Description

P M H0 01 m N Tm [NI ENTOR cizlatoz/m APPLICATION TILED D110. 11, 1906.
WITNESSES Attorneys UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. OOLKITT, OF LINDSEY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO JOHN H. FINK,
OF PUNXSUTAWNEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
N UT-LOCK.
Patented June 2, 1908.
Application filed December 11, 1906. Serial No. 347,288.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEsH. OOLKITT, a citizen of the United States of America, re sidin at Lindsey, in the county of J eflerson and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. 4
This invention relates to nut locks and the invention has for its object the provision of novel means for retaining a nut upon the threaded end of a bolt.
My invention aims to provide a simple and inexpensive nut lock wherein-a locking ring and Washer are employed for firmly retaining a nut upon the threaded end of a bolt, and preventing vibrations of the bolt from loos-' ening the nut thereon.
The detail construction of my improved nut lock will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended c aims, and referring to the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a nut lock constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view thereof, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking ring, Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a locking washer.
Referring. to the drawings in detail 1 denotes a plurality of pieces of metal having openings 2 formed therein through which extends a bolt 4 provided with a head 5 and a threaded end 6.
Mounted upon the threaded end 6 ofthe bolt 4 is a split locking ring 8 having each of its faces flattened and further provided with oppositely disposed projections 9 and 10 in the form of teeth. The protuberances 9 project from one face of the ring while the protuberances 10 project from the other face of the ring. The protuberances 9 and 10 extend transversely of their respective faces.
Each of said protuberances is provided with a knife edge. The protuberances 9 are adapted to engage in the metal plate 1 adjacent to the opening 2 therein, while the projections 10 engage in the rear face of a locking washer 11 mounted u on the threaded end 6 of the bolt 4. The locking washer 11 is-of greater diameter than the ring and is provided with a plurality of slots 12 extending tangentially with respect to the edge-of the opening in the washer. The slots 12 form a circumferentially extending series of cars 14 and each of said cars is separated from another by a segment-shaped portion forming the inner wall of the slot. The reference character 15 denotes a nut which is threaded upon the end of the bolt 4 and is adapted to be engaged by one or more of the ears 14 when these latter are bent at right angles with respect to the body portion of the washer. The tangentially disposed slots 12 in the washer provide means whereby any one of the cars can be turned up to fit the nut on one corner or side no matter what position the nut may be in with respect to the outer face of the washer. The tangentially disposed slots further provide means whereby pairs of ears can be bent to engage the corners of the nut with the vertical edges of the nut extending between the pairs of ears. The positioning of the slots tangentially allows for any one ofthe ears to be bent against the nut which would not be the case if the slots were radially disposed as in some instances if the slots are radially disposed it would re uire a twisting'of an ear to lie flush with t e nut.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A nut lock comprising a split ring having each of its faces flattened and further provided with oppositely disposed protuberances projecting from each of the faces of the ring, said protuberances extending transversely and of a length equal to the width of their respective faces and each of which is provided with a knife edge, and a washer of greater diameter than and engaging the outwardly extended projections of the ring, said washer provided with a plurality of slots extending tangentially with respect to the inner edge of the washer, said slots forming a circumferentially extending series of ears, said ears separated from each other by a segment sha ed portion forming the inner wall of the s ot, in combination with a bolt and a nut mounted thereon, said bolt adapted to receive said ring and said Washer, these ners of the nut with the vertical edges of the latter interposed between the nut and the a nut extending between the pairs of ears. 10
object through which the bolt extends, the In testimony whereof I affix my signature forwardly extending protuberances of the in the'presenoe of two Witnesses.
ring adapted to engage the object and the JAMES H. COLKITT. ears formed by said slots adapted to engage Witnesses: the nut, said slots providing means whereby J. C] CLAwsoN,
pairs of ears can be bent to engage the cor- J. K. DIOKEY.
