GAN PoR MILK, aw. APPLICATION FILEDJUNE 19| 1908.
WITNESSES FRANCIS P. LANGFIIT, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVNIA.
CAN FOR MILK, &c.
Specification of Letters P atent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
Application led June 19, 1906. Serial No. 322,370.
To all whom it Ymay concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS P. LANGFITT, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cans for Milk, &c. and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to cans for milk, etc.,
and the object thereof is-to provide a-can which will be sim le and cheap in its construction and which will protect the contents from impurities.
My in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination'of'parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and described and particularly ointed out in the claim.
To ena le others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved can, I will now describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my improved can. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same with the cap and lid removed. Fig. 3 is another view of the same, showing the act of pouring from my improved can and also a modification of the can.
Like symbols of reference indicate like parts in each.
As illustrated in the drawing, A represents my improved can, which is formed of sheet metal and consists of the body a having the sides 1 of the usual cylindrical shape, the bottom 2 attached in any suitable manner to the lower end of the body, and the shoulder 3 formed at the upper end thereof. Extending u wardly from the inner edge of the shouldhr 3 is a dome-shaped portion 5, from which the neck 4 extends upwardly, while a band 6 is soldered or brazed or otherwise rigidly secured to the portion 5 and extends around said neck, forming a space 7 between the same and the neck. The mouth 8 of theneck 4 extends above the top of the band 6 and is rovided with a lid or cover 9 having a handle 10. A cap 11, composed of sides 12 and cover 13, is adapted to fit over and around the band 6, its lower edge extending to the curved portion 5. Handles 14 are secured to the upper ends shown.
invention consists, generally stated,-
of the sides 1 as As the upper edge of the band 6 is lower thanthe mouth 8 of the neck 4, itis evident that, if desired, the said edge may be bent inwardly and secured to the said neck, as
shown by the flange 15 in Fig. 3, which Hang-e will close the upper end of the chamber 7, and ifpreferred openings 16 may be formed in the space between the band proper and theneck.
In using the can the cap 11 is removed as well as the cover 9, and the contents of the can may be poured from the same by resting the up er edge of theband 6 against the receptac e 17 for receiving the contents, as shown in Fig. 3, and this will permit the pouring to be done directly from the mouth 8. The upper edge of the band 6 will act to hold .said can in the pouring operation and permit over the edge of and the mouth to extend into the receptacle. It will thus be seen that when the cap 11 is placed in position around the band 6 and neck 4 and over the lid 9, such cap will be away from and out of contact with the neck and lid, andl anything which may be spilledover or brought into contact with the outside of the can will be kept away from the lid and upper end of the nec and so will not be mixed with and contaminate the contents either while being carried in the same or while` being poured therefrom. In the use of my im roved can, no dirt, flies, or germs will ybe ab e to gain access to or rest upon or be collected around the lid or pouring mouth of the can.
I claim:-
. A sheet metal milk can, comprising a main body portion, a neck of less diameter than flange for communicating with the the body portion and extending upwardly from the same,- said neck being integral with or soldered or brazed or otherwise connected to the body portion so as to form a liquid tight joint, a band soldered or brazed to the body portion the periphery of the band being spaced from the neck and below the upper edge thereof, and a cap fitting around said band for covering said neck, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I the said FRANCIS P. LANGFITT have hereunto set my hand. FRANCIS P. LANGFITT. Witnesses:
J. N. COOKE, WM. R. MCCoMMoN.
