Description

- No. 893,035. I PATENTED JULY14, 1908. r W. TURNER.
FOLDING RULE.
canon 'l/wt/vrom William Yizmer ATTORNEY.
WILLIAM TURNER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING RULE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
Application filed November 9, 1907. Serial No. 401,382.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TURNER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Rules, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to folding rules with a plurality of sections that are pivotally connected together, the object being to provide one of the end sections with a sliding section whereby the rule can be extended so as to make it longer when desired.
Another object of myinvention is to so connect this sliding section, that it will be out of the way when not in use and so that it is not liable to be broken 0H.
Another object of my invention is to provide a sliding section with designating figures from 1 to 6 on one side and with a continuation of designating figures on the opposite side, so that when used on a two foot rule it will have the desi nating figures 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30, p aced thereon and upon the opposite side designating figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. on a two foot rule and each section of the rule is 6 inches.
These objects are obtained by the novel arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter fully described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of the rule, showing one of the end sections swung outwardly and the sliding section extended. Fig. 2, is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3, is an inverted plan view of the same. Fig. 4, is a plan view of the rule showing the same partly open, and Fig. 5, is a section taken on line 55, of Fig. 3. I
In the drawin s A, indicates a plurality of sections pivotaIy connected together by pivot bolts B, which is the ordinary form of connecting a sectional rule together, the faces overla ping each other so that when folded it wi form a compact rule. One end section is longitudinally slotted as shown at This of course, is when used 0, one face of which is rabbeted along this slot to form-a guide-way C, in which is adapted to travel the head D, of the pin D, which extends through the slot and is connected to the section E, which slides through guide loop F, secured on the end of the end section. This sliding section is graduated into inches and fractions thereof, and has designating figures 1 to 6 arranged upon one side and the designating figures 25 to 30 upon the opposite side, so that when using to measure a distance which is over the length of the rule this slide can be extended by adjusting it to the required distance, whereby the length can be readily attained without shifting the rule at all. It will be seen that by constructing a rule as shown, more accurate measurements can be attained, as in shifting a rule the palce marked is sometimes lost and the exact measurement is not obtained. It will also be seen that when this section is not used it will slide along side of the. end section and lie flat against the same so that it will not be in the way in the least.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A rule comprising a plurality of-sections, having overlapping ends pivotally connected to ether, one end section having a longitudinaI slot formed therein, extending from the pivot point, to adjacent its outer end, the face of said section being rabbeted along the slot forming a guide-way, a guide loop se-- cured on the free end of said section on the opposite side from the guide-way, an addit1onal section slidablyvmounted in said guide 100 and a pin secured to the inner end of sai additional section extending through said slot, provided with a head fitting in said guide-way.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' WILLIAM TURNER.
