Description

No. 890,531. PATENTED JUNE 9, 1908. P. B. SANDERS.
SPRING CLIP;
APPLICATION FILED 0614,1907.

SPRING-CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1908.
Application filed October 4, 1907. Serial No. 395,877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED B. SANDERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of N ewington Junction, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring- Clips, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to spring clips for vehicles and the like, and its object is to provide a spring clip which will securely hold the leaves of a spring in position and obviate all necessity of perforating the leaves.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described, which holds the spring in such a manner that all movement of the leaves longitudinally of one another is prevented.
The invention consists of novel features and arts and combinations of the same, as will lie more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a spring showing my device ap lied thereto; Fig. 2 is a transverse seotiona view, showing the spring held in position by the clip; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the clip; and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the spring, showing two of the clips used in connection therewith.
Before proceeding to a more detailed description of the invention, it should be understood that it is customary to secure the leaves of a spring in position by means of a bolt or rivet mounted in a registering opening in the leaves. The openings are usually bored before the leaves are tempered, and as a result the edges of the openings are apt to receive a higher degree of temper than the other parts of the leaves and thus become more brittle and liable to-break. Furthermore,
the opening itself is a weakening feature in the construction.
In my invention I employ notches cut in the sides of the spring leaves, these notches in the spring.
being diagonally opposite to one another so that the distance from one notch to the other is never less than the distance from one notch to the side of the spring directly opposite thereto.
In using my invention in connection with vehicle springs and the like, I employ either one clip at the center of the spring or two clips at equal distances therefrom. F urthermore, the spring may be notched at a plurality of points to permit of the adjustment of any desired number of clips.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a vehicle-spring of the usual construction and consisting of a plurality of leaves. The cli 2 itself comprises a body 4 having laterall -disposed arms 3 integral therewith and arranged substantially parallel. The extremities of the arms are constricted and threaded and adapted to receive a clamping cross-bar 5, having suitable openings for the purpose. Nuts 8 secure the clamping cross-bar in position.
The arms 3 have inwardly-extending and diagonally-opposed ribs 6, which engage the openings or notches 7 in the leaves of the spring and secure them rigidly in position. Although in the preferred form shown in Fig. 3, the ribs 6 are diagonally-opposed, for the purpose of rendering greater strength to the structure, they can be difierently located, as desired.
I do not limit myself particularly to the structure shown, as it may be altered within reasonable limits without departing from the spirit of my invention. v
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination, a leaf spring having notches in opposite sides thereof and at diagonally disposed points, and a clip having arms extending adjacent the opposite sides of the spring, said arms having inwardly extending ribs adapted to enter said notches 2. In combination, a leaf spring having notches in opposite sides thereof and at diagonally disposed peints, the minimum distance between said \notches being not less than the distance between one notch and name to this specification in the presence of 1131116 side directly opposite tlhereto, and a clip two subscribing witnesses.
aving arms eXten ing a jacent t e o 0- site sides of the spring, said arms having in- FRED BURTON SANDERS 5 wardly extending ribs adapted to enter the Witnesses:
notches in the spring. NED LAWRENCE,
In testimony whereof I have signed my HENRY J. OUDWORTH.
