To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL O. KIDD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Heartwell, in the county of Kearney, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in end-gates, and it aims to provide an extremely simple, durable, and efficient device of that nature, which may be readily attached to and detached from the sides of a wagon-body, and without necessitating the use of a transverse rod and a nut or nuts for locking it in place thereon when attached.
To this end, the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, specifically claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated by corresponding reference numerals in the several views.
Of the said drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rear end of a wagon-body provided with an end-gate constructed in accordanee with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the end-gate, the casing of one of the locking-bolts being partly broken away. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view, partly in section, of one of the straps with which the locking-bolts engage.
Referring more particularly to the accomthe numeral 5 designates, generally, the wagon-body, each of whose sides 6 carries at its rear end a metal strap 7 in the shape of a closed loop, the side members of the strap lying in contact with the side faces of the wagon sides, as shown in Fig. 1. To facilitate the attachment of the straps to the wagon sides, the bottom of the wagon-body is cut-away at its rear corners.
Disposed between the sides of the wagon is the end-gate 8, which is reinforced at opposite sides by plates 9 and 1.0, each of the former being provided with a horizontallydisposed bolt-casing 11, in which a springactuated bolt 12 is fitted, the arrangement of the springs being such that the bolts are normally pressed toward the adjacent straps. The strengthening plates 9 are further provided with upper and lower laterally-projecting hooks 13, which are engaged in eyes 16 formed on the looped straps, when the endgate is in place. When in such position, the outer ends of the s )ring-pressed bolt are re eeived in horizonta openings 14, which are formed through the sides of the straps and through the wagon sides, each bolt being of such length as to project slightly beyond the outer face of the outer member of the corresponding strap. The bolts are retracted from the position above described by means of handles 15, which are formed on their innor ends.
In attaching or removing the end-gate, it is only necessary to retract the locking-bolts within their casings when the end-gate may be lifted bodily into or out of place.
While it is preferable to provide a pair of hooks 13 upon each of the reinforcing plates 9, one hookalone may be provided upon each plate, the cooperation of the hook with the spring pressed bolt preventing any accidental displacement of the end-gate.
The casings, in which spring-pressed bolts 12 are disposed, are preferably formed integral with the plates 9.
IVhat is claimed, is-
The combination, with the sides of a wagon-body, of a vertically-disposed looped strap fitted upon each wagon side adjacent the rear end thereof, the side members of each strap having openings registering with an opening formed horizontally through each wagon side, to provide a continuous horizontal passage, an end-gate disposed between the wagon sides, reinforcing plates secured to each side of the end-gate upon opposite ends thereof, a horizontally-disposed boltcasing formed upon each, outer reinforcing plate, a spring-pressed bolt disposed within each casing and projecting through the opposite ends thereof, the outer end of each bolt being adapted to extend yieldably into the corresponding horizontal passage, a laterallyextending hook formed upon each outer reinforcing plate, and an eye formed upon the adjacent strap for engagement therewith.
