AUTOMATIC DUMP ATTAGHMENT'FOR BINDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 16, 1907. Serial No. 393,130.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND H. JEF- FERIES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kiowa, in the county of Barber and State of Kansas, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Dump Attachments for Binders, 'of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to farm machinery, and more particularly to binders, and has for its object to provide a binder attachment arranged to receive the sheavesdelivered therefrom and to automatically dump the sheaves in such a waythat they will be de osited in straight rows, thus facilitating the lbading of the sheaves u on wagons.
Another 0 ject is to' provide an attachment of this sort which will be extremely simple, and which may thus be produced at a low figure.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a view showing a binder provided with the present attachment, Fig. 2 is a top plan, Fig. 3 is an end view with the ground wheel removed, Fig. 4 is a view showing the parts in dumping-position, Fig. 5 is a' detail section.
Referring now to the drawings there is shown a binder 6 including what may be termed the under board 7, which carries a dependin bracket 8. A laterally extending horizonta shaft 9 has its inner end journaled in the bracket 8, and at its outer end this shaft is provided with a su porting ground wheel 10. A bar 11 extends longitudinally of the shaft 9 at its outer portion and in parallel relation thereto, this bar having yokes 12 at its ends in which the shaft is revolubly engaged. The bar 11 lies at the forward side of the shaft, and has attached thereto a forwardly and inwardly extending draft rod 13, which is secured at its forward end to the binder and which is thus arranged to take up side draft, as will be readily understood,
A (plurality of depending rearwardly curve fingers 14 are engage through the shaft 9 between the yokes 12, these fingers being arranged for engagement of already dumped sheaves of wheat during the passage of the binder around the field, as wil be a parent from the following description. t will thus be seen that when these fingers engage such sheaves, they will be raised to rock the shaft 9 in the bracket 8; Connected with the binderat the inner portion of the shaft 9, there are a plurality of fingers A,
.which are arranged to'form a sheaf receiver 15, this receiver being disposed in positlon to I receive the sheaves from the under board 7.
The receiver is constructed and arranged to be dumped to allow the sheaves to pass therefrom to the ground, and operative connections between the shaft 9 and the receiver are provided, these connections being shown at B, to dump the receiver when the shaft is rocked as just described.
It will thus be understood that the sheaves are received and held by the receiver 15 until the fingers 14 come into engagement with previously de osited sheaves, when the attachment wi be operated to dump the sheaves from the recelver. In this Way, the sheaves are deposited in straight windrows.
It will of course be understood that during the initial trip around the field, the dump is operated by and.
The operative connections B include an arm C carried by and extending laterally of the shaft. 9, this arm extending forwardly, and having connected therewith a rearwardly extending rod D which is pivoted to the upper end of a vertical member E carried by the sheaf receiver 15. From the drawings it will be seen that when the shaft 9 is revolved as described, the sheaf receiver will be dumped.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a binder of a shaft revolubly connected therewith, a su porting ground wheel carried by the sha't,
epending fingers carried by the shaft, a sheaf receiver, arranged to be dum ed, and o erative connections between the s aft and t e receiver for operation to dump the latter when the shaft 1s moved in one direction,
Patented July 14, 1908.
said depending fingers of the shaft being ground wheel for the shaft, an arm carried of the fingers to move the shaft in a direction by the shaft, said arm extending laterally of to dump the receiver. 0 the shaft, connections between the arm and In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, the receiver for movement of the latter when in presence of two witnesses.
V 5 the shaft is moved in one direction, to dump RAYMOND H. JEFFERIES.
the receiver, and depending fingers carried Witnesses: by the shaft and arranged for engagement by CARL J EFFERIES previously dumped sheaves for movement PEARL GEORGE.
