To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. SToNEMnTz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Haven, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in printing presses, and its objects are: First, to greatly facilitate the spreading and proper distribution of the ink upon the forms. Second, to provide a means whereby the amount of ink to be used may be easily regulated.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which I Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of the end of a printing press that carries the inking mechanism. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the same.

1 represents a portion of the frame of a printing press and 2 represents the reciprocating bed that carries the form of type when printing.
My invention consists of the manner of actuating the fountain roller 3, the ink distributing rollers 3, 4, 4c, and the form inking rollers 5 5, which is as follows: The cam 20 is mounted upon the shaft 3", upon which the fountain roller 3 is mounted, in such a manner that the turning of the cam will not turn the fountain roller except as the pawl 21 engages the ratchet wheel 21'. The pawl 21 is pivotally secured to the guide 19 which, in turn, is firmly secured to the cam 20, so that when the cam 20 is made to oscillate, by the carried down to the dotted lines in Fig. 5, the lugs 17 will be carried forward so that the pawl 21 will engage it when carried backward and be held up so that it will not engage the ratchet wheel 21 until it has passed some distance upon its forward stroke, thus not carrying the shaft 3 and the roll 3 as far as when the lever is in position to allow the pawl to engage the ratchet wheel further back, as hereinbefore described. The pawl 21 is pivoted to the frame 1 and is designed to engage the ratchet wheel 21 and hold it against the backward movement of the pawl 21, and the pawl e. is also ivoted to the frame 1 and is designed to holc the lever 17 to the desired position.
The rollers 4 4 are made to revolve by friction upon the surface of the ink table 2 as it reciprocates upon the frame 1 and, for the purpose of distributing the ink evenly, the rollers 4 4 and 5 are made to reciprocate lengthwise as follows: The shaft 9 is journaled in boxes 9, attached to the frame 1. This shaft has three arms, 7, 8 and 15, firmly mounted upon it, and one arm, 7, loosely mounted upon it. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is: 7
1. In combination with a printing press and its ink rollers, an oscillating cam wheel, a shaft journaled to the press frame, an arm securely attached to said shaft and an arm loosely mounted on said shaft for actuating 75 the ink distributing rollers longitudinally, bearings upon these arms engaging the wheel, arms securely mounted upon the shaft with one end engaging flanges on the end of the ink rollers, and a pawl and ratchet connect- 30 ed with the cam wheel to actuate the ink roller below the ink table.
2. In combination with a printing press, its frame, reciprocating bed and ink rollers, an oscillating cam wheel, a shaft journaled upon the frame, an arm securely mounted upon the shaft and an arm loosely mounted upon the shaft, a bearing on each of said arms and engaging the cam wheel, the loose arm extending beyond the cam wheel and 90 arranged to cause one set of ink rollers to reciprocate longitudinally, arms securely mounted on the shaft and connected to cause other sets of ink rollers to reciprocate longitudinally, a shaft carrying the cam wheel, an 95 ink roller mounted on said shaft, a ratchet wheel mounted on said shaft adjacent to the cam wheel and revoluble therewith, a guide mounted with the cam wheel, a shaft mounted in the frame, arms mounted on said shaft, 0 an ink roller mounted on said arms, a roller on the arms tov engage the guide that is connected with the cam wheel to raise and lower said arms.
3. In combination with a printing press, m5 its frame, bed and ink rollers, an oscillating cam wheel, a shaft revoluble in said cam wheel, an ink roller on said shaft, a ratchet wheel mounted on the shaft, a guide mounted with the cam wheel, a pawl mounted on said 110 guide and engaging the ratchet wheel, a lever mounted on the shaft and havin a lug for regulating the action of the paw upon the ratchet wheel, and arms carrying an ink roller and having a roller en aging the guide 115 to raise and lower the ink roller.
4. In combination with a printing press, its frame, bed, and ink rollers, an oscillatin cam wheel, a shaft carrying said cam whee and revolub y mounted therein, an ink well 120 mounted on said shaft, a guide .and pawl mounted with the cam wheel, a ratchet wheel mounted on the shaft and engaged by the pawl, a lever mounted on the shaft and having a lug in position to regulate the ac- 125 tion of the pawl upon the ratchet, arms pivoted at one end to the frame, an ink roller revolubly mounted in the other ends of the arms in position to be actuated by'the 'uides on the cam wheel to cause the said roller to 130 bearing 6 in the groove f will cause the shaft 9 to oscillate and to carry the arms 7 and with it, and the bearing 5 on the arm or lever 7 engages the groove f in the surface of 5 the cam wheel 20, which groove is so formed, diagonally of the surface of the wheel, that the upper end of the lever 7 will be carried to the right when the arms 7 and 15 are carried to the left, and vice versa. The upper 10 ends of the levers or arms 7 and 7 are provided with antifriction bearings a a that are fitted to engage the groove in the periphery of the sheaves 6 6, which are secured to the ends of the shafts that carry the rollers 4 4 15 so that the oscillating motion of the shaft 9 is transmitted, by means of the arms 7 and 7, to the rollers 4 4 to cause said rollers to reciprocate, alternately, in opposite directions, thus tending to distribute the ink that is carried by the roller 3 to the ink table.
' As the bed 2 passes back under the type inking rollers 5 5 these rollers take up a portion of the ink that has been distributed upon the ink table and carry it to the roller 5 and this roller is made to reciprocate lengthwise by the segment 15 engaging the flange 14, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 6. The segment 15 is so formed that even thoughthe roller 5 is so placed in its bearings that the flange 14 does not engage the notch in the periphery of the segment, the movement of the segment, caused by the oscillating motion of the shaft 9 will, invariably, carry the segment to position so that the flange 14 will drop into the notch before the complete revolution of the press is made.
For the urpose of rendering the rollers 5 5 adjustable I form slots (Z 0? through the side pieces of the frame 1 and pass the bolt 40 c throu 'h them, securing them to place by means of the nuts 0 a above the frame and c 0 below the frame, in such a manner that if it is desired to move the rollers sidewise this can be done by simply loosening the nuts 0 and sliding the boXes or hearings to the position desired, and if it is desired to raise or lower the rollers, this may be done by properly manipulating the nuts 0 c, c 0 up or down as desired.
In Fig. 2 I have shown the ink table 2 cut away at each side of the rollers 3 3 and the roller 3 cut away to show its relative position with the roller 3, and by this means I have been able to disclose the position of the ink well 16 whence the ink is taken up by the roller 3 and spread over the surface of the roller 3, by which roller it is carried up and distributed over the surface of the ink table '2, as hereinbefore more fully described.
