JAMES A. B'. PATTERSON, OF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 89,238, dated April 20, 1869.
mrrzovnmnm' m HARROWS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and malfing part of the same.
To all whom it many concern Be it known that I, JAMES A. B. PATTERSON, of Springfield, in the county of Sangamon, and in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Harrow; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved harrow, and
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Like letters represent like parts in each figure.
This device is an improved barrow, made in four triangnlal'marts, and when put together of lozenge form, self-adjustable to a degree which enables it to impinge upon the earth on both sides of a hollow, or
- of a ridge, at the same time, and movable, so that the farmer may lift any one or more of the four parts, so as to avoid an obstacle, or clear it of obstructions, and capable of being easily and quickly separated into two distinct, complete, and effective harrows.
This harrow is more fully described as follows, viz: It consists of four similar triangular frames, A, B, O, and D, of suitable size, with teeth inserted in the same, and a handle, L, upon each frame, so placed that when the frames A and B, or O and D, are connected together, or when all four of said frames are united, the said handlesL L, 850., will stand 'in pairs, convenient for use.
The frames A and B have fastened to their side-' fronts, strips or hinge-plates E E, of thin metal, which are bent at right angles across their fronts, overlapping each other, and pierced with a hole through each.
The frames 0 and D have a similar arrangement of strips, or hinge-plates, F F, at their rear ends, or the rear end, of the barrow, when in use.
The frames A and B have also guard-plates G G, of thin metal, fastened to their rear sides, and bending around theside angles of the barrow A B O D, play into notches in the sides of frames 0 and D, so as to prevent said harrow from twisting.
Each of said frames, A, B, O, and D, has also strips, or hinge-plates H H H H, of thin metal, fastened to the sides of its base, projecting into the centre of said barrow from the sides, overlapping each other, and each pierced with a hole.
These holes are so arranged as to be coincident, when the bases of the trianglesA O and B D, are parallel, and at proper distances.
A rod, K, passes through the centreof said barrow, between the frames A G and B D, lengthwise, from the rear end, where it is secured by a nut upon a screwthread, through the holes in hinge-plates F F, H H H H, and E E, to the front, where it is turned upward, forward, and then backward in a hook, to which the team is attached for draught.
In operating this barrow, the farmer attaches his team to the hook at the front end of'the rod K.
-If he wishes to avoid any obstacle, he lifts by the handle L, one or more of the frames A, B, O, and D. If he wishes to cleanse any part from obstructions, he raises said part by its handle, and turns it over, bring- ,ing the teeth uppermost.
'He may also, by removing-rod K, and substituting shorter rods, similarly constructed, use the frames A and B together, or the frames G and D together, as separate and independent barrows.
In this latter case, the handles to G and D should beremoved and placed upon the bases of said frames,
to the bases of frames A-and B. 7
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
row, consisting of the four similar triangular frames, A, B, O, and D, connected and hinged together by the metal strips E E, F F, H H H H, and G G, and the rod K, and provided with .four handles, LL, 860., all oonstrnoted,'arranged, and combined substantially as and for the purposes above set'forth,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have here unto set my hand, this 11th day of March, 1869.
J. A. B. PATTERSON. Witnesses:
