METALLIC HOOP.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented. May 26, 1808.
- Application filed March 9, 1906. Serial N o. 305,126.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. BRAINARD, of Pittsburg, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have nvented a new and, useful Improvement in Metallic Hoops, of which'the followingis a full, clear, and exact description. I
My invention relates to metallic hoops for barrels, ke s and similar articles and more particular y to the chime or end hoops of the barrels.
the barrel and to provide means by which a wire hoo havlng a circular cross sectlon, 1s secure y held in place and its movement on the barrel is prevented.
IIltlfl6 drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view showing myinvention as it is applied.
to hold a wire hoop in place on a wooden barrel. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the hoop; 'Fig. 3 is a vertical section on a larger scale showin the hoop asused with a wire hoop of circu ar cross section and Fi 4 is a similar-detail view without the wire oop.
The invention consists in a metallic hoop 2 constructed of a thin metal strip having a substantially circular head 3 formed on the one edge and a semicircular projection or 1 bead 4.011 the opposite edge, the beads preferably extending the 'whole length of the hoo and entirely around the barrels.
I ve found thatjby using the usual wire hoop 5 and .by-employin the auxiliary metalhc hoop 2 havin beaded edges as shown in the drawings, t e'wire hoop is securely held in place and will not shift its position on the barrel during handling of the barrel.
The hoop having the'beaded ed es may be employed without wire hoops; 't e ends of the hoop may be joined by rivets or may be having a su welded or otherwise united and other changes may be made without departing from my invention. p
I claindg- 1 A fastening for barrels comprising a flat, thin metallic hoop having a substantially circular bead on one of its edges and a substantially semi-circular bead or projection on its opposite ed e, and a second hoop stantialy circular cross section, the semi-circular bead on the edge of the flat, thin hoo bein arrangedto contact with and ho d the substantially as described.
2. A fastening for barrels comprising a metallic hoop of substantially circular cross section and a supplemental'metal'hoop of flat, thin cross section having beaded edges, the semi-circular bead on one edge of the fiat, thin h'o'op bein arranged to engage with and retain the ioop of circular cross section in position on the barrel; substantially as described.
3. A fastening for barrels comprising a metallic hoop of substantially circular cross section and a supplemental metal hoop 01'' flat, thin cross section having a circular .bead upon one edge and a semi-circular bead on its opposite edge, the semi-circular bead on the supplemental hoop being arranged to engage with and retain the first hoo in position on the barrel; substantial y as described.
4. In a fastenin for barrels, the combination with a meta lic hoop of circular cross section, of a second hoop of flat thin cross section having a semi-circular head on one edge, said second hoop being arranged to engage with and secure the hoo of circular cross section in position on the arrel; substantiallyas described. 1
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set R. D. LITTLE, H. M. CoRwIN.
