To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMffs W. FULLER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Oatasauqua, in the county of Lehigh, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pushers for Cement-Grinding Mills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to pushers for cement grinding mills of the type set forth in the U. S. Letters Patent No. 582,520, of May 11th, 1897, to set the grinding balls in rotation within the grinding ring; and in such connection my present invention relates particularly to improvements'in the constructive arrangement of such pushers for a cement grinding mill.
The principal object of my invention is to provide particular'shaped pushers, in a cement grinding mill, in which bearing'faces are provided for the grinding balls and slightly curved faces to facilitate entrance of material to be ground between the said pushers and balls to the said grinding ring.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accom anying drawings forming part hereof, in W 'ch p Figure 1 is a view, illustrating partly in central vertical section and part1 in elevation, a pulverizing or cement grin ing mill, a carrier for the grinding balls, a grinding ring, a yoke supported by the carrier having arms, and pushers having sockets engaged by the yoke-arms. and partially extending therethrough, embodying features of my present invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, through the central portion of the mill illustrated in Fi 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail view, enlarged, il ustrating perspectively'one of the pushers.
Referring to the drawin s 4, represents the casingof the mill, u on w ich in the present instance, is arrange a frame or basket 5, ro-
vided with screens 6, carrying a rin 7, w ich serves as support for a plate 8, c osing the frame 5, at the upper end. Upon the plate 8, is arranged a bearin 9, for the driving shaft 10, passing centrally through the bottom ortlon 11, of the casing 4, and provided beow the same with a pulley 12, drivenby means, not shown. Within the casin 4, traversed by the shaft 10, is arrange an annulus or grinding ring 14, and to the shaft 10, by means of an extension 16, is suitably secured a platform or carrier 15, provided with projections or seats 18, supporting grinding balls 19 and holding the same in proper position with respect to the grinding ring 14.
As shown in Fig. 2, the extension 16, of the carrier 15, is preferably square in cross-section, and to the same is removably secured a yoke 20, provided with radially extending arms 21, for the reception and support of pushers 22, between which the grinding balls 19, are arranged, and are-revolved and held by the same in position on the projections 18, of the carrier 15. Each of the pushers 22 consists of a substantial segmental body, which'is provided with a socket or opening 23, terminating a certain distance from the outer curved face 24, of the pusher 22, which thus remains solid. The socket 23, serves to receive one of the yoke-arms 21, which holds the pusher a certain distance above the carrier 15, and is secured thereto by means of a pin 25, passing through openings 26, arranged in the pusher 22, and through the arm 21. Material entering the socket 23, due to the closing of the same, will not pass through the socket, and thus wear out the same as well as yoke-arms 21, but on the contrary will tightly pack therein and hold the pusher in a rigid position thereon. .to excessive strain solely borne by the same and requiring replacing of the pin and a pusher notwithstanding the face 28 thereof, for actuating the grinding ball 19, contacting therewith, may still be in good working condition. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the active face 28, of the pushers 22 preferably formed by a depression, concave in cross-section extend to a rearwardly tapering portion 29, which terminates in a straight contracted portion 30. This contacting or bearing face 28, of the pusher which to prolong the life thereof, may be chilled or case hardened, serves to rotate the balls on the carrier-seat 18, and tapering portion 29, as well as the contracting portion 30, to limit the movement of the balls 19, towards the shaft 10, when the mill is brought to a standstill. This object is also attained by the portion 31, of the surface of the pusher opposite the face 28, While the outwardly and then inwardly flaring ortion 32, rec'eding from the ball adjacent t ereto, forms in conjunction with the ball an opening 33, through which material to be ground readily passes to the grinding balls 19, and grinding ring 14, To aid in the ready entrance of material to the grinding ring 14, each of the pushers 22, at the upper side 37, and underside 38, is provided With inclined portions 34 and 35, extending from the outer face 24, thereof, Which directly conducts the material dropped on the pushers 22, or thrown against the underside thereof, into the grinding ring 14 Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a pulverizing or grinding mill, a grind ing ring, balls, pushers and means for supporting the pushers, each of said pushers having a curved solid face and an inner contracted face having a socket extending from the inner face into the body of the pusher to receive the supporting means, and said pusher having a side outwardly flaring and a side straight in cross-section and slightly concave convex, opposite the outwardly flaring side, substantially as and for the purposes described.
