inaccordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of one of the wire joints or ties. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the loops or Wraps pressed together. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of Fig. 4.
Similar numerals .of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings. I
The improved fence forming the subject matter of the present invention consists of a plurality of longitudinal line Wires 5 fastened by staples or similar devices 6 to the fence posts 7 and spaced apart by vertical stay Wires 8.
The intermediate portions of the line Wires' .5 are bent or coiled around the adjacent stay wre'to fornisuperposed loops or Wraps 9 and l() which bear against the front portion of th(` stay wire and intersect at the rear of the latter; as shown. '.lhat portion ol' the longitudinal wires on the opposite sides of each stay wire is extended laterally in Contact with the rear walls of the loops t) and l0, as indicated at ll and 12 so that when the lin(` wires are stretched. or otherwise placed under tension the loops 9 and l() will bite into the stay wir(` and thus securely clamp the parts together.
Attention is here called to thel'aet that the.
longitudinal wires extend across and bear againstthe adjacent. loops or wraps of each tie or joint at the rear of the stay wire to form a partial closure for the eye ol' the loop, whih` `the loops or wraps 9 and l() have two points of Contact with the adjacent stay'vwire'at the' front of the tie.
The tie or joint shown in Figs. 2 and'3 of the drawings is in the forni of the figure 8 but il' desired the loops t) and 10 may he pressed or otherwise forced together with a suitable tool so as -to produce the'tc shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings.
vWhile the improved tie or joint is principally designed for use in constructing wire fences it is obvious that the saine may be used with equally good results inv the construction of wire mats, poultry inclosures', fenders or wherever a tic of this character is found desirable.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is.:
1'. A wire fence structure including interseating line and. stay wires, one of said wires being bent to form a plurality of intersecting loops engaging the other wire, the connecting wire 'o'.' the loops being disposed in contact with the last mentioned .wire and the ends of the first mentioned wire extended across and disposed in contact with the outer walls of the loops. j
2. A Wire fence structure including inter sectinj; line and stay Wires, said line wire being bent around the stay Wire to form superposed Wraps or yloops intersecting the stay wire on'one side thereof, the opposite ends of the line wire being disposed in contact with and extended across the adjacent loops to form partial closures for the eyes of said oops. i
3. 4A Wire fence structure including intersectingline and stay Wires, an intermediate In IVtd'esbirmony that I claim the foregoing :is portion of the vline Wrebeing bent around my own, I have hereto afxedgujr 4signature l0 the stay Wire to form snperposed wraps or in the presence of' two Witness'ef loops intersecting atthe rear of said sta-y 5 lWire, the en .of the longitudinal wireforminv` VTILLIMI M' BIRCH" one of the ops being extended` across an VVitnesees: having two points of Contact with the wire CLIFFORD l), Veins,`
forming the' mating loop. ROBERT HJCESSEL
