To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. CHAMBER- LAIN, acitizen of the United States, residing .at Sunbury, in the county of Northumberland, State of Pennsylvania, have invented plates means for simultaneously operating a camera shutter and a flash-light mechanism.
The invention is intended for use in banks, housesand the like to obtain a photograph of a burglar'attempting to enter the bank or house and is adapted to be automatically operated by the raising of a window or the or by any other desired means.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view, partly in section, of the device in use, showing the relative arrangement of parts. Fig. 2 is a detail bottom plan View of the electrO-magnet and its associated parts.
Referring to the drawings, 5 denotes a base, preferably of wood, to which is secured,
in any suitable manner, a base-plate 6 carrying an electro-magnet 7 of the usual construction.
Formed on the base-plate 6are oppositely disposed lugs 8, provided with eyes 9 in which are engaged the reduced ends 10 of an armature 11. Secured at its lower end to the armature 11 is a contact-rod 12 which is passed through a slotted guide-lug 13 on the ase 5. A valve-rod 14 is pivoted at its lower end to the armature of non-conducting material, and is passed through a guide 14 carried by the base-plate 6', and the valve-rod 14 is connected to a valve-arm 15 which controls a valve 16 located in a pipe 17 which leads to an acetylene gas-generator 18 located at any desired point adjacent the base 5.
The generator 18 comprises a tank 19 provided with a cover 20 which is securely held on said tank 19 by means of a threaded rod 21 which is secured to the cover 20 and extends downwardly to the bottom of the tank 19 and-is provided with a thumb-nut 22. Disposed above the upper ends of the contact- rods 12 and 27 and the pipe 17 is aforeminous plate 28 which is designed to holda suitable quantity of flash powder and partially surrounding the said plate is a hood 29 which serves the dual purpose of a reflector and a shield to prevent the flame from the flash setting fire to adjacent woodwork, etc.
Secured to the armature 11 at one side of the bottom thereof and projecting laterally from the same is a trip'finger 30 which is located in the path of and adapted to be engaged under a lug 31 formed on a sliding camera-shutter 32. The shutter 32 is slidable vertically in a shutter casing 33 and is an elongated I opening 34 which registers with an opening 35 in the shutter casing 33 when the shutter 32 is at the limit of its downward movement in the said shutter casing, which forms a portion of a camera 36. i
A leaf spring 37 side of the armature end of the spring is screw 38 carried by an arm 39 on the base 5 below the armature 11, to permit of adjustment of the armature with relation to the electro-magnet.
Conductor Wires 40 lead to binding posts 41 on the base 5 and connected to the said bindin posts are other conductor wires \42 which lead to any suitable circuit closer located in any desired place.
Should the circuit become closed by the raising of a window, the opening of a door, or in any other manner, the armature will be attracted to the electro-ma net as will be readily understood. ' being understood that the spark ignites the gas issuing from the pipe 17 and hence igniting the flash powder on the forarninous plate 28.
The electrical circuit enters through one of the wires 40 and passes through the'electro-magnets and out through the other wire 40, it being understood that this energization of the magnets will serve to attract the armature and that when the armature is so attracted, it being in circuit with'the plates 6 upon which the coils are arranged, the arm 12 will be swung out of contact with the arm 27 and hence the circuit will be broken and a spark will result. The armature then drops to its original position and the circuit is again made through the armature, the arms 12 and 27, and the coils. It will further be understood that the circuit will be made and broken repeatedly and that hence a number of sparks will result, thereby insuring proper operation of the device.
The circuit through the device is through one of the wires 40, through the coils, thence through the contact arm 37, which is in circuit with one of the coils, afterwards through the movable contact arm 12, and through the armature l 1, the base plate 6, and out through the other wire 40, this circuit being ra idly made and broken so as to produce spar s of rapid-succession beneath the plate 28.
What I claim, is
1. In a device of the character described the combination with an electric magnet and its armature, a camera shutter, and a valve, of means for simultaneously operating the shutter and the valve. Y
2. In a device of the character described the combination with an electro magnet and.
its armature, a camera shutter, a valve, and a sparking device, of means for simultaneous y operating the shutter, valve and sparking device.
3. In adevice of the character described the combination with an electro magnet and its armature, of a gas supply pipe, a valve interposed in the pipe, a sparking device, a camera shutter, connections between the valve and the armature for opening the former, and means for operating the spark ing device and the shutter simultaneously with the opening of said valve.
4. In a device of the character described the combination with an electro magnet and its armature, of a camera shutter, asparking device and a valve, connection between said shutter and said armature for opening the former, and means for operating the spark- .ing device and the valve simultaneously with armature, of a gas supply valve, a rod con' necting said valve and said armature for opening the former when the latter is moved, a contact arm carried by one of the coils of the electro-magnet and in circuit therewith and extending to a point adjacent the outlet of the valve, a contact arm carried by the armature and lying normally in contact with the last named arm and arranged for movement out of contact therewith when the armatureis attracted to its magnet, and means connected with the armature for releasing the camera shutter.

a contact member in circuit with one of the coils of the magnet, a second contact member carried by the armature and lying normally in engagement with the first named contact member, and an arm carried by the armature and arranged to support the camera .shutter, said arm being released from such engagement with the shutter when the armature is moved.
