Description

J GREGG. WATER 0001:.
No. 89.143, Patented Apr. 20, 1869.
Mme-mm game JOSEPH GREGG, O'F MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
Letters Patent No. 89,143, dated April 20', 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Figure 1 represents a part sectional view of the in-' vention Figure 2 represents a sectional and inside view of the tube.
Figure 3 is a plan of theelastic diaphragm.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a'water-cock, constructed air-tight, with a view to prevent all leakage and waste, and which shall be self-closing.
The invention consists- First, in a tubular valve-stem, with suitable guides, and spiral spring.
Second, in the adjustment of an elastic diaphragm of rubber, through the centre of which the discharge, tube is passed, and held in position by a flange inside the chamber, upon its upper siu'face, and by a screwcap on its lower surface.
Third, in the use of a flanged guide-tube, into the lower part of the interior of which the discharge-tube is screwed, and which serves, when pressure upward is applied to its flange, to raise the valve from its seat,
and permit the exitof the water through the perforaions of the discharge-tube.
A represents the discharge-chamber of the cock, divided into two compartments by the partition which forms the valve-seat B.
.B represents the partition, forming the valve seat.
G is the valve.
D is the screw-cap, covering the upper part of the discharge-chamber, and hollowed to receive and serve as a guide for the valve-stem E, as it is raised or depre$sed, and also to confine the spiral spring F, which encircles the valve-stem.
' E is the valve-stem.
F, the spiral spring, which serves, in combination with the elastic diaphragm, to keep the valve in its proper place when not in use.
G is the discharge-tub e, through the perforations of which, H H, the water is permitted to flow, whenever upward pressure is applied to the flanged guidetube I.
I is the flanged guide-tube.
J represents the screw-cap, applied to the bottom of the cock-chamber, and which serves, in combination with the flange of the lower chamber, to confine in place the elastic diaphragm.
K is the elastic-diaphragm, of rubber, or its equivalent, through the centre of which the discharge-tube passes, serving thereby to close all connection between the lower chamber and space through which the guidetube passes, thereby preventingleakage, and also serving, by its elasticity, to draw down the discharge-tube, and closing the valve 0.
to the upper and under surface of the diaphragm K, and encircling the discharge-tube G, and giving firmness to the movements of the elastic diaphragm K.
The prime object of this invention is to supply to manufactories, tenement-houses, and other localities where aqueduct-water is in use, a faucet, which shall be self-closing, free from leakage, not liable to get. easily but of repair, and which is capable of preventing the undue waste of water and damage frequently arising where water-cocks have been left open by carelessness, or with the intention of preventing freezing during the night-time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patenttubes I and G, and the diaphragm K, as and for the purposes specified.
The above specification of my invention, signed by me, this 13th dayof August, 1868.
